It’s my one year blogoversary!! It has been a long and hard road but I am happy to say that I have made it to one Year!!! And since many of you have been visiting me for a while now, I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. But I must warn you this is a long post.
Είχα έναν μακρύ και δύσκολο δρόμο, αλλά χαιρομαι να πω ότι έχω συμπληρώσει ένα χρόνο!!! Και εφόσον πολλοί από εσάς με επισκέπτεστε για καιρό τώρα, θα πάρω αυτή την ευκαιρία για να σας πω λίγα πράγματα για τον εαυτό μου.
I was born on that not so little island Lesvos, which is getting all the migrants from Turkey right now. My parents and I moved to New York when I was little because my mother had a rare disease. Unfortunately, the doctors weren’t able to help her very much; they just poked and prodded her. I grew up in the city. It was a happy time and full of adventures. Unfortunately, I lost my mother when I was 19.
Γεννήθηκα σε αυτό το όχι και τόσο μικρό νησί της Λέσβου που δέχεται τους μετανάστες από την Τουρκία αυτή τη στιγμή. Μετακόμισα με τους γονείς μου στη Νέα Υόρκη, όταν ήμουν μικρή επειδή η μητέρα μου είχε μια σπάνια αρρώστια. Δυστυχώς, οι γιατροί δεν ήταν σε θέση να την βοηθήσει πάρα πολύ. Ήταν χαρούμενα χρόνια για μένα, αλλά την έχασα όταν ήμουν 19.
A few years later I met my husband (who is Greek and also moved to the States at a young age) and we set about starting a family. We made a very conscious decision to raise the kids in one country because it is very hard to have to go back and forth. You love the country you are in now, but that other one with the blinding sun and the blue waters is calling you back. And so in a reversal, we moved back to Greece when my oldest was school age.
Λίγα χρόνια αργότερα γνώρισα τον άντρα μου (ο οποίος είναι Έλληνας και έχει μια παρόμοια ιστορία μετανάστευσης σε νεαρή ηλικία) και αποφασίσαμε να κανουμε οικογένεια. Κάναμε μια πολύ συνειδητή απόφαση να αναθρέψουμε τα παιδιά σε μια χώρα επειδή είναι πολύ δύσκολο να πηγαίνεις μπροστά και πίσω. Αγαπάς τη χώρα στην οποία βρίσκεσαι τώρα, αλλά η άλλη με τον εκτυφλωτικό ήλιο και τα καταγάλανα νερά σε καλεί πίσω. Και έτσι επιστρέψαμε στην Ελλάδα.
We were content, although I have to admit it was quite a cultural shock for me. There was such beauty all around. But then the economic crisis hit. And there was a mass exodus of young people due to the lack of jobs. We made a difficult decision to have our sons move back to the States. They would have jobs to start with, something that they couldn’t have here. It’s been years since their departure, when they left as kids and now they have become men and make me so proud. This is exactly what we set out to avoid by moving to Greece in the first place. The irony is not lost on me. At mealtime my table is half empty but I thank the Lord that they had somewhere to go.
Ήμασταν ικανοποιημένοι, αν και ομολογώ ότι στην αρχή πέρασα ένα μεγάλο σοκ. Στη συνέχεια, όμως η οικονομική κρίση χτύπησε. Και υπήρχε μια μαζική έξοδος των νέων λόγω της έλλειψης θέσεων εργασίας. Πήραμε την δύσκολη απόφαση και τα αγόρια μας επέστρεψαν στην Αμερική όπου θα είχαν εργασία, κάτι που δεν υπήρχε εδώ. Έχουν περάσει χρόνια από την αναχώρησή τους, όταν έφυγαν παιδιά και τώρα έχουν γίνει άντρες και με κάνουν τόσο περήφανη. Αυτό θέσαμε ως στόχο να αποφύγουμε με τη μετακόμιση μας την Ελλάδα. Η ειρωνεία ειναι ολοφάνερη. Κατά τη διάρκεια του γεύματος το τραπέζι μου είναι μισοάδειο αλλά ευχαριστω το Θεό που είχαν κάπου να πάνε.
