A Happy New Year to everyone. The holidays may be over but we are still celebrating. In Greece we celebrate the 12 days of Christmas up until January 6th which is the Holy Epiphany. The park in the center of our town has kept the Christmas spirit alive by being transforming into a Christmas village. This is the entrance to the park, with a mischievous elf at the top. The first thing we see upon entering is a nativity scene. In the center of the park is a lake with a bridge over it. The lake has been decked out with a float on which sits the snow queen. Here she is again, with the stars twinkling in the trees. The park is full of fun and exotic statues. And here is Santa's workshop. Lights are blazing everywhere! As many of you may know, here in Greece we have been severely hit by the economic crisis. However this past year, the Mayor of the town along with all his deputies, has gone above and beyond in creating a festive atmosphere for the town. This is something that I had not seen before and it made me very proud because many people need a little happiness during these difficult days. In this way, I wanted to share the spirit of my town. Margaretha, we need all the cheer we can get. I'm sure you are having the same problems in France, In these days of celebration it was a special treat for all of us and it's still going on!

Hi Mary, what a beautiful park in which to celebrate Christmas! And 'well done' to your Mayor and town council for making the efforts. So many obstacles can be overcome with a positive attitude.

Yes it was quite an amazing site! The kids walked over the bridge and took some photos! And they even had a small ice skating ring.

How beautiful and festive Mary! I especially like that the statues in the Nativity Scene wear white gowns with golden embellishments, just like the gods, right? And wow to your Mayor! Good Job, that's the kinda mayor you need!

It was a beautiful Nativity, it matches your markers ;) This year the mayor decided not to put up lots of lights on the streets but instead chose to decorate the park, which in my opinion was the best decision.

That was beautiful. It must have lifted everyone's spirits for the Christmas season and shows how caring the Mayor and staff are. We all need fun times even in difficult times.

Debra, that's exactly how I felt, a lifting of the spirit! There were little kids all over the place with their families and many activities were offered to them for free. Just what we need in a time of crisis.

I love that your town has kept the spirit of Christmas going after Boxing Day. It is afterall the holiday "season" and not just all the hype before the presents are open. Kudos to your town counsel!

I agree Celeste, we transform the whole house and in the States they even have trees for each room of the house. It really is a seasonal thing,

You are so right Laurie, it is a small miracle. Many people had taxes to pay at the end of the year and they were wiped out. It was the least the mayor could do to bring a little cheer into our hearts.

Robin, I just realized you're a New Yorker. Did you know that I lived in the city for allmost 30 years. I think where a person grows up is what defines them. So now you know. We have more in common then we knew!! You're just a wee bit more north than me.
