When I first started this blog I was so ignorant. I did not know my chalky style paint from enamel paint. All I knew was that I did not like the brand of paint they sold at the paint store. For furniture there was only one brand that was available, a sort of enamel, that was really hard to work with. It would dry too quickly and it would run. If you were around during my first month of blogging you may have gotten to see this little table. Well it doesn’t look like this any more, I now call it the doily top side table.
Disclosure: I was compensated for doing this post with product. However, all the opinions stated here are my own. I only use products I love and would recommend to my viewers.
It may have looked nice but in fact it was full of that awful enamel paint. And it was as boring as wonder bread. It definitely needed a makeover. The top was so bad I had covered it with a piece of fabric because before I had painted it white, there was a fabric glued onto the top.
What I Used:
The How To:
The top of the table was full of old paint and glue. Instead of removing it, I just painted over it using Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint by DecoArt. As you can see it has loads of texture and I’m a bit lazy… no, there is a reason to my madness. (If you’d like to purchase this paint I have included Amazon links at the end of the post.)
I then distressed it with sandpaper, especially on the sides where there is a lovely indentation. I also chose to paint some areas of it with the blue.
To give it a bit more interest, I added some blue to this area as well.
I had originally told you that I would be adding something to my beach table, but as things turned out I decided to keep it simple and just add a coat of varnish for protection. Instead I opted to try this idea on the side table instead. I had gotten my original inspiration here from Capitulo dos Vintage. She is an amazing artist and has so many incredible projects. Mine was a poor copy of what she did to her table.
These are paper doilies. I bought a pack of ten at the supermarket and cut them up.
I then decoupaged them on the table top with Mod Podge..
I traced a circle with a pencil and filled in that area with random pieces of the paper doily.
You can see the mod podge here. Once it dries it will not show.
I painted the knob blue for a fun look and rubbed on a beeswax finish to protect all of the blue painted areas.
And I was done.

The inside was also painted to give it some interest.
Here are both pieces side by side. The color is the same. The only difference is that the round table has chalky style paint on the legs. The side table has that difficult to use white enamel.
I am really loving the blue accent on the sides.
It looks like something grandma would have in her home. A bit of old world charm. The good thing is that the doily does not move around on the top.
So there it is, my doily top side table. I certainly enjoyed experimenting with this little side table and doing something different. Do you like what I did with it? Do you think this decoupage treatment would have looked good on the round beach table, or would it have been too fussy?
Αυτό ειναι το τραπεζάκι με σεμεδάκι. Σίγουρα απόλαυσα πειραματίζοντας με το μικρό τραπέζι. Σας αρέσει αυτό που έκανα; Πιστεύετε ότι αυτή η επεξεργασία ντεκουπάζ θα φαινόταν καλό στο τραπέζι θάλασσας, ή θα ήταν πάρα πολύ λεπτομερεια;

Thank you so much Jodie. I think it really needed a touch of color.
Always a great DIY project on your lovely blog! Thanks for sharing at Welcome Home Wednesdays! See you tomorrow!
Thank you Erin. It was a welcome surprise when sanded off some of that white and added the blue to the side.
Mary, your side table turned out fabulous!! I love the colours that you used and most of all the doily effect on the top! So clever!!
Thank you so much for sharing over at Waste Not Wednesday and look forward to seeing what cleverness you share with us this week!! 🙂
Thank you Sam. It needed a makeover and relief from all the white.
Such a lovely companion piece for your larger, round table, Mary. I just love your creativity and the way your mind works. Nice job! Thanks for sharing your posts with us at Vintage Charm 🙂
Diana thank you. I am so happy with the way it turned out and it complements the round table without being an exact copy.
You made it look more vintage. I have a dvd storage rack that’s getting a new look. But it’s my first so I get a bit frustrated and call on my husband for backup. Thanks for sharing on Family Joy Blog Link-up. Please come back and join us again!
Charlotte, it will be fun to transform an old, tired piece. Once you’re done you’ll stand back and look at it and not believe your eyes.
Such a cute makeover! I love the color combo!
Thanks Monroe, this one was a bit out of my comfort zone but it turned out fine in the end.
Mary, I like the way the 2 tables coordinate, but aren’t exactly alike, it adds so much character to your home. I would have been perplexed by the top covered in fabric, I would have probably given up on the project. But really like what you did with some cheap doilies and mod podge! It looks like a totally different piece.
I agree, enamel paint is the worst! I hate it. I still have not tried the paint made with chalk, but it will be my next investment!
Nikki, the original piece was a dark wood and on top was a piece of tapestry like fabric that was super glued onto the top. I don’t know why but when I ripped it off, it looked awful. Now I did all this in my pre-blogger days so it was hard for me to transform it. That is why I had put a piece of fabric on top, to cover the mess. Now I can breath a sign of relief.
