Here in my costal town in the boondocks, we have blue waters, lots of olive trees but not much in the way of traditional Fall decor. So it was with great sadness that I emerged from our local “Euro Store” with a measly bunch of fake squashy looking sort of things. I want to celebrate Fall but the powers that be are conspiring against me. The squash came attached to fake leaves on a vine-like rope. I removed them and painted them. I was also lucky enough to find some real squash at the local supermarket and so this is my contribution to the Fall decor.
You may recall that on my last post I showed you this drawer which was repurposed into a tray and it had the backgammon design. This was used for the vignette.
I used items found in nature such as pine cones, dry leaves and of course the pumpkins, and only added the fake white mini-squash to offset the darker colors.
The gold garlands were added for some extra bling.

I’ve faked a fall vignette and it now sits proudly displayed on my coffee table. Because let’s face it, unless I go hiking up to the mountains I will not be finding any Fall here on the coast. I do believe I did a pretty good job of it. Do you agree with me?
Αυτή η βινιέτα τώρα κάθεται περήφανα στο τραπεζάκι του σαλονιού. Διότι ας το παραδεχτούμε, αν δεν πάω καμιά βόλτα στα βουνά δεν θα βρω το Φθινόπωρο εδώ στην ακτή. Πιστεύω πως έκανα μια αρκετά καλή δουλειά. Εσείς συμφωνείτε μαζί μου ;

Your Fall vignette is so very pretty and rustic! I love that you use butternut squash as a decorative gourd, paired with the pine cones and gold beads, go perfect for Fall! Thank you for sharing at Oh My Heartsie Girl WW! It would be a pleasure to have you back next week! Pinned and Shared! Have a beautiful weekend!
Thanks so much Christine. Yes, I was able to save the day with those butternut squashes. Nature is good that way, because if we relied only on retail stores, we’d be in trouble… lol
Hi Mary and thank you for leaving me a sweet reply on my Halloween porch. I tried to reply to your comment directly but you came up as a non reply blogger, so I tracked you down here! Your fall display looks sp gorgeous!! Christine from Little Brags
Thanks so much Christine. I may have to switch over to another way of replying. I’m so happy you stopped by to visit. I just love your unique blog with all its little surprises and details.
I need to go out and search for an old drawer!! Such a great idea to turn it into tray!! I love your fall vignette with the pumkins and pinecones!!
Thanks so much. And it is nice to meet you. I believe you may have the same problem as me, scarcity of old things because the greeks are hoarders. At least in my area they are. Looking forward to keeping in touch. I’ll reach out to you on FB.
This is a beautiful. You may call it ‘faking it’ but it looks pretty real to me! Well done!!!!!! ~ Rose
Aww thanks so much Rose. It means a lot to get recognized after all the trouble I had in finding elements for this vignette. So nice to see that we have a growing European community. So you understand me better than my American friends.
I think it looks festive.
Do drop by and say hello!
Blessings,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage
Thanks Laura I was going for a happy look one that did not remind me of the beach and the heat… So I guess your comment confirms that all turned out well. I’ll be dropping by to visit you.
I like it! Good way to use what you have available! Thanks again for sharing at Welcome Home Wednesdays.
Tracy it was such a dilemma. The problems we bloggers create! But in the end nature saved the day because if I had depended on retailing I would have nothing now! See you tomorrow!
Nothing wrong with faking 😉 It looks beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing with us at Thursday Favorite Things blog hop.
Thanks sweet Jas. It is looking pretty good. Soon I’ll be able to add to it and turn it into a Christmas vignette. Time is rushing by too fast for me.
Mary, neutrals and metallic…how can you go wrong? Thanks for sharing at Five Star Frou-Frou. Will you join me again this week? Mimi xxx
Mimi, I’m already there!! Have a glass of wine ready for me! xoxo
I love all of the texture that this brings! Thanks for sharing at Your Inspired Design.
Thank you Holly for stopping over. I had almost given up on this thing but as fate would have it I was able to find all the right elements at home to make it come together. Who needs retail when you can shop at home or in nature.
Simple,lovely,elegant! Perfect!
Suzie thank you so much. I feel that the best projects are the ones that happen at the last minute.
