A Display for Christmas Cards and Ornaments

Sharing is caring!

There is just something so special about Christmas cards. I know we don’t get very many anymore in the digital age. But when we do we need to have somewhere to display them.  That’s why today I am going to show you a super easy Display for Christmas Cards and Ornaments.

I had this piece of wood that I had previously used as a Halloween decoration but I also wanted to reuse it for Christmas.  After all, for anything to survive in my home, it has to be multi-functional. I had painted this piece of wood using chalkboard paint and curated it by covering it with chalk.  You can see a tutorial of that process here when I did my holiday signs.

While cruising in blog land I spotted this idea from Shanty2Chic.  It was a piece of wood with jute wrapped around and used as a Christmas Card Holder.  As soon as I saw this I knew I could do it using my Halloween board. Of course the ladies of Shanty2Chic built theirs from scratch and did an amazing job at that.  But you know me, I like to be lazy and reuse my stuff.

I had wrapped twine around the top and bottom of the board and just cleaned it up a bit to get rid of the fake blood and spookiness.

Boy I really exhausted myself.  The next step was to attach my homemade ornaments.  I used ribbon for that.

These are also very easy to make and can be done with any fabric scraps you may have.

The possibilities are endless!

I then added a few Christmas cards.

I told you it was super easy.  This board is about 4 feet tall but you can make it with any sort of wood you have lying around.  And you can paint the wood any color at all or leave it natural. I chose to leave it this way because I like to reuse my chalkboard so that for the next Holiday I can change it up by writing on it.

And speaking of chalkboard, I have this wall next to the front entrance.  I dressed it up for Christmas.

I’m slowly getting there. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

I do believe that was the easiest project I’ve ever done. And it makes quite a statement. As I’ve said before, and it may be the motto of my blog by now, reuse and repurpose what you have at home.  All you really need is a bit of creativity and some craft supplies which you can get below and you have yourself a project that can be used all year long.

I hope you enjoyed my display for Christmas cards and ornaments.  Do you have a special place where you display your cards for the Holidays?

Mary, your ornament and cardholder is such a clever idea and I love it next to your chalkboard wall. So festive!!

  3. Debbie says:

Hi Mary, as you said we don’t get many cards anymore and sadly we probably receive most of ours after Christmas. We can go weeks without seeing our postman, the poor chap has so much to do!
However I do like your creation for displaying cards on. No only is it festive, but it holds the cards securely…. I love the chalk board wall. Perfect for those reminders!

  4. Michele says:

I love your card display! i adore chirstmas cards and still get a quite a few, especially ones with family photos and i love to display them. I often hand them on pretty ribbons or around a garland over a door frame.

  5. Lynn Spencer says:

Hey there Mary! I love that you were able to use the Halloween decoration boards for your Christmas cards! Talk about multi-functional! And I do so love receiving Christmas cards in the mail, those digital versions just don’t have the same efffect.
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas.
    Hugs, Lynn

  6. Leanna says:

Hi Mary: I like the idea of having flat Christmas ornaments on your card board. That way its pretty, if you get more cards they can replace the ornaments, but if you don’t receive very many your board is still pretty and your cards are joyfully displayed.
    Thanks for the idea. Leanna

  7. Carol says:

I always loved Christmas cards. Now I get a couple, I miss cards. Cute idea!

  8. Mary,
This is such a good idea. I agree, Christmas cards are so special in this digital age. I need something like this!
    Much Love,
    Erica

This is such a wonderful idea for displaying cards Mary

  10. I was just writing about the same thing. Since people don’t send out cards anymore. When I get one they have so much more meaning knowing that someone took the time to write a special note in their own writing. I think you have created a beautiful way to display them.

  12. I love chalkboard paint! You can use the decor over and over and change it up for the next holiday. I really like how the Christmas cards look displayed with your homemade ornaments, very festive. I need you to come over and decorate my chalkboard! I think it still displays February of last year! UG! Help!

  13. What a cute idea, Mary! Isn’t it a shame how folks don’t send Christmas cards anymore … I use to love receiving them … they put a warm touch to the holiday xo

  14. Pat says:

A very nice idea, Mary! Your wreaths add a nice amount of color too!

  15. This is such a fab idea, Mary, and I love the way it looks.

Mary, this is a wondeful way to display Christmas cards and ornaments!! Not only functional but beautiful as well. The chalkboard behind the door looks lovely as well with the Christmas tree.

  17. Katrin says:

Mary I love wooden boards because you can really do anything with them, over and over! Your board looked fun for Halloween, but you’re right, it’s time to give it some Holiday vibe and I love the idea of displaying Christmas cards and ornaments on it!! Your ornaments are so cute too!!

  18. Very nice. What a good idea to display your cards like that. I also like how you put it next to the pretty Christmas tree you drew. It is beginning to look like Christmas. And the best part is you will be able to reuse the chalk board after Christmas.

  19. Maria Brittis says:

I just love all your DIYs they have so much charm my charming lady, this is a great idea for cards, i have a bunch of wood I could do something like this.

  20. Michelle says:

I can’t remember when last we got a Christmas card. Either or postal services are worse than I thought or the digital age has really taken over, LOL. Your display is lovely enough to make me want to rush out and buy a few cards just so I can display them like you did Mary. Your home is really starting to look all Christmas-sy. Will you be doing another video tour?

  21. Christmas cards! ARGH!!!
Thank you, Mary! I completely forgot Christmas cards. Luckily enough there’s still plenty of time left to send them on their way. Lovely display, but I’ll go for a string this year again…
    Have a lovely day,
    Marjan

  22. Florence says:

Clever repurpose Mary! Love both projects…very colorful! And I like how you reuse from season to season….I don’t see any blood…LOL.

  23. What a great idea Mary! Your card display is lovely, and I love how you attached your homemade wreaths to the board. Makes it even that much more festive.
You are not lazy at all, you are thrifty and have a very creative mind and a endless supply of goodies in your basement. LOL.
If I got more Christmas cards I would make me one of these board., but I may get two a year.

  24. Kim says:

What a fun way to display your cards!

  25. We used to get and send so many cards, but you’re right…the digital age has changed that significantly. Nonetheless, I love this project! It can be adapted for other things too, like a place to display other items besides cards. Boards are so versatile!

  26. Pamela List says:

super cute idea! I used to make homemade cards every year, but I fell into parenting, the second surprise time an my energy levels plummeted having a teen and a baby. But I sure do miss it. Another thing to display would be artist trading cards!

  27. This is very nice Mary! I love the way the black background make the ornaments pop!