And so we come to the present. One year ago, we had just elected a new Prime Minister who promised us the stars and the moon all wrapped up in a pretty bow. Now I know that we’re not idiots. I didn’t believe him, but I thought “things cannot get any worst.” He was going to provide us with some hope. And it was in this spirit that I started my blog. Things cannot get any worst. I’ll do this because I love it and we’ll see where it takes me. I named it “In the Boondocks” in reference to where I live. Μy first post, the picture frames with birds.
Και έτσι ερχόμαστε στο παρόν. Πριν από ένα χρόνο εκλέχθηκε νέος πρωθυπουργός ο οποίος μας υποσχέθηκε τα άστρα και το φεγγάρι όλα τυλιγμένα σε ένα όμορφο φιόγκο. Τώρα ξέρω ότι δεν είμαστε ηλίθιοι. Εγώ δεν τον πίστευα, αλλά σκέφτηκα ότι “τα πράγματα δεν μπορεί να πάνε χειρότερα”. Ότι επρόκειτο να μας δώσει κάποια ελπίδα. Και ήταν σε αυτό το πνεύμα που ξεκίνησα το μπλογκ μου. Τα πράγματα δεν μπορεί να πάνε χειρότερα. Θα κάνω αυτό, γιατί το αγαπώ και θα δούμε πού θα με βγάλει. Το ονόμασα ”Στην Ύπαιθρο”. Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη ανάρτηση μου, οι κορνίζες με τα πουλιά.
I was off to a slow start since I had absolutely no idea what blogging entailed. I couldn’t even see the tip of the iceberg at that point. As the months went by I discovered other bloggers and with their help – because there are so many generous people out there who share a wealth of information – I was able to figure out a few things and actually have more people visit me other than friends and family. As my fortunes increased our Prime Minister’s decisions had the opposite effect. I had discoved Hometalk and they were pivotal in helping me to find my way. I saw other’s contributions and thought I can do that too. Thanks to Miriam and Hometalk, I had my first success, the Storage Unit Upcycle.
Ξεκίνησα πολυ αργά γιατί δεν είχα απολύτως καμία ιδέα τι σημαίνει μπλογκινγκ. Δεν μπορούσα να δω ακόμη και την κορυφή του παγόβουνου. Καθώς οι μήνες περνούσαν ανακάλυψα άλλους μπλογκερς και με τη βοήθειά τους – επειδή υπάρχουν τόσα πολλά άτομα εκεί έξω που μοιράζονται έναν πλούτο πληροφοριών - κατάλαβα μερικά πράγματα, και άρχισαν να με επισκέπτονται περισσότεροι άνθρωποι, εκτός από τους φίλους και την οικογένεια. Όσο αυξανόταν η τύχη μου, τόσο οι αποφάσεις του Πρωθυπουργού είχαν το αντίθετο αποτέλεσμα. Είχα ανακαλύψει το Hometalk και ήταν καθοριστικό στην προσπάθεια μου να βρω το δρόμο μου. Είδα τις εισφορές των άλλων και σκέφτηκα ότι μπορώ να το κάνω αυτό. Χάρι σ’αυτούς είχα την πρώτη επιτυχία μου, την Κόκκινη Αποθηκευτική Μονάδα.
As summer rolled in, things started to get a bit crazy here with the politicians behaving like children, signing everything that was put in front of them. There was no cooperation and harmony. Hah, they even had us vote on a referendum and then turned around and did the exact opposite. I on the other hand, had discoved link parties and was able to find a community. One blogger who was there for me from the start was Larissa of Prodigal Pieces. She featured my rusty old table revived, and I met many other wonderful bloggers who frequent her site.
Καθώς μπηκε το καλοκαίρι, επικράτησε το απόλυτο χάος με τους πολιτικούς να συμπεριφέρονται σαν παιδιά, υπογράφοντας τα πάντα που είχε τεθεί μπροστά τους. Δεν υπήρξε συνεργασία και αρμονία. Χα, ψηφίσαμε σε δημοψήφισμα και στη συνέχεια γύρισαν και κάναν το ακριβώς αντίθετο. Εγώ από την άλλη πλευρά είχα ανακαλύψει τα λινκ παρτιες και βρήκα μια κοινότητα. Μια μπλογκερ που ήταν εκεί για μένα από την αρχή ήταν η Larissa του Prodigal Pieces. Έχει παρουσιάσει το σκουριασμένο παλιό τραπέζι μου, και γνώρισα πολλές άλλες υπέροχες μπλογκερ που συχνάζουν στην ιστοσελίδα της.
