Celebrating May Day - Γιορτάζουμε την Πρωτομαγιά

Sharing is caring!

Today is Easter Sunday – at least for the Orthodox Christian world it is. We have a mobile date for Easter so next year it will be a different date and I am not going to confuse you any more. I want to wish everyone who celebrates a very Happy Easter. And here is a post to see how we celebrate.

As for the rest of the world, we are here to celebrate May Day.

This date takes on a double meaning here in Greece.  It is the traditional celebration of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  It is also the International Worker’s Day in celebration of workers and the working classes, which is celebrated in September in the US.

Today I am going to celebrate the former with you. Every first of May I go to the countryside with my family.  We have a picnic, eat too much (we never need an excuse for that) and after a nap, we pick flowers which are then made into a wreath. Below is my sour cherry tree.

My wreath does not get any easier than this. I form a circle using a piece of wire.

After I cut branches off the sour cherry tree I just wrapped them around the wire.

To keep the branches in place I used the tie its from the toast bread (always recycling).

I use quite a bit of the tree branches to make it nice and full.

Then it is time to add this stuff.  It is vetch and is used as fodder.  I just like the way it looks….

The last step is to add sage.

And I am done!  I hang it up on the wall and let it dry.

I actually love making wreaths so much I have a whole collection of them here.

It is nice to walk by it each day and watch the process of the drying of the flowers.

It doesn’t get any easier. Just use what nature has to offer, she is so very generous. My May Day project is done and I am off to eat my Easter feast. Do you do anything special to Celebrate May Day?

Δεν γίνεται πιο απλό! Απλά χρησιμοποιήστε ό,τι έχει να προσφέρει η φύση, είναι τόσο γενναιόδωρη. Το Πρωτομαγιάτικο μου στεφάνι ειναι έτοιμο και εγώ  πάω για να απολαύσω το Πασχαλινό  μου δείπνο.  Εσείς κάνετε κάτι ιδιαίτερο για να Γιορτάστε την Πρωτομαγιά;

What a lovely wreath! Sounds like a fun day for the family. Don't know when the last time I went on a picnic.

Happy Easter and May Day, Mary! Your fresh wreath is so pretty. Over here it is simply the first of May but it is Sunday and I'm looking forward to having my children, their significant others, and that adorable grandson of ours over for Sunday Supper. Steak is on the menu tonight and hopefully we can enjoy cocktails on the deck before dinner on this glorious sunny day. Enjoy your feast my friend!

Thank you dear Marie! We are still at it and it is now Friday. Today we celebrate the local church. All the stores are closed and tonight we go out for festivities. Oh when will it end, so I can get back to the business of blogging?
