Fast forward to here, where I have cured the blackboard paint with chalk. I have also done this in my blackboard wall here, to give you a better idea.
Those rackets are useful again and I have banished the Barbie! And that is my second contribution to the Christmas in July blog hop. You can also check out our monthly Handmade for Christmas series, where we make a gift each month so that by December we will have 12 Christmas gifts and not need to scramble around.

Such a cool idea! I love crafts that involve chalkboard paint! And I love the star and Christmas tree chalk drawings!
Thanks Monroe, they are so versatile and loads of fun!
What a cute idea! So original and a lovely way to repurpose those childhood toys! But I wish you had kept the book intact for your future grandbabies. It’s a classic!
Aww, Gail sadly the book was in tatters. We had gotten much use out of it after 4 kids. I had it taped at the sides as you can see. I’ll find another one for the future grandkids. Thanks.
Mmmm Mary, now you got me inspired, I really like the paddle chalkboard idea! You can use it all year round as well, how fun! And Barbie, oh Barbie, her days are over, lol! Well, in my house there are still some left….but not too many.. You came up with a fun and easy decoration for the holidays or any day that is!
I really like to do holiday things that can be used all year round if possible. As for Barbie, enjoy her while you can. I may even have a few hidden somewhere.
What a fun idea Mary. I love that they can be used as Christmas decorations and as a chalk board. So much better than pink Barbie paddles.
I totally agree with you there Michelle, Barbie paddles are so over. Actually they have been moved from storage to storage for the past 5 years so it was time for mama to have a go at them.
Mary, how cute! I would never thought to do something like this. You are so creative! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
Thank you Cindy. I am not satisfied with just repurposing something, I need to have it work all year long. Very demanding of me.. lol .
Mary, I love how you repurposed these Barbie paddles!! Giving one side a Christmas look and the other side a chalkboard was so smart!! Another fantastic repurpose to get you more ready for when Christmas arrives!
And to use them any time of the year, because I will not be happy till I can use everything more than once a year. “wink”
What a clever makeover! I love the idea of new drawings throughout the year! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
Tha way you get two for the price of one by using it as a chalkboard.
Brilliant as always, Mary! I would never have guessed those started out as Barbie paddles!
Yes Keri we are banishing the Barbie around here and it is long overdue!
Mary,
Your creativity knows no bounds! This is a cute project and I have no doubt that many little kids do still have stars in their eyes at the mention of crafts! I love it! Pinning to share.
Laurie
Thank you Laurie. Haha. I’ll have to wait for the grandkids now…
Hi Mary, I love it! My favorite side is the chalk board side as you could change the picture each day. And I know exactly where you are coming from about moody teenagers, I’m not sure mine would even humour me now if I asked them to draw something Chrismasy.
xx
Oh Debbie, those teens. If I say a word to them I get a dirty look. They will grow out of it. Some of my best friends are my older kids who are no longer teens … we have something to look forward to.
Who would have thought a barbie paddle could look so good. These are so creative, Mary, and so much fun. What a brilliant transformation.
Kim anything would have been an improvement over the Barbie. Thanks for popping in.
Hi Mary, My sister used to have those paddles lol it brought back a few memories. I think you did a gret job repurposing them. Love it! Thank you for sharing with us at #SimplifyWednesdays! Stumbled, pinned, tweeted, shared
That is so funny. Someone else actually had these things. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the kids play with them, they just took up space. At least now they’ll be used.
How cute Mary! I never would of thought doing that. I like them so much better now then when they were Barbie mirrors. Your creative amazes me!
Thanks Linda. And it was nice to get rid of all that pink too. I don’t think we have any more pink in the house. lol.
I was like hmmm Barbie paddles? well knock me over these paddles are awesome! I love the way you decorated them and then so many options! you could have them hung up really year round, changing out the chalkboard images. Neat lady!
I threw a curve ball at ya! That’s exactly what I intend to do. I have my fish all set for summer!
