A Nest for My Rustic Eggs – Μια Φωλιά για τα Χωριάτικα  Αυγά

Sharing is caring!

Spring is in the air and Easter is … well, for some of us Easter is almost here.  As for me, Easter will have to wait a bit longer,  specifically the first of May. You can read more about my Easter here.   But that doesn’t mean we can’t decorate our homes in preparation for the holiday.  Today I’m going to show you an easy nest for my rustic eggs  that I’ve made using things from the house and farm.

I’m teaming  up with 8 very talented ladies in the Hoppy Easter blog hop and you can also add your Easter creations below.

The nest started out as a homely wreath. It looked like this …

original wreath, A nest for my rustic eggs - www.theboondocksblog.com
… till about a year ago whenI transformed it to this with some white paint and a cool hedgehog ribbon.

I used a small glass dessert plate.

a glass plate as a base, A nest for my rustic eggs - www.theboondocksblog.com
The wreath was re-painted white after being freed from the hedgehogs.  It was placed on top of the plate.

Adding the wreath on the base, A nest for my rustic eggs www.theboondocksblog.com
I placed some velvet fabric, a left over from a dress (you knew that was coming), inside the wreath.  We’ll pretend that this is the grass inside the nest!

Now for the eggs.  I am pretty much a traditonalist when it comes to eggs, but this year I felt like red would not be the right color for this particular nest.  I bought home these beauties from the farm in all their brown glory and decided I really liked their natural color. So instead of dyeing them, I just added white chalk paint in various shapes and designs – nothing fancy.  And I finished them off with a marker.

I really love the contrast of the white against the natural brown of the eggs.

You can see that the paint on the  wreath also adds lots of rustic goodness.

To be honest I don’t think these lovelies will last till Easter so I may be back next month with some more eggs. Let’s hope my chicken is working hard.

And with that my nest for my rustic eggs is complete.   Nothing fancy and all things you can find at home.  Happy Easter everyone!!

Those are so cool! That is just the sort of Easter decoration that I’d love to have in my home. It’s perfectly rustic and I love the color palette! So beautifully done, Mary! <3

    • Mary says:

Gina I usually paint them red, the traditional color. But nothing is traditional in my home anymore.. haha !

  2. Caroline says:

A perfect nest and such pretty wreaths, lovely ideas for Easter

  3. Every spring, I’m on the lookout for interesting ways to display my decorated eggs. I love your idea about creating a “nest” from a grapevine wreath!

  4. Carol says:

Mary, I love the look of your rustic eggs, with the brown and white designs! And a clever way to make a nest for them!

  5. Julie says:

I really love how your things get multiple makeovers, seeing them transform not once but over and over. This is a really pretty and classy Easter decoration.

    • Mary says:

I hate to buy new things Julie because we never have enough room to store them. This way I have one thing for multiple uses.

  6. Rebecca says:

You are so clever to use a wreath to make a cute easter nest! It looks adorable, and I love how you let the natural brown of the eggs show through the painting.

    • Mary says:

This one evolved on its own Rebecca. The eggs were brown and looked nice with the wreath but needed a little bit of a pop!

  7. marjan says:

Hi Mary, what a lovely nest. The brown eggs are a great touch.

  8. sherry cole says:

I love these eggs because they look so natural with a little decoration. I love your style Mary!!

  9. Kathryn says:

I love the use of brown eggs and can’t believe I’ve never even thought of dyeing eggs other than white. Nicely done and such a unique look.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Kathryn, I’ve only dyed whatever my hen gave to me. I cannot afford to make her angry and have her stop laying eggs! lol

  10. Amy says:

I love your rustic eggs, Mary! Such a nice variation on the usual pastel eggs! Thanks so much for linking up at Best of the Weekend!

    • Mary says:

I got tired of the traditional red and thought the white looked nice with the rustic brown. Thank you Amy!

