Pottery Up-cycle - Κεραμική Aνανέωση

Sharing is caring!

A few days ago my husband was searching through his shed at the farm and came up with this lovely piece of ancient history.  Apparently it had belonged to his father.   It was full of sentimental value, but it looked like it had lived a tortured life.  But it was damaged on the bottom. And it had cracks on the top.  I guess this is part of the charm of old things.

It had lovely detail to it, with rings running through the top.

For me it was important to preserve the character of the piece but also give it a little life. So I painted the rings with white chalk paint.

I painted the rest of the piece with some left over paint that I had.  It is a nice sand sort of color. I then wiped off as much as I could to give it a distressed look.

I used some more chalk paint and dry brushed some small lines, making sure to blur them afterwards.  This give a bit of depth to the piece.

I  painted the handle and the top a white color and  then I rubbed the white rings using a wire pad. I did not want them to stand out too much.

Below you can see how it looks aged when the white paint has been  rubbed off.

The last step was rubbing some olive oil onto the pottery to give it a nice sheen.

As you can see it is far from perfect, but I like the fact that it is revealing its’ history.

It also has a lovely sheen.

I have tried to preserve the character of this Pottery while giving it some “oomph”.  What do you think, was it a good idea for me to up-cycle?

Thank you Mary. In fact it is grecian as we live in Greece. We are always finding old things, any many times when he is plowing the farm he finds things.

Mary, you brought the piece of pottery back to life. It is a beautiful piece of pottery with such history.

Debra I suspect if they were to start digging under the houses here they would find a treasure trove of archeology. As it is, in order to build here in Greece the Archeological dept comes to check the ground first.

Thank you Susanne. When I got my hands on it, it was full of dirt and looked awful.
