The best DIY Mother’s Day gifts are thoughtful and crafted with love. We have over 20 Mother’s Day DIY ideas that are sure to make mom happy.

Thoughtful handmade DIY Mother’s Day gifts are the ultimate way to show mom how much you love and appreciate her. And it doesn’t have to cost a lot: we have over 20 creative DIY gifts for mom that are sure to make her happy.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner and we all know that this is the most important day of the year (wink). Everyone is out there buying expensive flowers and candy for their moms. But is that what moms really want for Mother’s Day?

I have a different idea. I think it should be a day where we show our appreciation for everything our mother has done not by spending money but by doing something special.  Maybe we can cook for her or serve her breakfast in bed.  (Kids are you reading this?)

Aside from these gestures, there are so many easy DIY Mother’s Day gifts that you can make with mostly items you already have at home. From thoughtful art to personalized decor we think you’ll find the perfect handmade gift to give mom this year!

20+ Thoughtful DIY Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

1. Handcrafted Flower Vases

If you have a couple tin cans and some fabric, make mom some cute vases to hold seasonal or faux flowers. My Sweet Things created a simple and very pretty vase for mom’s hand picked flowers.

Alternatively, paint and decoupage a larger coffee tin, and fill it with a pretty bouquet of flowers for mom.

2. Dressed up Kitchen Utensils

If your mom spends a lot of time in the kitchen like ours does, why not gift her some embellished utensils?

KreativK shows us how to spruce up kitchen utensils for a pretty look to keep mom happy while she’s in the kitchen.

Or try this variation for a more colorful option.

3. Cute Fridge Magnets

Because moms always need magnets to hold up their kids artwork on the fridge, Repurposing Junkie took some old tiles and turned them into cute magnets.

Or press some of her favorite flowers and turn them into magents with resin.

4. A One-of-a-Kind Jewelry Box

If some of you are feeling a bit ambitious, you can try your hand at upcycling mom’s old  jewelry box as this one by The Interior Frugalista .  I know I would love this from my kids!

Another option is to dress up a plain jewelry box from the craft store with a bit of paint!

5. Embellished Photo Frame

Take mom’s old tired picture frames and give them a refresh as I did here … you know she wants you to!  And don’t forget to fill them with your lovely mug!

Or grab one of these beautiful free Mother’s Day printables and place it in a pretty frame.

6. DIY Trinket Tray

Another cool gift is this bowl which Bisozozo made with clay.  It is perfect for my keys or spare change.

Or decoupage some seashells to make a little tray for her rings!

7. Handmade Coasters

I don’t like water marks on my furniture and these coasters  from KreativK are so easy to personalize.

Or if you have a map from a special trip together, or someplace mom would love to travel to, use that to create these easy map coasters.

8. Repurposed Serving Tray

Create a trully stunning piece of art for mom with this simple decoupaged serving tray idea.

Repurpose an old tray into a frame and place a special keepsake inside for mom to think of you, as I did with my son’s painting.

Or a handy gardening apron for a mom who likes to spend time outdoors!

10. Framed DIY Decor

You can create this pretty butterfly decor for mom with an old frame and cereal box! Just create a little butterfly tempalte and cut out the shapes from some cardboard then mount them in the frame. This is such a perfect idea if she’s a nature lover.

Or if mom loves flowers, created a little piece of paper flower art like these peonies made with a Cricut machine.

11. Upcycled Baskets

Got an old basket?  No problem, nothing a little paint job from My Sweet Things couldn’t fix!  Now it’s ready for tea time!

Or fill a wicker basket with her favorite faux florals that she can display on her mantle!

12. Repurposed Bottle Decor

Create a pretty arrangement of decoupaged bottles that you can fill with flowers from her garden or just group together for pretty decor.

Alternatively, spray some glass bottles with frosted spray and fill with twinkle lights for some pretty decor that she can update throughout the year with different seasonal flowers.

13. Simple DIY Jewelry Organizer

I would love to have this pretty earring hanger using a vintage doily and repurposed frame. It’s functional and beautiful!

If you have a piece of scrap wood, you can create this lovely jewelry organizer with little buttons.

For an even simpler necklace organizer, string some twine on the back of a frame, criss-crossing all the way down.

We hope you’re inspired to make something thoughtful for Mother’s Day and that we’ve convinced you it doesn’t have to cost a lot to let mom know you’re thinking of her!

We’re wishing a blessed and Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and grandmothers out there!  What would you like for your special day?

  10. I love the idea behind painting bottles into vases and covering vases with fabric, they seem like a great way to re-purpose simple items and turn them into gifts! Although I love the D.I.Y. ideas, I also agree with you, Mother’s Day should also be about doing great things for Mom–cooking her breakfast in bed, completing chores without being asked, etc.

    1. Brooke I am really big on repurposing things I love to do good by our planet earth and would never encourage anyone to shop for me unless it was clothing or something I couldn’t make. .

  12. Hi Mary, I think we are the only family that doesn’t acknowledge Mothers Day, it’s just not a big thing to me (although me and my sister always treated my Mum when we were growing up).
However saying that I love those magnets, very pretty and the ones on our fridge are looking dated now. I also wouldn’t turn my nose up at the picture frame… Although I’d probably prefer a picture of the dog in it!
    xx

    1. The magnets are lovely aren’t they. I have some very talented friends. Some of these are really easy and can be given as gifts at any time of the year. I have to agree about the dog pic. My sweet dog has a special place in my heart.

  13. I love the old basket! My mom has a hard time carrying things so she would totally love this! Great ideas.

    1. The basket looks so refined once Pili had painted it. And you can always use another basket.

  14. Hi Mary, I can’t believe I didn’t stop by last year and leave a comment to say thanks for including my embroidered bag project. Sorry about that.
This is a great collection of ideas, I agree, home made gifts are the best. My kids usually make a cake which is lovely and most years I get breakfast in bed. (though we have our mothers day in March so I’ve already had mine! )