Your table looks great! You did an amazing job <3
Blessings,
Edye | http://gracefulcoffee.wordpress.com
Thank you so much Edye. It is much better than plain white.
Love the look! Aren’t paper doilies so fun? I use them often in my crafting. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Jann, I just discovered them for the first time. They really were fun to use and make such an impact.
Hey, I like the table Mary! Love the blue and white. I’m a sucker for doilies & always have been. I know you are going to enjoy using that.
Absolutely Florence I really wanted to get away from the all white and that top needed help desperately.
I like the choice you made for the decoupage. That little table looks weathered beautifully and something about the doily makes that look like it was done back in the day as well. I think it made it just that much more of a treasure
Debbie you get what I was trying to achieve. I wanted it to look weathered yes! Because in fact it is quite old so why not show it off.
I love all the blue and the distressing you did! It looks terrific! Then the doily on top adds so much dimension. Lovely job! Thanks for sharing at Dishing It & Digging It! We enjoy seeing your projects each week!
Blessings,
Lori
Thank you so much Lori for your kind words. Sometimes we have a perfectly nice piece but want to change it up for whatever reason and this one just needed a bit of a change from the all white.
Cute project! I love the blue and white. You can’t go wrong with mod podge.
Mod Podge cures everything! 🙂
Love all the distressing on this little romantic beach table Mary, decoupage is a great design choice for hiding the glue. thanks for sharing it at #fridaysfurnituefix !
I’m in love with your blue and white tables Mary. Come on down and help me make my furniture pretty!
I would love to do that Carol!!
You have done a great work. It´s looking so lovely!
Thank you so much Simona.
That little table turned out just DARLING! Thanks for sharing with us at the To Grandma’s house we go link party, I’m featuring you this week!
Thank you so much Tarah!!
What a great makeover! I love the little touches of blue you have added. It’s the perfect amount, and in all of the right places. I also love the doilies and the texture on the top of the table. Awesome job!
Thank you so much Amy. It needed a bit something to give it personality.
What a gorgeous side table makeover, Mary! I love the colour blue you have used, and the doilies make it extra special! Pinning. Thank you so much for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party!
Thank you April. There are such easy ways to add interest to a plain table.
Such a pretty little table, I must have missed this when you first shared it as I’m sure I would have remembered it! Thanks for sharing it with us at Handmade Monday
A fantastic makeover Mary! I love the added vintage touch with the doilies!
This one has a little of everything in it. Shabby, rustic and the doily. I think I overdid it. Haha!
Cute projects Mary. I love both chalk paint and Modge Podge! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
This was such a great project for me to do, I really enjoyed the transformation.
I love the doilies, the colors and the way the two pieces complement each other! Thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm!
Thanks so much Cecilia. I think I need to start taking some risks like I did with this one.
The sanded edges with the blue brushed on is my favorite part! Your use of color created lovely look for this side table.
Audra that is my favorite part too. And that color.
Hi Mary. Your re-do of this table is awesome! I love the blue top and the addition of the doilies! Thanks for sharing at Party in Your PJs.
Thank you so much Donna! It is one of my faves.
Mary you really made the top of the side table look it’s best , it looks so charming with the blue background and white doilies on top! I also love that distressed look you gave it, I think it would look great on the bigger table as well! Lovely paint!!
Hum Katrin now you ‘ve got me to thinking. Maybe on the legs I could distress it a bit. I personally love the distressed look. It gives a piece so much character, especially when it is obviously old.
Super cute table makeover, Mary! I just love love love that blue color (surprise surprise)! The addition of the doily is so neat. Love how you Mod Podged it to the table to make a really neat design!
Thank you Celeste. I am really loving that blue too. And like it paired with the wood color too. The doily was an extra touch, I wanted to add a little something to the top because it is not smooth at all, so I figure I would work with the texture.
You think of it all. I love the doily addition! It adds a gentle pizzazz.
Kellie, you have said it perfectly, a gentle pizzazz. Because it is too gentile a table to be overdone.
Love the color, Mary & love how you painted the inside blue as well. Nice job!
I was not being subtle at all with this one, after all it was quite boring before Cathy.
You have so inspired me to use chalk paint I loved the blue and white table you did a few posts ago and this came out entirely different but equally as nice.
I can go on and on about this Chalky type paint. I love how easily it goes on and it is such an easy way to transform a piece of furniture. I hope you have a chance to try it.
I love how you redid this sweet little table, the doilies look so cute!
Tania
And the best part Tania, they are not going anywhere, no slipping around like grandma’s doily.
Mary, I love what you did to the side table!! Mod podging doilies onto the top was such a beautiful idea!! I think it looks wonderful! I really like the chippy look on this piece, the perfect touch for it!! As far as putting doilies on the big table, I think it would have looked great there too, but obviously that’s up to you. 🙂
Keri my favorite moment was when I used my sanding paper and took off lots of white to reveal what was underneath. I loved it so much and then adding a bit of the blue to it here and there. It made me so happy. I must be a furniture fool. lol. The big table for now is being used so much I’m afraid to add anything else to it. I’ve added two coats of varnish for protection for now.
