Christmas in July – Repurposed Rustic Wood Slices

Sharing is caring!

It’s the last Wednesday for our Christmas in July Blog Hop.  I am hosting this blog hop with a group of talented bloggers and we have been bringing all sorts of Christmas ideas your way.  We know you have been following along and adding your Christmas projects because well, my post is down to there full. And that makes me very happy. A few weeks ago I repurposed a broken mirror.  And last week I repurposed Barbie Paddles that belonged to my daughters.  This week I am going back to my archives to show you an older project that I did in the early days of my blogging, my repurposed rustic wood slices.

You may have noticed in my Christmas in July projects, I am not satisfied with just showing you a Christmas post.  I like to squeeze all the mileage I can out of a project and always try to repurpose them so that they can be used all year long.

These wood slices are outlined using Christmas cookie cutters and then just painted over with black paint. I then  hung them on the wall with twine. Very simple and very effective. But I could not leave them alone, I had to repurpose them for year long use.  Find out the details here

I want to thank all of you for participating in this fun Christmas in July Blog Hop. I had lots of fun looking over all of your posts. Now that we have some relax time, let’s use some of those Christmas ideas so we can have a less stressful holiday six months from now.

  1. I love these Mary! I do a lot with wood slices at Christmas and they are always a big hit. I just love the look of the wood and the rustic touch it adds. So cute <3

  2. Nice project. Seems simple and easy. I would have never thought of just painting them and using the cookie cutter as a stencil. What a great idea. Loved the blog hop. Inspired me to start thinking of Christmas early this year.

    • Mary says:

I am so happy to hear that. I have to admit when I first heard about this idea from my friends it seemed strange to me, but once I got into the spirit of things it was so much fun.

  3. Eleana A says:

Mary I am away as you know but I love Christmas and I wouldn’t mind working on such projects all year around!! At the moment I am listening to Christmas music!! Your wooden slices are beautifull!

    • Mary says:

Eleana, you are on the beach drinking ouzo and listening to bouzouki. There is no Christmas music in Greece right now. I only hear the dance music coming out of the cars. Thank you and I hope you make this easy craft for your home.

  4. debbie says:

We have vacation rental homes on the lake that these would look great in. Simplicity and nature in one! Love it

  5. Diana says:

Neat idea, Mary 🙂 Wood slices of any kind are so “in” right now. Thanks for linking up with Vintage Charm!!

    • Mary says:

They really add a nice warm and rustic touch to the home. Anything from nature really livens up the place, I even bring in branches from the trees.

  6. What a great party idea! Love your wood slice ornaments. Cute!

  7. I am a huge fan of wood slices, there are so many cool things you can do with them. And these turned out awesome. I love how they are using wood slices for candle sticks, cake stands, risers for decor. Love them. Our home is more clean and streamlined, but I love accenting with wood slices, rustic pieces and burlap. These would fit right in!

    • Mary says:

I too love them Nikki and have had these since before I started blogging. They bring so much rustic goodness to my home decor.

  8. These turned out so sweet, Mary! I love them! Such a cute project!

    • Mary says:

Sam I’ve had them for over a year and a half and have gotten so much use out of them. That rustic goodness never disappoints.

  9. Angie Rose says:

    What a cute project 🙂

  10. I really enjoyed these post series! Great work!

    • Mary says:

It has been a fun experience, although I could use a cool place to feel more in touch with Christmas.

  11. Maya says:

Mary, this is such a cute an inexpensive idea! Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Mary says:

It is and I know with a little imagination we can always find more than one use for our things.

  12. Katrin says:

I remember those wood slice ornaments from last Christmas Mary and they look great! I am planning on doing something using wood slices for this fall or Christmas coming up, a great reminder!

    • Mary says:

I really do use them all year long. It’s a simple way to add a rustic touch. Oh and looking forward to your slices as well.

  13. Keri says:

Mary, your wood slice ornaments are awesome!! My favorite part is that they can be used for year round! Another wonderful repurpose!

    • Mary says:

I liked them so much for Christmas that I didn’t want to pack them away so I came up with this idea.

  14. Laurie says:

Mary, I love your rustic wood ornaments! Using cookie cutters for the design is genius! Thanks so much for sharing! Pinned to share.

    • Mary says:

Laurie, better to use templates than to mess it up. I really enjoyed this blog hop, and from the looks of it, so did many other bloggers. 🙂

  15. Beverly says:

I love the idea of using a cookie cutter as a template. Great idea, Mary! Your ornaments look great! I had a look at how you repuposed them to use year round, too. Wonderful idea!

    • Mary says:

I have them displayed in the stairwell now, all year long! Beverly, this is what makes me happy. To not have to hide them.

  16. I love your wooden ornaments and how you can personalize them to your favorite Christmas motif using cookie cutters.

  17. Melony says:

Those ornaments would look awesome in a country styled home!!

    • Mary says:

You are so right Melony. And although mine is not exactly country ( I don’t know what it is) they do add a rustic element.

  18. Love your wood slice ornaments Mary! They turned out really cute! Brilliant idea repurposing them so that you can use them year round.

    • Mary says:

This was one of my first projects when I started the blog. But the repurposing came after the holidays I thought it would be a shame to put them away.

  19. Millie says:

simple but beautiful! off to see the changes 🙂 you are so super creative and thrifty Mary!

  20. Hi Mary, very rustic ornaments. I’ve actually started to think about buying Christmas presents, and have already got a couple of ideas. I like to be sorted early!
    xx

    • Mary says:

That’s the spirit Debbie! I know it can be hard with all this heat but it makes it easier when winter rolls around.

  21. Love your trendy wood slice ornaments, Mary! And I love that you can repurpose them on the other side with initials! Cute, cute, cute!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Gail, I figure there is no need to hide the cuteness when it’s not Christmas.