Mary, you can put together something with nothing better than anyone I’ve ever met! You have the touch. This is a fall decor to be very proud of. But, if it could happen I would trade you a bit of time here for there! LOL Our trees are all colors and pumpkins at every porch. But it’s chilly at night and I’m sure it’s much warmer there. And after you showed the images of your home, I think I’ll let you have a bit of my fall if I can have a bit of your beach!
Nikki, it’s a deal! I will send you some of my sun and you will send me some leaves. Oh and the leaves you see above had washed up from the sea. I found it quite amazing, as if they washed up just for me. BBtw, I checked on my comment replies and it seems they go to your e-mail individually not as a group.
Beautiful ideasI I really love the pine cones. Thanks for sharing the pretty link up (and for linking up with The Alder Collective!) See you next Tuesday!
Thanks Kelsie, sometimes it’s easier than we make it to be.
You fake fall so very well. I love the natural elements in this display and that pitcher is perfect here.
Yes Sarah, after I came out of the dollar store, I got mad and I decided to take matters into my own hands and not let the powers that be defeat me !
I love the piece. At first I thought you could use some orange but when I looked at all the pics I realized the reason I like it so much is that it has only the smallest hint of Orange on the squash. There’s so much orange everywhere else you turn that this piece becomes a breath of subtle fresh air.
Well done!
Karen, that is exactly what I was going for. I have the tray which is full on brown and heavy color so I wanted to lighten it up a bit. You can see that the table is a rich brown color as well , too much brown in my opinion. Maybe I’ll paint that table next. What do you think?
This is so very beautiful!! Thanks for sharing at the DIY Crush Craft Party on Thursdays!
Thank you Denise for your sweet words. I almost didn’t make this from my frustration with the lack of fall objects, but where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Just letting you know that you beautiful fall vignette setting got featured at my craft party!! Hope you will stop by again to link up your latest DIY!
Denise I am thrilled that my fake little vignette was featured. You know it almost didn’t get done. I had such a hard time finding all the right elements. Thanks for dropping by I really appreciate it.
I love it Mary! It looks fantastically fall. Great job usuing what you had available. I especially like the use of the clear pitcher to hold some things vertically!
🙂 gwingal
That pitcher is really great for displaying things Nikki. I never use it for putting beverages in anyway so might as well use it as a decorating piece.
This isn’t faking it at all Mary, it’s very pretty. You’ve used seasonal elements and the painted tray is the perfect vessel. Thank you for sharing with us at Celebrate Your Story, and have a great weekend.
Thank you Sandra living in the land of the eternal sun has its drawbacks.
I definitely agree Mary! You did a wonderful job faking your fall vignette. I Love how it turned out. It speaks fall to Me! 😊
Yay!! That’s what I wanted to hear Linda!!
Your vignette looks wonderful Mary. My favourite part is the gold coloured pinecones. Our climates couldn’t be more different sigh lol
That is so true Leanna. I am still in the troughs of ninety degree weather and pining for fall and cooler air.
I think you did a great job Mary! Love how it came together. Here, we have an over abundance of fall décor in the stores. It’s unreal!! With this you can enjoy it as décor for a while and then enjoy the yummy squash for dinner. 🙂 Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Thanks Jann. It is always such a challenge to come up with Halloween and Fall decor here. Our temps go from summer to a paltry winter with just rain. So it is not at all fall inspiring.
It may be fake Mary but you still have made it look fabulous as usual 🙂
Thank you so much Amber. I love fall and it would be a shame to deny myself this little pleasure.
What a lovely Fall display! I love the glitz that the gold beads give it!!
Hugs,
Deb
I too thought the gold beads were a nice touch!
It’s a fine fall vignette, but I can only imagine the struggles to find fall items from your local!
The struggle is real Laurie. I just went to the dollar store yesterday to find something for our upcoming project and there was nothing remotely fall like.
I love your fall vignette! I love decorating with pine cones!
Me too T’onna, They remind me of cool weather and cozy evenings by the fireplace. Thanks for stopping by.
I love this display!! And you make me laugh… “bling”… “squashy looking things”… you’re awesome. 🙂
Thanks Sarah… what would you call them? They don’t look like the classic pumpkins. Thanks for your sweet comment.
