Today is …you guessed it … a rainy day.  And on rainy days there is nothing better than throwing some logs into the fireplace.

Rainy cloudy day - the boondocks blog
But where do we store all these logs?  I had an old basket that I used to store my logs in, next to the fireplace, however after a while it fell apart. Now I went searching for an alternative and I found an old container, I believe it was used as a wash tub 50 years ago. However it was in pretty bad shape. So it had to be cleaned up

I washed it, sanded it down and decided to stain it a walnut color.

After 2 coats of stain, it was well protected and it looked gorgeous, despite the many scratches and imperfections.

A much better storage solution than an old basket, don’t  you agree? That  old wash tub cleaned up pretty well!  Next step is to work on that fireplace!!

Jas, it is very sturdy and that’s what I was looking for really. Baskets would not hold the wood, and I didn’t want to put metal containers there.

it looks great Mary – quite different to what I expected when I read that you were using a wash tub (I was thinking of those metal ones!)

Leanne I found this at the farm under a pile of dirt. It was big and sturdy and those were the requirements. Now that it’s all cleaned up and pretty I can keep it at home and store the wood. Wood is much warmer than metal… but you never know.

Agreed! It looks beautiful and is perfect for logs Mary! The natural stain brings out the imperfections of the wood, which I really like!

I actually chanced upon the stain. I’m really happy with the way it turned out and now it sits next to my fireplace which I use a lot in the winter. It’s not cold but there is a lot of humidity in the air that cuts to the bones.

What a fabulous find and it cleaned up nicely. The dents just make it all the more interesting. I think you found the perfect use for it too.

I agree, when I found it it was covered in mud. There was no way I could have seen the beautiful waves of the wood underneath. Now it proudly sits next to my fireplace.