I like how the doily adds interest and texture. The blue is the blue of the sea and so pretty. I’m glad you kept both tables the same color but they are different. Nice job.
Yes Debra I too like that they are not too matchy. And I think that has to be my favorite blue, although I came up with it by accident. Haha!
That’s such a pretty color blue, and the addition of the blue knob and blue on the sides with distressing ties everything together so nicely. I think everything looks great as is. If you did the table also it might look too ‘matchy matchy’, but now they look perfectly coordinated.
It’s so true that blogging is a learning experience! Chalk paint? Milk paint? Never heard of them before either.
Have a great week Mary!
xxz
Doreen for now they’ll be in the same room, but even if they aren’t they still have their own personality. And you are right, I don’t want it too matchy matchy.
So many paint choices, and so little time!
Wow! Your table looks amazing! I love how you used the doily to create such a unique look. And the distressed look you gave the table is so beautiful! I’d love to be able to do that. 🙂
Mandy it is not hard at all, just grab some sanding paper and go at it. It is one good way to get your frustrations out. haha. Thank you for the sweet comment.
It really looks great, Mary! I love decoupaging onto furniture, and those doilies add interest to the table. I agree with enamel paint, it’s such a mess! It’s not about being lazy but to work efficient and effortless, so chalk paint is the way to go. Great job!
I was going for a bit of a softer look with the light blue color and so I thought the doilies would add interest. Yes I love the chalky paint. I will never go back to enamels. Thank you Pili.
I really loved it and it;s a perfect mach with your table!
Yes it is Katerina. I wanted to put them both in the same room but not have them too matchy. The round table needs to be functional as it is used so much so a coat of varnish should keep it safe.
Mary, your doily side table is gorgeous. Love the touch of the doilies on top. I have heard great things about chalk paint. Love your round table as well. Both pieces look fantastic!
Kim, Chalky Style paint is the greatest thing. I cannot say enough wonderful things about it. I am painting everything in sight with it. I am even using it on metal objects.
What a pretty makeover for this cute little cabinet, Mary! I’m not much of a DIYer but I do have soem old furniture ieces waiting to be painted in my garage and so I’m pinning this to Ointerest to give me inspiration when I finally get to paint them
Pat, I’m always happy when I can inspire. I am just an average person with no special skills, just what I have been learning from other bloggers. If I can do this, anyone can.
Mary, what a cute side table. I love the homey look of distressed furniture. You did a fantastic job with this! Thank you so much for sharing with us at #SimplifyWednesdays Pinned, Tweeted, Shared, Stumbled
Carla, I really fell in love with that blue color and wanted to give some much needed life to that table.
Your side table turned out very pretty! I love how you decoupaging the doily on the top, the pretty blue color, and the way you distressed it. I think the other table would look pretty with a doily decoupaging on top as well.
Thank you Linda. I also love the combination of the blue and the wood together. As for the round table, I want to see how it stands up to daily use first and then I’ll see if it will be made prettier.
Great work, you really gave it a new lease of life
Mollyxxx
Molly I was determined to spruce it up a bit and I really love that blue color.
I like the paint. The table is insane, and the cabinet is a charming vintage.
Thank you Holly. My sentiments exactly. Paint really does transform.
Cute tables, I love the blue accents. I have always loved blue and I’m glad is back in vogue now!
I can’t imagine such a pretty color ever going out of style. It always look fresh and full of cheer.
The blue and white work so well together and the distressed look on the sides is OMW…. just gorgeous. The doilies add such a nice touch too.
The distressing on the sides was my favorite part of this table. The way the wood shone throught. I think I’d like to experiment more with this look.
I love all the little blue touches on the side table, they are like little promises and surprises waiting to be discovered when you open up the door.
Aww Stella, you have put it so eloquently. I on the other hand felt like a little kid taking something apart and putting it back together in a different way.
Hello Mary,
I simply love your doily top side table. The decoupage is such a brilliant idea and it looks absolutely perfect to me!
Have a nice week,
Marjan
Thank you so much Marjan. It was all full of surprises after I got a hold of it and decided to get rid of some of the white.
So cute, and I love the colour. Also love the screen in the photos – it’s gorgeous too – did you recover it yourself?
The screen has its own post actually. I built it to hide the elephant in the room, which is a big fat washing machine. And I have added two different fabrics to it. Here is the link if you are interested. https://www.theboondocksblog.com/home/-hiding-the-washing-machine
You gave this table a cute makeover Mary! It shows the amazing and endless ideas you can do with decoupage!
Decoupage is so versatile and so much fun to use. You can easily transform anything with this technique.