Well, I’d say you did pretty good with what you had. I recognize that butternut squash right off because I’m harvesting those right and left from our little summer garden this year. In fact, that’s the main thing that grew well. So I have a lot of those & I was just wondering the other day if I could do something “Fall-ish” with them. Glad to see you accomplished it.
I love those squashes, they sell them in the German store. They also make great shapes for ghosts if you are in the Halloween mood.
I love this display. Fall is my favorite time of year, and this post is a great inspiration for me to start making some center pieces. Thanks for sharing on Sunday’s Best.
Mine too Rhonda. There is nothing like a cool breeze and those autumn colors.
Hi Mary,
You’ve made a lovely fall vignette, here. 🙂 The colors and textures work nicely together, and the tray itself is just so pretty. Well done!
Catherine
Thank you Catherine. Considering there is no hint of fall till December in my area I am happy with how it turned out.
You did a great job with limited resources!
I just want a real fall, none of this fakery!!
Looks great. I’m so sad that you don’t have much fall in your neck of the woods! You did a great job with this tray. The contrast of dark wood/colors and white is so pretty!
Thanks so much Sara… It is 4 am where I am now… lol. I was so excited I had to stay up!
hi mary! this is beautiful! love the metallic colors mixed with the browns and tans! definitely full of fall charm! =)
Thanks Ananda. I almost didn’t finish this project because of my frustration with those little squash.
I agree Mary, you did a wonderful job there!! Living at the coast too, I really understand how difficult is to find fall elements.
By the way, I love the pinecones, and the ones with white paint are so lovely!
Pili, you are going to see those pinecones again for Christmas, I got them from the woods years ago and have been using them ever since. Sometimes I like to paint them a little.
I love your title!! I love to decorate but certainly not a decorator so I fake it a lot. You on the other hand did an a great job of embracing fall by using fake decor. The tray is a sonderful idea because then you can remove your vignette if needed. Now you have inspired me to create one. Thanks for sharing
Mary, I’m not a decorator either, but I love to tinker with old things. That tray was in very bad shape when I found it. The only think that ticked me off was those awful squash, but I guess everything else helps to offset them. Thanks for stopping by.
it looks lovely – and very tastefully understated – I’ve seen a few that are completely over the top and they make my eyes water just looking at them! Enjoy your piece of Autumn/Fall 🙂
Leanne, thanks. I don’t like over the top, but I needed to fill that giant tray that is why I threw everything in there. Did I mention that I pulled the leaves out of the sea, that’s how desparate I was. lol
What lovely colors and textures. And the tray is the crowning jewel.
Thank you Debra for commenting on my tray. I love that thing, and everybody only talks about the decor. But you need a solid base first.
Hi Mary,
I can totally relate to faking fall, having lived all those autumns on Crete, and in fact, I wrote a post with this exact title, (Faking Fall), two years ago, October 13th, to be exact! You did a great job creating autumnal ambiance, despite the fact that the season has not really arrived in your neck of the woods, and may never do so!
Happy Tuesday!
Poppy
Exactly Poppy, it may never do so.I live on the coast so I have to travel up to the woods to get that real Fall feeling. Now you seem to me to be a bit further up in altitude than me. Do you get snow? We only get it once in 10 years for a few hours. It’s always a pleasure when you visit.
I think you did a great job, I love the neutral colors and the arrangement. Very fall, indeed! 🙂
Thanks Kim. But we won’t tell that all are not real. Thanks for dropping over, did you bring your pumpkin vase? If so, you can leave it here for a while.
I am wondering where you live? We are in Pa. I like your little Fall vignette and am glad you could find something to make this!
Pinky I live across the pond all the way in Greece, but am a New Yorker at heart. So now you see my dilemma. Too much sunshine and beaches. But I crave the New England Fall.
I love it! I know what you mean, same here, there isn’t much Fall like we know it. I found the same gourds here, lol. And the pine cones add a nice fall touch too!
Katrin, I have been hoarding those pinecones for years now. The gourds were horrible, I had to paint over them, and well, they are a little better. Too bad Lidl doesn’t sell Fall decorations. They have beautiful things for Christmas!! 😀
Mary, I love it!! You really did a great job decorating for fall!!
