A Box as Art - Ένα κουτί ως Τέχνη

Hi everyone.  I was visiting my sons a few months back, and they being bachelors…

Hi everyone.  I was visiting my sons a few months back, and they being bachelors needed some work in their apartment.  There was very little in the way of artwork on the walls. And of course we wanted to correct this frugally. We had gone shopping and bought some furniture and had left over boxes.

I figured if I covered the box with some fabric and stapled the fabric to the back I could then add some ribbon and make some type of abstract design.

This was the result but I was not happy  with it.  The ribbon kept on sliding off and it was too dull.

I removed the slouchy ribbon and went on a ribbon hunt around the house  until I found some ribbon pieces that had more pizzazz.  Here is what it looks like now.

I think it looks much better now, the thick, dark ribbon makes it stand out more.  And there is more balance to the composition.  Plus, it is in the boys’ favorite colors (we cannot neglect the occupants of the apartment !).

To sum it up, this project cost me nothing.  The  fabric, ribbons and  box were available at home.  And all I used to assemble it was a stapler.  I hope this can be inspirational for you.  Let me know what you think.

  3. Wow!! Mary, this is awesome!!! What a fantastic way to add texture and lines to the room and it was done for free…that’s always the best!! It looks great!! Great idea!! 🙂

    1. Keri, you know I love free, or it’s cousin, shopping at home. It’s always fun to look around and find things that can be re used.

  4. Mary, I always look forward to your posts because you amaze me! This is the kind of project I like most, take everything you have on hand and transform it in something beautiful at no cost. No wonder they are happy with it!

    1. Pili, don’t we all love projects that don’t cost anything. And no one needs to know how we did it, we can say it’s an expensive piece from an Art gallery…lol

  5. Ok, I’m going to sound like a broken record, but you amaze me! I know I say it each week, but each project and post you do amazes me in a different way! Boys, older boys-young men are so hard to decorate for! They are at an inbetween stage and you can’t make it so stylish that it’s girly, but it can also become little boy like too. This is perfect, and it cost nothing. My favorite kind of transformation!!!

    1. “It cost nothing” Those are the magic words Nikki! My guys are really happy with it, in fact it’s been over a year now and it’s still up!

  6. What a clever and cheap decor idea – Thanks for linking up to Pin Worthy Wednesday, I have pinned your post to the Pin Worthy Wednesday Pinterest Board.

  7. I did something very similar to this when I bought my first house. I had very little budget but managed to make two quite eye-catching pieces that were unique to me.
The dark ribbon definitely works better!