  11. Debbie says:

Hi Mary, when the children were small we painted eggs for Easter, but now they are older we leave it to my Mum, who loves getting stuck in with the red dye.
Your Easter nest is very subtle and natural looking. I like it and hope your chicken is a prolific layer as Easter is a long way off!
    xx

    • Mary says:

That’s what I did too Deb, always with that red dye that stayed on my hands for days. I am very proud of miss hen. She is now having her 15 minutes of fame!

  12. Mary, there’s something about those eggs that intrigue me. Maybe it’s that they’re out of the ordinary, or maybe it’s that I love neutrals. Whatever it is, I love them!
I see I’ve missed a lot lately. I’ll be home in about 8 days and will be sure to catch up then.

    • Mary says:

We miss you Doreen and now that spring is on the way you can come home. My hen is very happy with what I did with her eggs. She’s becoming a regular diva!

  13. Mary, the rustic eggs are just beautiful! I always love reading about the Greek culture and I love the Easter tradition with the candles. Thank you for sharing with us at Welcome Home Wednesdays!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Ceystal. I discided to be riske and not do the traditional red for Easter, but don’t worry we still have a month before our Easter so I’ll probably do the red. No escaping tradition.

  14. Mary, I love the rustic look that you’ve given these eggs, it looks like a nest you would find in the woods or on a farm, with a decorative twist! It really looks like spring, and I’m waiting on the mama to come sit on the nest!

    • Mary says:

Nikki all I know is that I have one hen at the farm and now she is going to be a super diva with all of this publiciity! Haha. Hopefuly she’ll give me some more eggs to decorate for the real easter which is a month away.

  15. Life Loving says:

Lovely nest and lovely nest. I really like the chalk, something different from the normal painted eggs. Happy Easter to you!
    Sally @ Life Loving

    • Mary says:

That’s exactly what I thought too. SOmething a bit different to match the wreth/nest. Happy Easter Sally!

  16. Trudy says:

I LOVE the naturalness of your display. The chalk paint on top of the natural color is gorgeous and your rustic nest just brings it all together!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Trudy. I was really happy with the outcome of this one and it lasted (because those were real eggs) till Easter!

  17. Amber Harrop says:

What a lovely nest of eggs Mary – I love it

  18. Mary your nest with rustic eggs for Easter decoration is very attractive. We are going to feature your post on the next Blogger’s Pit Stop.

  19. Kathy A says:

When my kids were little, we would start long before Easter blowing out the eggs; we ate scrambled eggs for weeks so the blown out shells lasted for years (or until they got broken; I still have a few!). I swear the egg white helped reinforce the shells! Miss those times. Thanx for giving me some great ideas; I have more grapevines in the yard that need to come down; smaller wreathes for nests may be in my future!

  20. Julie says:

    Such a simple idea, brilliant!

  21. Sinea says:

Oh these eggs are SO pretty! I would be proud to display them on my table 🙂

  22. Beautiful eggs! I was so drawn to the picture…love all things with that natural look. Perfect for spring, we definitely need some here in Virginia, snow storm today! My husband is Greek (Dad came over to US as a child) and we would love to visit one day!

    • Mary says:

We also had a snowstorm Tracey and I am so tired of all this cold. When living in Greece it never got this cold and I really longed for the snow but now that I am here and reality has set it, I am done with it! haha! I would highly recommend you visit one day you will not regret it.

  23. Amy says:

What a fabulous idea! I love how the wreath turned out after you painted it. It looks so realistic! I may have to try something like this myself this season. 🙂

  24. This is so cute! I love how you used the brown eggs! So perfect for Easter and spring! Thank you for sharing at Celebrate It!

  25. Karren says:

Your vintage eggs are really popular I see by the comments! And I am featuring your story on #omhgff this week, pinned to share your story!!

  26. Leanna says:

Your eggs and nest look wonderful Mary. This year I have an idea using brown eggs, but have not started it yet. I love yours, its great how you made them all look different yet cohesive.

