A Heart Shaped Box for Valentine’s Day Crafting

Sharing is caring!

It’s my favorite time of the month again, with the International Bloggers Club challenge.  We are a group of friends from all over the world who get together every month to share our projects and discuss how things are done in our countries.   Last time we shared gift wrapping ideas, and the month before wooden projects

And now with February right around the corner we are sharing our Valentine’s Day crafts with you.

At the start of this month I had shared 10 projects for a special Valentine’s Day. But I just love a good Valentine’s Day challenge and this was it for me.  One project in particular really got my creative juices flowing as you will see below.

What I Used:

  • Heart shaped box with Styrofoam insert
  • burlap ribbon
  • coral colored scrapbook paper 12″ by 12″ (30 by 30 cm)
  • faux flowers from the dollar store
  • a ribbon that originally contained Jordan Almonds

I started out with this heart shaped box with an espresso set inside.  I believe it was a wedding gift favor that my dad handed down to me. Thanks Dad!!!  Now I’m not much of an espresso drinker but I cannot pass up a nice box! It was just screaming “Use me for Valentine’s Day!!”  And that is exactly what I did!

Below you can see what it looks like when emptied out.  It has Styrofoam under the satin fabric and spaces for the coffee machine and for cups and saucers. I wanted to work with those cut out spaces so I just left it like that.

The How To:

The first thing I did was to make some roses out of burlap ribbon.  I think I’m actually getting better at this.  I had attempted it before with my basket bottom craft.   In this case the more you practice the better you get.  Here is a video on how to make them from someone who really knows how to do it.  The ribbon I got had white edges, so it makes them look extra special.

I placed them in the three large openings inside the satin covered Styrofoam.

I then took that ribbon that was included in the box and had the Jordan almonds nestled inside, and turned most of that into a rose as well.

That also went inside the heart shaped box.

The next step was inspired from Canary Street Crafts.  They had made beautiful spiral flowers using just paper. I found this beautiful shade of coral scrapbook paper at Michael’s which I thought would be perfect for this project. I outlined four circles and cut them out.

Then I cut them into spirals.  To get the shape, I twisted the paper around itself and just held it tightly woven for a few minutes.  Once I let it go it opened up like you see below.  The ladies who originally made it used glue, but I didn’t use anything.

I placed them in the box and they held their shape very well, so unless I decide to hang this up on the wall, there will be no need for glue.

The last items that I added was these faux flowers which I got at the Dollar Tree.  Instead of roses I purposely chose these small flowers, some of which were coral colored.

I cut them up into small branches using pliers.

And then just stuffed them all over the place.  Anywhere the white satin was showing through, I just added the flowers.

The flowers look like they are bursting out of the box!

Here you can see the little flower and faux diamond piece that originally held the Jordan Almonds.

I even stuck a few flowers in the center of the burlap roses.

Now what am I going to do with this?  Well for now I think it makes a lovely piece to place on a dresser or as a centerpiece.  But I can also hang it on the wall… of course I will have to glue everything in place.

Right now I have it leaning against a frame which has a soft pink color as background.  I think that it is more than enough to put me in the Valentine’s Day spirit.

I’ve gotta say thanks to my dad here for gifting me this wedding favor.  I may have no use for the espresso set but the box was a big hit with me!!  I hope you are inspired by this outside the heart shaped box thinking and come up with something like this for your Valentine’s Day crafting.

You made me laugh Mary, you did the same as my kids do when they get a gift, they are fascinated by the wrapping paper or the box and pay little attention to what's inside. Anyone can use an expresso but few can make a box look so beautiful. Love the burlap flowers (thanks for the link) and how you combined the rest, it so pretty and colorful. Has your dad seen it?

Haha!! I looked at that espresso machine and put it aside because that box was like wow for me! I will definitely have to show it to him and he'll probably complain that there is nothing wrong with the coffee machine!

They are so much fun to make once you get the hang of it.

It turned out so pretty; I love that you reused EVERYTHING! I had to chuckle though; it reminds me of kids who get a great toy, but then tire of it and end up playing with the box/packaging instead. The packaging always seems to win out :)

I always try to reuse everything otherwise there would be no room in the house for me! ;) And yes I am proud to be a big "kid"!!
