Sharing is caring!

Last month I showed you how I redid my horrid fireplace. This project was long overdue because it originally looked like this.  Now it’s time to show you the second part of the fireplace makeover. :

This is how it looked about a month ago. I had painted it and hand drawn the stones to give it some visual interest while risking my neck having climbed high up on a ladder. I had to seal it but I was not satisfied, it needed more depth more detail.

Φ

Before the details were added, The Fireplace Makeover part 2 www.theboondocksblog.com
I chose to use these metallic colors that add shine and shimmer to the stones. And no I was not paid for any of this nor compensated in any way.

I just dry brushed lots of detail onto the stone shapes.

After tweaking it for a few days – and I have the photos to prove it but I won’t bore you – I finally decided to say enough is enough, I was satisfied with it.  I also didn’t want a second attempt at breaking my neck. The next step was to add the varnish. Because the chimney is slanted it gathers dust easily and I was not going to risk cleaning it and remove my hard earned stones.

I let that dry for a few days to be sure that the wall had absorbed it all.  The final result was a smooth finish, so soft to the touch that it actually surprised me.  It looks matte now, no more shine but it is as soft as a baby’s bottom.

It’s really hard to capture the nuance and shine of the paint but maybe these side by side photos can show a little bit of the improvement. The first is from before the details were added.

And since I had the paint out I also redid the two wooden frames that were there from before. I added some chalk paint and distressed the edges to let the wood show through.

The frames look much nicer on the mantle now.

I must admit I never expected the fireplace makeover to turn out so well.  Everytime I walk into the room I stop and stare at it and say to myself, “I guess it was worth almost breaking my neck over”.  It has truly transformed the room and become the focal point.

Would you try this at home or is it just me who is ladder happy? On second thought, No – Don’t try this at home, I am only doing it to entertain!

I love how this turned out! It really looks like it was a lot of work! You always have such great ideas! How do you think of them all?

Most of my ideas are born out of necessity. Case in point this awful fireplace and the before. It simply had to get a makeover there was no going back.

I have done the ladder thing. I need to paint again and just don't feel like doing it again. That wall looks quite high but it was so worth it. The fireplace looks terrific. You did a great job.

It's an acrobatics act the ladder thing. But it cannot be avoided. And if I paint the walls and ceiling (I don't even know why I'm feeling so ambitious) then I will be best friends with the ladder. lol

I loved the makeover before, but this is even better. Glad your neck is intact! Well worth the effort!

Thank you Ellen, I'm so glad you can see the difference in the details. I was afraid it wouldn't show in the pictures.

Mary, the fireplace looks awesome!!! I love when the finish on things makes for easy cleaning. It really turned out beautifully. The frames look great too! If I had a fireplace this would definitely be on my to do list.

Keri easy cleaning was a must. It gets so dirty all year long, we open the window in the summer and all this dust comes in. And that slope is like a magnet for the dust and dirt.