  27. This is adorable! Thank you for adding it to #SaturdaySharefest

  28. maria says:

I love the color of the eggs, the touches of white, you created some pretty rustic eggs. I just bought 2 dozen of white eggs, I may water color them.
    Maria

  29. jeanie says:

Your eggs are delightful and such good instructions! Happy Spring! ~jeanie from Marmelade Gypsy

  30. debbie says:

Mary, are the eggs hardboiled? Is that a silly question? I assume they are or they probably would have broke when you were decorating them. Just curious. A very cute idea and I love the white paint on the wreath

    • Mary says:

Yes Debbie they are hardboiled and they lasted quite a while before they started to smell. It was definitely worth it.

  31. That is so smart to turn the wreath into a nest! Love your rustic eggs too.

  32. Michele says:

I haven’t decorated Easter eggs for a quite a few years. I haven’t figured out how to die my brown organic eggs. You have solved that problem! Although would you really keep them out that long? It seems like they would go bad before May!

  33. candy says:

Easy nest to make and love the eggs. Found you on Blogger’s Pit Stop Link Party.

  34. Elise Ho says:

The eggs and nest look great. What a fun decorative idea.

  35. This is great. I have a thing for nests I think because my nest is empty. 🙁 Just two old birds left.

  36. These eggs are so cutely painted, and the nest looks awesome as well!!!

  37. Teresa says:

I truly like the look of these eggs leaving the natural brown and adding the white. Very nice!

  38. Erlene says:

The wreath nest looks lovely filled with your rustic eggs. Thanks for sharing your idea on MM.

  39. Katrin says:

How fun Mary, Thanks for the Blog Hop, I linked up my Easy Easter Nest! Your nest is lovely, I love the rustic wreath you used for it and the natural tone of the eggs paired with the white designs is right up my alley! It looks lovely and very natural and rustic! How nice to have fresh eggs from your own hen!

    • Mary says:

Katrin about those eggs, I should have done them the way you mentioned to me later on. Now I can only hope they don’t stink up before too long. I boiled them and then painted them. But we must make sacrifices for our blogs.

  40. Mary what a cute nest and eggs! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm and also for hosting the Easter hop!

  41. Ilka says:

Mary – your Easter nest has such a great rustic natural appeal! You did a great job!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Ilka. I am slowly but surely moving in the farmhouse rustic direction, and I guess it’s only fitting since we do have a farm.

  42. Angela Boone says:

These eggs look great. Thanks for sharing at The Creative Circle.

  43. love your eggs – you know I love color but the white/tan look great together, these rustic eggs do not need anything else. I am sure they appreciate the cool nest you made 🙂 thanks for inspiring us today!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Millie! I just need to put a label out that says “for display purposes only” so no one will eat my chalk paint! lol

  44. How darling! I love your little Easter nest and the painted eggs are the perfect rustic touch. I always admire how well you pull things together in natural way that works so well:) Pinning my friend!

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Wendi! I wanted to try something different this year instead of the usual red eggs and it is a refreshing change.

  45. Thank you for stopping by to share this fun Easter project on Friday Features this week. Have a great weekend!

  46. Your spring nest turned out lovely! I like the browns and how you add some white to them. I would think since you boiled them they should be ok for a while. I haven’t even started on spring, I had been working on St. Patrick”s Day. I sure need to get it together (-;

    • Mary says:

The funny thing Linda is that my Easter is in May, so I am way too early with all this, but you have to make sacrifices for your art 😉 lol I don’t have to worry about St Patrick’s here in Greece we have the carnival to finish with.

  47. Celeste says:

I love the idea of using a grapevine wreath for a nest! And your painted eggs look so perfect in it! You are very lucky to have fresh eggs. This is perfect for spring and Easter!

    • Mary says:

Yes, it came together wonderfully at the last minute Celeste. Although my hen is a bit finicky about laying her eggs.

  48. Thank you for the party invite. I love the way you did the eggs. They are so sophisticated looking. The whole presentation is spot on.

