As I was taking a walk along the beach with the hubby, we discovered this lovely. It was a life saver and we decided to save it.
My hubby who is an avid fisherman, immediately picked it up and examined it. He noticed that it was damaged otherwise he could have used it on his boat.
And since when are we afraid of a little damage? We, who as partners have leaped into the world of DIY’s and are fearless in the face of defects? We looked at each other and … game on!! We would nurse this baby back to health!
He applied polyester resin to the damage. And then placed the fiberglass sheet on top. Then more polyester resin to soak the sheet. These bond together to form a solid fiberglass material which is very strong.

He ended up putting three sheets of the fiberglass and then soaked them in resin.
We let it dry overnight and then sanded it to get rid of the sharp edges. No more damage!
I sealed it with some tape for extra protection from the fiberglass. At this point, he could have taken it to the boat, but he didn’t need it just yet. He wanted it as a spare. So we made a deal. I would use it as decoration and when he needed it I would hand it over. Now it was my turn to take over.
I cut up an old jean dress into strips and wrpped them around the lifesaver. And some twine and a ribbon. You would be surprised at how much clothing I have begun to hoard ever since I started this blog. Is this a good thing?
ναυαγοσώστη. Και λίγο σπάγγο και κορδέλα. Θα εκπλαγείτε πόσα ρούχα έχω αρχίσει να συσσωρεύω από τότε που ξεκίνησα αυτό το blog. Αυτό είναι καλό πράγμα;
And here we have the finished product…ooops!! Nature getting in the way of my photography session!
I was going for a rustic/beachy feel. What do you think, did I achieve it?
Πήγαινα για ρουστίκ / θαλασσινή αίσθηση. Τι νομίζετε, το πέτυχα;
Before: Πριν:
We repaired the lifesaver, a poor, lost on the beach life saver, turned it into a free wall decoration. And if need be, the hubs has a spare lifesaver for his boat – after all he did half the work, the least I can do is share!

Thank you Dianne, it is a fun and whimsical take on the life saver.
You two did a fantastic job on the saver Mary! It looks fantastic with its new “attire”!
Haha! Maya I still have it at home. Lucky for me the hubs hasn’t needed it yet.
Really like this makeover, Mary. Your new lifesaver looks like something Pottery Barn Kids would charge a fortune for. And how fun you got to with the Mr.! Hope all is well, Cynthia
Cynthia what a compliment! Thank you so much. I remember back in the day when Pottery Barn was priced for us normal folks. I hope I get to keep this one at home for a while longer, because fishing season is upon us!
Love the beachy feel of this update. Coating and repairing it with resin and fiberglass will keep it as strong as it ever was.
We were both so happy to breath some life into this one Leanna! It has held up very well and I’m sure once he takes it into the boat it will be just fine.
You definitely achieved the beachy, rustic look, Mary! The resin is so cool and a great tip. Thanks for sharing at Funtastic Friday!
Thank you Angie. It is still going strong after 2 years and the hubs hasn’t asked for it …yet!
What a cool repair! That fiberglass stuff works great. We’ve used it on an old canoe we had…fixed it up just fine. I love your finishing touches!
I think this was such a great idea to repair it before we turned it into decor. Now we have gotten two for the price of one.
Very clever!
Thank you Sarah! It was a fun fix!
Oh I love it!!! what a great upcycling project xx
And I still have it on the wall!
What a great thing to work on together. It’s a clever idea to use this as a decoration until it’s needed on the boat
It’s been a year now and he still hasn’t needed it so I have it hanging on the wall. A win for me!!
From trash to treasure, it looks fabulous!
Thanks so much Carol I love all that storage.

You achieved the rustic/beachy feel. Too cute. Your hubby and you make a great DIY team … and he can use it on his boat — if he can get it away from you now!!!!! Have a lovely week.
Great save for the lost little lifesaver! You did a great job decorating it, and it would look so pretty out by my pool. Hint Hint, LOL When your hubby borrows it all the other boaters will be jealous because he will have the prettiest lifesaver around.
Yup, it turned out great! I have one that I bought at a vintage store a couple years ago. I loved it as is. I use it for summer décor. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann

Thanks Wendi! I t hought you would like this one. I hung it up in the hallway and the hubs in eyeing it from now! 😉 You’ll have to send me a pic of the anchor .. I have a few of those too!

Tara, you are so funny… as if I expected to find one. We usually find other unmentionables that wash up on the shore. This was an unexpected treasure. Thanks for stopping by.
LOL! The title is so funny and the project super! I want to save a lifesaver too! This looks really cool!
Imagine that, we actually found it on the beach washed up. It’s a good think my husband knew how to save it.