Thanks Keri, It turned out pretty good considering that I live in the land of the seashells. The pinecones were picked when we had gone for a trip to the woods a few years back, and I just fawn over them and cherish them so much.
Love this easy vignette! Looks perfect for fall.
Lindsay it was easy to put together. Tthe hard part came before. All the brain wracking to figure out what to put in the tray.
What great centerpiece!
Thanks so much Pamela.
Everything looks so cute! The ideas are great! 🙂
Thanks for joining Cooking and Crafting with J & J!
Thank you Jess.
What a beautiful fall synthesis!
Thank you Katerina, for all your continued support. May we always be well to enjoy the Seasons.
Hi Mary, I found your link at Share Your Style link up party, and I’m very happy about that because I fell in love with your blog. Love your style and your decor and hope to be a frequent guest here:-)
Greetings:-)
Thank you so much Anita. I appreciate every one of my visitors so much and your sweet words are much appreciated. I also looked at your wonderful blog, so much inspiration. Do you have a facebook page That is where I usually follow bloggers, if not we will find another way.
So pretty, Mary! I just love using nature in decor. Thanks so much for sharing with us @Vintage Charm!
Cecilia, we won’t tell that some is fake… 😉
You created the fall sphere and that’s really cool. I love the setting.
Thanks for sharing the tip on #tiptuesday.
Thanks Debbie. And remember I don’t live in a Fall happy area! But I had to fight with the sea to get those leaves.
Mary, I love your display…it is rustic and pretty and looks like fall to me! I love pine cones and the beads make it look so pretty.
Mary, being new here…do you live in Greece?
Have a wonderful Friday!
Hugs, Kimberley
Yes Kimberly, I live in Greece, but I grew up in New York. So I have this 2 country thing going on. That’s why I was complaining about not really having fall. I live by the coast and the trees are stubborn and don’t change color. Thanks for visiting.
Hi Mary,
That’s what I thought, but I did remember you mentioning New York before.
I bet it is so beautiful there, even if the trees are stubborn!
Enjoy your weekend! 🙂
Kimberley
Pretty. That’s a great way to bring a bit of the outdoors and fall colors into the house. I love the bit of silver in among all the natural elements. Thanks for sharing with us at the #HomeMattersParty link party
Thank you Alayna. Fall is my favorite season so I cannot be left wanting. Thanks for visiting..
Mary, this is so beautiful! I can’t imagine a land with no fall but you sure pulled it off like a champ! I love the mix of rustic and elegance… those beads are a gorgeous addition.
So glad you joined the blog hop!
Donna it all came together because of all your hard work and perseverance. Thanks so much for your compliment, it always means so much coming from the Queen of repurposing. I am also very happy to be a part of this amazing community.
So pretty! The gourds make the pine cones pop! Pinned to my Fall Pinterest BoardThanks for linking up to Merry Monday ! Have a great week!
Kim
Thank you Kim. Thanks for pinning it and for sharing in the blog hop! You also have a great week.
Your centerpiece looks great and ready for fall.
Bev
Thanks Beverly, Fall is ready, now to take care of Halloween.
How beautiful is your fall vignette. I love all natural looking items to use during this time of year. Just lovely
Vanessa thanks so much. The squashes really had me peeved. But I think those pinecones saved the day.
I like the different textures of the acorns and gourds with the shiny beads and glass. And I love the color scheme, too.
Yes, it all came together at the last minute. Those gourds had me peeved, and then I rescued some leaved from the sea. The pinecones were from past Chistmas projects. It’s a small miracle that I was able to end up with a cohesive piece on this one.
Mary-I didn’t notice anything fake until you said so :). This arrangement is so pretty, and I especially love the (neutral) variations in color. Way to bring some fall to your Mediterranean world!
Nicki, I’m delighted to hear that. I even had to fish the leaves out of the beach because the leaf colors have just started turning here. But most of the trees don’t turn into Autumn colors they just stay green. It’s kind of boring.
Very pretty!
Thanks so much Jill. I was so happy and excited to be a part of this community and with such a great bunch of talented bloggers.
You did a great job working with what you had, I think it’s a beautiful fall arrangement!
Thanks so much Jennifer. I just popped on over to your blog and was so happy to see the fall landscape in all it’s glory. Thanks for dropping by and I will make a poin tof visiting your lovely blog.
