How to Make an Easy Frame Jewelry Organizer

Sharing is caring!

It is the tenth of the month and that means it’s time for me to join my friends on Ten on the Tenth for another project.  This time we have gotten together to share fashion and beauty ideas that cost less then ten dollars. Last month we shared container gardening ideas.

Now I’m no Fashion Diva, in fact the opposite is true. But I do know that being organized is important for all the Divas out there who need to find their jewelry pronto!  Because you’re not gonna get me to give you fashion advice!

But I will say this, I think it would make a fine Mother’s Day gift!  It is so easy to make this frame jewelry organizer.

I’ve been working on that girls’ room for months now and it is still in need of things.  Oh will those girls ever be content?  😉  This time around, they asked me for a jewelry organizer!  I had this left over picture frame and knew it would be a perfect candidate for a makeover!  Had it been something like this I would have been reluctant to take it apart!

What I Used:

The How To:

Once all of the artwork was removed, we got down to business and painted the frame a soft metallic gray color. Since we didn’t have that color on hand, we mixed the white  and metallic paints together to give us this translucent gray. I prefer this then the standard metallic gray because it comes out much softer.

Did I mention that my girl helped me with this part?

After two coats we hung it up to dry.

A few hours later it was time to work on the back.

If you know anything about me at all it is that I love twine.  There is something about this simple material that makes me want to use it  over and  over again.

I had turned the frame over to remove the staples that had been there from who knows when, and that is when an epiphany came over me.  Why not work with those staples and thread the twine through them?

I passed  the twine through the top corner staple and knotted it so it would stay put when pulled on.

I pulled it through to the other side and passed it through the opposite staple which was diagonally across from the first.

And so it went till I got to the bottom of the frame.  If there was a spot that didn’t have a staple I added one to keep the look of the twine consistent.

I eyeballed the distances, no need to be perfect here, after all we are talking about twine.

Flip it over and we have this.

Then onto the fun part, hanging the girl’s jewelry.

And the bowl is for things that don’t hang.

All I had to do was clasp everything onto the twine.  And the earrings with the hooks hang on easily.

I had made an earring organizer a few years back but sadly we left it in Greece and ended up gifting it to a friend of my daughters.

The girls like it so much they have placed it on top of the night stand so that they have easy access to all their baubles.

This took me about two hours to make, allowing time for the paint to dry thoroughly.

As for the cost, well it cost me nothing because I already had everything on hand.  If you were to buy the items excluding the frame and the staple gun, it will cost you about 8 dollars. Not bad for a jewelry organizer!

Now my girls are happy with their new jewelry organizer which was so easy to make.  And I am also happy because I was able to share this with you.

I think it is a great DIY project for Mother’s Day too since it is very easy and I bet you have a picture frame at home just begging to be repurposed!

Love the color! pinning this to my recyle board! Its such a useful way to store jewlery.

  2. This frame looks so cute. It is a wall art and and organizer the same time. I love you used twine and not wire!!! Love it!!!

  3. Marie says:

I bet your girls are loving this in their new room! What a great idea for a Mother’s Day gift too. P.S. I hear you about the fashionista thing – I’m so not either.

    • Mary says:

I think so too Marie. If I wore jewelry which I am too minimalist at this point, I would want something simple like that to hang my bling. As it is I have lots of shelves with paint colors. Lol!

  4. Jann Olson says:

What a fun idea! I just donated one that I had chicken wire in a frame to a thrift. Used it for years, but it was hard to attach the jewelry through the chicken wire. This would be much easier. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  5. Love this idea, Mary! Not to mention that cute bowl next to it!

  6. Such a cute idea for organzing and holding necklaces and earrings!

  7. This could work really well in a small home! Pinned!

    • Mary says:

Absolutely, and my home is really small but I’m trying to lighten everything and create the illusion of space.

  8. Julie says:

You and your twine! It is a lovely material to work with isn’t it? Lots of texture and perfect for this as the earrings and necklaces won’t slide together.
For $0 this is a pretty awesome bargain!

  9. Kim says:

Mary, I love this. I take my jewelry off all over the house. I should make one and keep it in the kitchen so I don’t lose my stuff!

    • Mary says:

That is a great idea Kim. It is simple and doesn’t have to take up much space depending on the size of the frame.

  10. Dear Mary,
thank you so much for sharing your fabulous idea at my latest link party. I love this genius storage and display idea for necklaces!
I hope to welcome you back soon,
    warm regards,

  11. The frame and twine make a very pretty jewelry organizer. Cute sitting, but would also be pretty hanging.

    • Mary says:

So far we have not hung anything up on the walls except for the fairy lights. They are feeling very minimalist these days. But if they change their minds they can do it easily.

  12. Michele says:

I love this jewelry organizer- it is practical and fashionable! I don’t have a lot of jewelry, but I do get frustrated when things get tangled. I also don’t wear what I have because out of sight, out of mind! It looks lovely with the pretty blue bowl, which is perfect for bracelets!

    • Mary says:

Michele that is exactly the reason I bother to make these things. We all have boxes to put this stuff in but then that is where it stays – in the boxes. This way they can see what they have.

  13. Laura says:

    This is so creative Mary!
You do the best tutorials and your photos are always perfect.

  14. This is a great idea. You make it look so easy. It looks adorable too.

  15. Your Jewelry Organizer is great. I need to make one of these for myself.

  16. Tammy says:

So cute! I made a similar one with small “chicken” wire, but I love this one so much more! Great idea.

  17. You have to run the twine North to South and back , not side to side , in order to knot the twine off.
    Ask me why.
    Cath

  18. I am in love with this! This would be so fun to make, and to give to my niece. I think she would absolutely love it, too! Thank you for the great idea!

  19. Love your idea of putting twine in the frame for hanging jewelry Mary. It’s such great and easy way to display things and it looks good too

  20. Katrin says:

Mary this is the cutest little frame and I love the color you chose for it! I’ve been wanting to make something like this for ages, my necklaces are always tangled!

  21. Mary I used a frame and wire once to make a “bulletin board”, but I love the idea of using it for jewelry. Great idea and super cute.

  22. This turned out so nice. It is a great way to upcycle an old frame. Plus it makes for a nice piece of artwork. I am fond of twine also so as soon as you said twine you got my attention.

    • Mary says:

Debra you are my twine twin sister! I really liked that this project was super simple in keeping with the theme of the bedroom too. The girls picked out the color of the frame.

  23. This is a great idea – I can imagine it hanging in my bedroom with my favorite pieces! Perfect for a teenager’s room, too!