    • Mary says:

Thanks so much Debra. Now at some point I’ll have to make some more eggs because I don’t think these will survive till May.

  49. Krista says:

I really like how the eggs turned out. They look awesome! I really have to get some chalk paint. But…I am wondering if you hard boiled them first? I am just curious. You have a chicken?!!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Krista. I have one chicken at the farm and she lays her eggs wherever she pleases. A diva! I did hard boil them but I’m not sure if it would be a good idea to eat them. I celebrate Easter May 1st so I’ll be making another batch till then. These are for display purposes only..lol

  50. What a great idea to paint your natural eggs! Love the contrast of white and brown for a nice new easterly look!!!

    • Mary says:

That’s exatly what prompted me to paint them Gail, the contrast of the white against the brown. A new look for me because I usually go with red.

  51. My eggs last year were a complete blue disaster so I don’t have a link to be proud of! This year I guess with all this inspiration I’ll do a better job!

    • Mary says:

As long as we don’t eat them we can experiment to our hearts content. This is the first year I’m stepping away from the traditional red. I s hould have a label that says “for blogging purposes only” lol

  52. Love your embellished brown Easter Eggs Mary! Your photography is stunning in this post – LOVE.

  53. Keri says:

Mary, I love these natural colored eggs!! The brown and white look so wonderful together!! Your designs are really cool too!! Yes, let’s hope your chicken gives you lots more eggs!! 🙂

  54. What a cute Easter nest idea!!! I just love the natural tones! Happy Easter to you and your family! 🙂

  55. Pili says:

Mary, your nest is so lovely. I really like you kept most of the real color of the egg, and the white paint makes it pop and it’s a great combination together.
Don’t push your hen too hard, she’s done a wonderful job.

    • Mary says:

That’s what I like about it Pili. The combination of the brown with the white. I guess I have to thank Mrs. Hen for her beautiful brown eggs.

  56. Using a wreath was so smart! I had no idea your nest was a former wreath until I looked further. The way you painted the eggs is so cute too. I really like the color palette. Happy Easter!

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Jess. It was a very easy project all that it needed was a different way of looking at the wreath.

  57. Beverly says:

Mary, this is so cute! I love that you reused an old wreath for the nest. The colors are perfect for a rustic Easter decor piece. Pinned and Tweeted. Thank you for sharing at Snickerdoodle Sunday!

  58. Megin says:

These are beautiful! I love the brown and white ~ stunning!
Thank you for sharing this week at Brag About It link party on VMG206 (Mondays at Midnight).
    ~ Megin of VMG206

  59. Brianna says:

I would never have thought to make a nest out of the wreath! I see those all the time at thrift stores, I’ll have to pick one up and transform it!

  60. Maarit Aho says:

    Your eggs looks wonderful!

  61. Renee says:

This is one of the best nests I have seen. I love, love, love the rustic look 🙂 Thanks for posting at Over The Moon!

  62. Eleana says:

    • Mary says:

  63. Laurie says:

Mary, Your Easter Egg display is wonderful! I love that you used things that you have at home right down to the piece of green velvet! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Snickerdoodle Sunday!
    ~Laurie

  64. Melissa says:

Using small twiggy wreaths as nests is a great idea! Using brown eggs with white decorations is the perfect touch. Happy Easter!

  65. Your nest is truly the best! This post was truly a joy to read and I hope that you will continue adding your ray of sunshine every week on Thoughts of Home on Thursdays.

    • Mary says:

Thank you for your kind words Laura. It seems that the projects that are done at the last minute turn out the best sometimes.

  66. What a cute idea! I love how you re-used so many other items. Thanks for linking up to The Creative Circle. See you this Thursday!

  67. Charlene says:

Great post. These are super cute eggs. Simple but lovely

  68. Clever idea for a nest, Mary, and it looks so lovely with your brown and white decorated eggs (love them!). Thanks for linking them up at Vintage Charm 🙂
