The Majestic Mountains of Greece – H Ορεινή Ελλάδα

Sharing is caring!

Greece is famous for its endless sun and sea.  We have many islands and the coastlines that go along with them. But that is not all we have.  Mainland Greece is actually very mountainous with a sierra running down the length of the country.  About a month ago I took a trip to the mountains… the real boondocks. This trip was in the morning not at sunset like my previous journey to the top of the world. I am showing you a different Greece… the Majestic Mountains of Greece.

A 15 minute drive from the coastline brought us to the mountain peaks full of snow.  The altitude here must be about 3,000 ft.

The area is full of unusual rock formations.

And lots of winding roads.

There is even a monastery built on the side of a rocky mountain.

As the day progressed we reached our destination, a tiny little village cut off from the rest of the world. There are small villages nestled inside the crevices of mountain sides.  Many of them  have very few occupants but in the summertime they are full of life.

Of course no photo essay would be complete without this!  The mountains are full of grazing sheep who block the roads and create major traffic jams.

Yes, Greece is not all beaches and sand. After all, the Ancient Gods all lived up on Mount Olympus… the Majestic Mountains of Greece indeed. Are you surprised to see all these mountains or did you think the Gods frolicked on the beach?

Ναι, η Ελλάδα δεν είναι μόνο παραλίες και άμμο. Αφού οι αρχαίοι Θεοί ζούσαν στον Όλυμπο … στην Ορεινή Ελλάδα. Εκπλαγείτε με όλα αυτά τα βουνά ή μήπως νομίζατε ότι οι Θεοί διασκέδαζαν στην παραλία;

Mary, Greece is beautiful! I must admit, I don't associate it with mountains, especially snowy ones, so this is really stunning to see! Thank you for your tour, your photos are all amazing and I really enjoyed "visiting" your part of Greece!

It is a country full of contradictions. This was taken at the start of April and the snow had not melted yet, but we are talking about altitude. I'm sure it must get really cold at night up there. Thanks for your sweet words.

Beautiful pictures! The second to the last one reminded me on the Jemez mountains in New Mexico. I was surprised at how much snow you still have on the mountains. Is there skiing in Greece? The monastery on side of the mountain is amazing.

There are lots of ski resorts in Greece because we have lots of mountains. The photos were taken at the start of April so it was still a bit chilly up there. The monestary was originally built in 362 AD. Very old. Many were built up in the mountains to hide away from attackers.