After the Summer we were asked to vote yet again, because we had money to throw around on elections in this bankrupt country! We didn’t want elections, we wanted results, but to no avail. I on the other hand had another success with my most personal project to date. The showcase table is a hack of two memorable pieces of furniture. At this point I also started to pay attention to my photography and discovered editing. Thank goodness for that otherwise you’de be stuck looking at pics like the early examples.
Μετά το καλοκαίρι μας ζητήθηκε να ψηφίσουμε ακόμη μια φορά, γιατί είχαμε χρήματα για να πετάμε για εκλογές σε αυτήν την πτωχευμένη χώρα! Εμείς δεν θέλαμε εκλογές, θέλαμε αποτελέσματα, αλλά εις μάτην. Εγώ από την άλλη πλευρά είχα άλλη μια επιτυχία με τ
ο πιο προσωπικό μου έργο. Το Τραπέζι Βιτρίνα είναι ένας συνδυασμός από δύο αξέχαστα κομμάτια. Σε αυτό το σημείο άρχισα να προσέχω τις φωτογραφίες μου και ανακάλυψα πώς να τις επεξεργάζομαι . Ευτυχώς για σας γιατί θα κοιτάζατε φωτογραφίες όπως τα πρώτα παραδείγματα.
Autumn came and so did the closing of many shops in our town. I discovered SEO and the power of the Emperor Google! And slapped my forehead with the realization that I’d have to go back and re-do all those posts that were wrong! But at least I had posts, right?? I also acquired my own Domain and changed my name to “The Boondocks Blog” because ignorant me didn’t know about this stuff before. A highlight: The Fall Vignette.
Ήρθε το φθινόπωρο και το κλείσιμο πολλών καταστημάτων στην πόλη μας. Ανακάλυψα SEO και την εξουσία του αυτοκράτορα Google! Και αποβλακώθηκα με τη διαπίστωση ότι θα πρέπει να ξανακάνω εκ νέου όλες τις λάθος αναρτήσεις! Αλλά τουλάχιστον τις είχα!
Επισεις απέκτησα το δικό μου τομέα και άλλαξα το όνομά σε “The Boondocks Blog”, επειδή στην άγνοια μου δεν ήξερα για αυτά τα πράγματα πριν. Εδώ, Η Φθινοπωρινή Βινιέτα.
Winter came and the taxes along with it. The rate is almost 30 percent at this point. People are abandoning their cars due to their inability to pay for the upkeep. And my contribution to the season is to transform the house using what I have at home, so I can pay my taxes! Thus An Old Fashioned Christmas!
Ήρθε ο χειμώνας και οι φόροι μαζί του. Το ποσοστό είναι σχεδόν 30 τοις εκατό. Οι άνθρωποι εγκαταλείπουν τα αυτοκίνητά τους. Και η συνεισφορά μου για τη σεζόν είναι να μετατρέψω το σπίτι, χρησιμοποιώντας ότι έχω, ώστε να μπορώ να πληρώσω τους φόρους μου! Εδώ τα Παλιομοδιτικα Χριστούγεννα!
Here we are one year later, I can only repeat how stupid I find the politicians who make one mistake after another. Where is the economic growth? Instead we only see more taxes, which we should pay but we need jobs. There is no hope left, the young man who took office a year ago has proven unworthy of the task at hand. In fact I don’t know if anyone is capable of lifting us out of this hole. The country is full of migrants but we don’t have enough to feed our own let alone the tide that is coming in. The blog for me has been a cocoon that has sheltered me from the harsh realities outside my doorstep. I’m aware but I won’t give in to this misery.
Εδώ είμαστε ένα χρόνο αργότερα, μπορώ μόνο να επαναλάβω πόσο ηλίθιους βρίσκω τους πολιτικούς που κάνουν το ένα λάθος μετά το άλλο. Πού είναι η οικονομική ανάπτυξη; Αντί αυτό βλέπουμε μόνο περισσότερους φόρους, τους οποίους πρέπει να πληρώσουμε, αλλά χρειαζόμαστε θέσεις εργασίας. Δεν υπάρχει καμία ελπίδα, ο νεαρός άνδρας που ανέλαβε τα καθήκοντά του πριν από ένα χρόνο έχει αποδείξει ανάξιος για το έργο. Δεν ξέρω αν κάνεις μπορεί να μας βγάλει από αυτή την τρύπα. Η χώρα είναι γεμάτη από μετανάστες, αλλά δεν έχουμε αρκετά για να ταΐσουμε τους δικούς μας πόσο μάλλον το κύμα που έρχεται απ έξω.