Mary, I’ve never heard of Barbie paddles before. What were they used for? Also wondering about not using power tools? I’d be lost if I couldn’t use a few. Anyways, you did a fantastic job, as always,in transforming your paddles. Very clever!
Carol they were used for playing ping pong ball. I guess we can call them rackets too. The power tools reference was a joke, to show how easy the project was. A And I am so relieved to finally be done with them. No one played ping pong or racket ball anyway.
Oh my gosh! That upcycled Barbie paddle is great because you can change the theme as the season changes. Glad to have joined!
Exactly. Who wants only Christmas, when we can have any season at all?
This is such a clever idea that I would have never thought of! I will have to remember this one this Christmas.
Sherry, it is always better to get two for one.
Mary, this is such an adorable project and a fantastic repurpose!
Thanks Maya, and I know my girls won’t miss the Barbie paddles.
Mary, you find the best ways to upcycle things! These paddles look wonderful as Christmas decor pieces!
And not just for Christmas Beverly. That’s really what I like about them.
So many great Christmas projects and goodies with Christmas in July! The paddle makeovers are so fun…love the versatility with them–to change them up with different scenes and use all year long! Awesome idea!!!
I think so too Michelle, Christmas decor can be so limiting; this opens things up a bit more.
This is so neat, Mary! I just love the chalkboard paint so you can draw anything you want on them. Such a fun project! You’re so ahead of the game already!
Haha! I wish Celeste. I think that all of the gifts I’ve made so far are being used. I’ll have to make new ones.
Such a fun makeover, Mary.
Amalia
xo
Thanks Amalia, I always try to look for the unexpected.
Great job repurposing something most people would have thrown out. Now, you just have to wait until you have grandkids to again do crafts with little ones!!
Melony I am so looking forward to grandkids. Hopefully in a few years.
This is such a smart and easy to follow DIY! I never would have thought of it! How did you think up something so unique and cool from Barbie paddles, Mary?! You’re so innovative! This would be a great way to spice up my Christmas decorations. Now, I just need to keep my eye out for some of those paddles at the yardsales…
I’m sure you can find these things Gina. So many kids have had them and then discarded them… lol like mine did.
Mary, you really amaze me!! Those paddles look great and they can be used all year round!! I imagine pictures for the different seasons, as well as drawings in the chalkboard side. Love it!
Thank you so much Pili. I love using things all year long and not just for certain holidays. I like to get my junk’s worth.
These turned out fabulous, Mary! Love how you repuropsed the barbie paddles!
Thank you so much for sharing over at Waste Not Wednesday! 🙂
Thank you Sam. Isn’t it great when you can use something more than once and that way have less stuff in the house?
Mary, this is so cool! Barbie is forever banished! LOL You could also hang these on the mantle with the stockings and write the kids names on the chalkboard side so that they know, and Santa knows, which stocking belongs to each child. Or they could hang in the center hole of a Christmas Wreath and you could write a Christmas welcome on them. So many cool things! Great idea!
This was a no brainer for me. As soon as I saw them I said they are for hanging. I really like your idea about hanging them in the center of a Christmas wreath. Now you’ve got me thinking. Thanks Nikki.
I loved them as a summer decoration! You see I am on the beach so Christmas seem to far haha! Anyway I’m sure Barbie wont mind!
I know exactly what you mean. It was quite a stretch for me too to do these projects when all I could think about was the heat and the beach. Haha
That is a great repurposing of the Barbie paddles! I guess kids don’t love Barbie forever… But maybe they will love Christmas forever! (If you aren’t forcing them to chalk out Christmas scenes, that is!). 🙂
Haha. Mandy, I’m sure they’ll grow out of it. One of them is in her moody emo phase right now. I’m sure she’ll snap out of it by the time Christmas rolls around.
Cute paddle! I like the burlap and lace you added to it.
Thanks I had to work hard to get rid of the Barbie!
Mary – I was happy to see that you shared this awesome project for the Holiday Linkup kickoff! I admire your creativity with this project and it’s such a great reminder that using what you have can be so much fun! Happy Holidays!
~Laurie
You know I am on a quest to repurpose everything Laurie!
