Wrapping Up the Wire Dish Rack

Sharing is caring!

Today I am going to share a quick  piece I made from an old dish rack that had rusted up and I was ready to throw  out… but as usual inspiration struck!

I grabbed that old wire rack and took it  with me on my way to the farm.  This is where I do most of my painting, and of course I forgot to take a “before” picture.  So I have found a stock photo from Google (thank God for Google) to show you what it looked like before, just imagine it with lots of rust!

I painted it with a black rust proof spray paint, and as I was running out I did not do the best job, but I believe that is part of the charm.  Here is what it looked like after the paint.

What to do next??  If any of you have been following me recently, you know that I have been in a wrapping frenzy.  And I had vowed to not do this any time soon… So what do I go ahead and do?  Wrap!!   Of course, it was much less painful this time around.

I wrapped the twine all around the top part of the wire rack.  And that was it.  I think it gives it a nice rustic feel without being heavy handed.  And like I said before, I was not perfect with the black paint so it has an old world charm.

I tied the twine on the side and added a blackboard label that I had purchased from Micheal’s.

And after I finished it I decided to use it as a file holder.

  4. Florence says:

What an innovative idea…Mary, you amaze me with the things you come up with that are so simple! Sometimes I find myself thinking…what would Mary do with this? So you are an inspiration, my friend.

  5. Cindy says:

I was READY to see what you had came up with on this dish drainer project! Love it! You’ve got my head to spinning now on different things. I thought; such a neat idea to fancy it up as you did with dishes and actually have dishes in it for a party. Oh the idea! Thanks for sharing. Pinning this one my friend. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

    • Mary says:

Cindy thank you for the pin. And yes you are absolutely right, we can use it for it’s original purpose but all gussied up!

  12. Carol Cook says:

    What a fun repurposing project.

  13. I really like this idea to repurpose an old dish rack, Mary! Like several folks mentioned above, I am amazed at all the ideas you come up with using simple items found in anyone’s home. Love this repurposed rack because it can hold really large legal size folders! When we were in our house, I seemed to always have kids’ school photo packets from the school photographers in a stack that were too big to fit in a file drawer. Large legal size flatlay envelopes would fit good in there and be tidy, too. I do get a bit crazy with untidy! Papers drive me crazy… 😉 Thank you for a very inspiring idea ~ of course I pinned and will schedule for later, too! 😀

  14. Kim says:

This is awesome, Mary! I love the combination of the black and the twine. Elegant and rustic!

  15. Cristina says:

This looks so good Mary. You did an amazing job, so creative!

  16. I love twine too! It’s always nice to know there’s someone else out there who shares the same quirky ‘loves’. I have been known to use it to cover jars (time consuming!) but I love your ideas, as always Mary.

    Mary,
    What a great repurposing idea!!

  20. Mary, this is soooooo clever! I’m in LOVE with this and want to collect a few myself for this very reason! Featuring you this weekend on Party Junk. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Hi Donna, I’ve been a fan for a while now, so happy to have you visiting me. I am honored that you are featuring my little “throw away”. Thanks so much!

  21. Great idea, now I know what to grap from a discarded dish machine.

    • Mary says:

Thanks Fabiola, This one was done at the last minute, because I did not have anyting to upload for a post, and yet, it has proved to be a treausre for me – it is so functional!

  22. Anastasia says:

    This is beautiful!

  23. Julie says:

You know what, i would never look at an old dish rack and think with a lick of paint and a little twine this would make a good file holder. You really do have a knack for seeing things differently!

    • Mary says:

I am still using it and it is so practical but now it’s also pretty. Thank you Julie!

  24. I love it Mary! You are a genius, you are always coming up with some kind of awesome repurpose project. I like how you added that rhyme around the top, and the cute chalkboard tag. This so neat I could sure use one of these in my craft room.

    • Mary says:

I find that sometimes simple is best Linda. As in this case. It has held up remarkably well and I’m still using it.

  25. penny grieco says:

it may be “simple,” but i love it…i just happen to have extra dish drainers…one black, one red, one bronze, and one white! i switch off according to my mood….the bronze one i am using as a plate rack and i really love it!!! you have given me a great idea and inspiration…thanks for sharing..

    • Mary says:

Lucky you I wish I had some extra dish drainers. I love the way it holds all of my files and paint supplies as well.