Το μπλογκ για μένα ειναι ένα καταφύγιο που με έχει προστατεύει από τη σκληρή πραγματικότητα έξω. Γνωρίζω, αλλά δεν θα υποκύψω στην δυστυχία.
I have been blessed to have met so many wonderful people along the way this past year. Dearest to my heart is my tribe, a group of ladies who are next to me and support me on a daily basis and even put up with my monthly rants. Thank you Pili, of Sweet Things, Katrin of KreativK and Keri of Repurposing Junkie. I also want to thank my family for their patience and the half burnt meals, they probably didn’t think I’d make it this far. Hope and determination will get you far! A hint for the politicians. Finally, I thank you my wonderful visitors, who come here and humor me with my small successes and my epic fails, and maybe a pretty picture or two. I look forward to the second year with hope and lots of enthusiasm.
Ειμαι ευλογημένη που γνώρισα τόσους πολλούς θαυμάσιους ανθρώπους το προηγούμενο έτος. Πρώτη είναι η παρέα μου, μια ομάδα από κυρίες που είναι δίπλα μου και με υποστηρίζουν καθημερινά, ακόμη και όταν θέλω να ξεθυμάνω. Σας ευχαριστώ Pili, του Sweet Things, Katrin του KreativK και Keri του Repurposed Junkie. Θέλω επίσης να ευχαριστήσω την οικογένειά μου για την υπομονή τους και τα μισό καμένα φαγητά, μάλλον δεν πίστευαν ότι θα τα κατάφερνα ως εδώ. Η ελπίδα και η αποφασιστικότητα θα μας πάει μακριά! Κάτι που θα επρεπε να έχουν οι πολιτικοί. Τέλος, ευχαριστώ εσάς, τους υπέροχους επισκέπτες μου που ερχόσαστε εδώ και αντέχετε τις μικρές επιτυχίες μου και επικές αποτυχίες, και ίσως μια όμορφη εικόνα ή δύο. Ανυπομονώ για τη δεύτερη χρονιά με ελπίδα και πολύ ενθουσιασμό.

Δε φαντάζεσαι πόση χαρά νιώθω που μια άξια αγωνίστρια βρέθηκε τυχαία μπροστά μου σε μια τυπική αναζήτηση στο pinterest. Είσαι μια ατίθαση ελληνική ψυχή που δεν υποτάσσεται, δημιουργική και δαιμόνια όπως οι πρόγονοί μας. Δυστυχώς οι επιλογές μας στους πολιτικούς άθλιες.... Mary, first all Congratulations on your first year of blogging!! You've accomplished so much and I'm glad you started blogging and I'm so proud of you!! Secondly, you've lived an incredible life thus far!! You're very brave and your tenacious spirit is awesome!! You have a beautiful family of whom I'm sure you're proud of! :) I'm sorry for the turmoil your country is facing. I pray that God would reach down and lift up Greece and let His glory shine on your country. :) I'm glad to have met you dear friend!

What a great post Mary. So lovely to learn a little more about you, though I am sad your adventure in Greece with your family didn't turn out the way you wanted, but great to hear your sons are doing well in New York - and at least it means you have plenty of excuse for holidays there! It was so interesting to read more about what has happened there in the last few years - I so hope that you have experienced the worst already and recovery is on the way. x

Wow, Mary! Thank you for sharing this, and "Congratulations!" on your blogiversary! I have wondered what it is really like in Greece right now and what is really going on, but you are the only person I know living in Greece and I don't know you well enough to ask such things. I really appreciate your sharing! How frightening to live where there is no hope. I am often concerned that we are travelling the same road in the States.

Thank you Regina. You can always ask me these things. As you may have guessed my blog is about repurposing and yet I felt the need to express these feelings at this time, because had I been happy and care free I may never have started this blog. It's funny how when you have difficulties it can sometimes lead to great things coming your way. I'm just an ordinary person and yet you don't always hear what the regular folks think from the media.
