Sharing is caring!
At the farm, we have a few of these barrels lying around. I believe in days gone by these were used for storing olive oil. They may also have been used for storing rain water… before they rusted.
Today I am going to show you how I revamped the olive oil barrels.
When we first moved to Greece, I found a few in the basement. I dragged them upstairs to the balcony. Even back then I was repurposing without actually knowing the word for the activity!
My thinking was they are big, and they are for storage, so why not use them as such. But the exterior left much to be desired.
So I painted them using whatever I had in the house at the time.
Here is another one that has seen better days. I had let the kids paint this one.
It needs all the help it can get.
The first step was to paint it a neutral grey color.
I traced a fleur de Lis onto the sides and on the top of the barrel using a sharpie.
Then I added some flourish to it, and painted the rings white.
And here is my revamped barrel. It can be used for storage but also as an end table.

And so that is how I revamped the olive oil barrels. As of now I have these 2 on my balcony, but you never know what else I might come up with. The grey one was painted by my older daughter (thanks kid!! ) It was a messy job, but well worth it. Now the other one with the flowers just got a touch up. What do you think, should I keep it like that or transform it into something more sophisticated?
;

What a great idea Mary - I love the grey one - understated and a little bit funky. You are so clever with all the things you revamp and bring back to life x

Leanne it's either upcycle them or throw them away, and you know I can't bear to do that. Thanks for the visit.

I love the different styles of decoration that you painted on your olive oil barrels. They make great little side tables for porch, patio, or lawn.

They are big and sturdy. Carol my balcony is very windy so these really stand up to all the blowing.

I saw your link at the Over The Moon party and thought I'd seen all your posts but apparently this must've been before I discovered your blog. What a great idea to paint old olive barrels and use them as side tables on your balcony - so pretty! Now I can only imagine you hauling this up from your basement, grunting and groaning the whole way up. What us DIYers will do for a project. Pinned :)

Yep Marie, I was a lot slimmer back then. I actually used to do projects instead of sit in front of the computer all day. Lol!
