Shopping in Greece – Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge

Sharing is caring!

It’s time for our monthly Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge where I team up with three other friends to compare lifestyles from different countries.  This month we are holding it one week early because I’ll be taking off next week to celebrate my Easter which is on May 1st this year.  I’ve already made my Easter Candles so I’m ready.

Last month’s theme was Flowers for Spring.  This month we are going to  talk about shopping habits in our countries.

Here in Greece we have lots of little quaint shops. This is one of the main streets where the shops are located.

These are specialty stores, selling one category of products.

This store sells locally produced food products such as cheese, marmalades, noodles, and honey.

The owner of this store sits outside waiting for customers for her health food store.    The stores open from 9 am and close at 2 pm for the mandatory siesta.  This is necessary especially in the summertime when the heat is unforgiving. They reopen in the afternoon between 5 and 6 and close at 8 ot 9 pm. But not on  Monday and Wednesday.  As you can see this can be very confusing for a visitor.

This is the local liquor store!  Greece has many vineyards and produces many varieties of wine, along with liquors made from local fruits.

Here we have a typical greengrocer.  It is usually painted in bright colors and there is always a lady outside dressed in black gossiping with the store owner “wink”.  As I was walking by and snapping she said to him ” Oh, she is a foreigner!”

The Bakery sells coffee and ice cream along with lots of pastries and desserts.  We have way too many of these!

This is a “Pantopoleio”. It translates to “everything for sale”.  It is crammed with anything and everything.   We see the ubiquitous Coca-Cola sign and a freezer full of ice cream. But there is also an ironing board in the back and some planters. A little of everything. The chairs are for the owner and local friends who keep company over a coffee while sitting outside on a sunny day.

This is also a common sight, cans of gas for the stoves.   They are sold in canisters and delivered to houses.

You may find an occasional supermarket but only in the larger towns.  Lucky for me the supermarkets do not close during siesta hours.   And malls are practically unheard of!  They are only found in large cities.

The local coffee shop also sells donuts and milk desserts. All these cafes have outdoor  seating and are usually full throughout the day. I was lucky to get photos early in the morning.

This is the Kiosk.  It is just like the pantopoleio, the “all in one shop” but on a smaller scale. I don’t think this one has ironing boards but it has pretty much everything else.   And there is one on every other corner!  Years ago before cell phones, it was also the place people went to if they wanted to make a phone call.

And no self respecting town in Greece would survive without a tourist shop or two.   This gentleman has spread his wares out on the sidewalk and beyond.

And now that I  have shown you a typical town with all the picturesque shops you are probably wondering where I go to shop.  Well, I go to many of these along with the open air market which I wrote about here. However, my all time favorite place to shop is none other than Lidl.  For those of you who don’t know what Lidl is I would say it is the equivαlent of Target, but on a much smaller scale.  Lidl has all the food and vegetable you can want and every week they bring in a rotating supply of clothing, home accessories, equipment, anything you can imagine.  The nice part is that they have really good quality for the price (and I am not getting paid for this, I just really love the store).

As you can see I have quite a variety of shops to choose from.  Shopping in Greece is fun! My only complaint is that there are no Home Depot’s or Michael’s here.

Now off to visit the other three bloggers who will take you on a trip to their countries.  Let’s see if they have a Michael’s or a Home Depot!  Do you have any near your homes?

Hi Mary! I am envious of your shops. Where I live it is so impersonal with large shopping malls. I love the personal touch of each of these shops and really enjoyed visiting the shops with you. Thanks for sharing with us at Over the Moon. Have a lovely day!

Sue most of the time I love going into the shops but sometimes they can be a little overbearing. I enjoy browsing and I don't like it when sales people are breathing down my neck. It has happened on the rare occasion. The food shops more than make up for it though, they have quality food.

Oh Marry, I loved this post!! Looking at those pictures made me feel like taking a walk in my hometown's streets. Thinking about it Izmir is a spit away from Greece, so no wonder that everything looks so similar :) Thank you for sharing this, xx
