From Color to Black and White

Sharing is caring!

Good day to all.  I have been  missing for a while because my blog was being defiant and not opening for me.  Thankfully all that is past now! I have been keeping busy working on my outdoor balcony “privacy” situations.  But I am also  getting ready to redo my daughter’s room.

I am in the process of reorganizing my daughter’s room.  She has a bookcase full of boxes, books and teenage stuff in general.  I had purchased some plastic boxes many years ago, and they turned out to be very sturdy – so sturdy in fact that I still have them 20 years later. Good for me, but not good for the room I am going to place it in.

As I said, I’m slowly transforming the room to make it reflect her favorite colors and personality.  She loves blue and also is a fan of black and white.  So, I decided to paint the top of the box, from color to black and white.

Using mod podge, I decoupaged  the sides with this lovely paper I had picked up at Micheal’s.

And if we peak inside there is a burst of color, but it will not show from the outside!

Here I have placed it on the bookcase, next to a box with the same paper.

In my next post I will show you what the entire bookcase looks like. What do you think of my “new” from color to black and white box?

ολόκληρη η βιβλιοθήκη. Τι γνώμη έχετε για το “νέο” μαυρόασπρο κουτί μου;

This is a nice upcycled project. Your daughter will be more than happy!
    Take care,
    Anne.

  2. It’s amazing what a little mod podge and pretty paper can do! The plain, utilitarian box now looks like a decorative addition to the room. It’s great to be able to re-use perfectly good household items that just need a little bit of help to look pretty.

That is the reason I started this blog Carol. I needed to make changes but the economic situation was not getting any better so I decided to start upcycling and repurposing. This was one of the earlier posts with bad photos but the principle is still the same.

  3. Dianne says:

That looks so much better, it’s amazing what a bit of paper can do. x

  4. Wow, you would have to see the before, to believe it–great job! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Cecilia, the B/W was very helpful in unifying the whole look of the bookcase.

  5. Leanna says:

The original looked like functional kitchen storage, now its decor that would fit into any room. Your daughter will enjoy it for sure.

    • Mary says:

The original was actually one of four in primary colors. It was for the kids’ toys when they were little, primarily to store Legos. But they were remarkably sturdy. So why not revamp them and give them a second life.

  6. I love how this project came out. What a difference some paper makes. #fridayfrivolity xx

  7. Deborah says:

    Those are gorgeous!!!!

    • Mary says:

My kids love the black and white combo. That’s probably the only thing they agree on. Lol!

Paper and paint, so great for transforming ordinary things. You made them extraordinary! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  9. What a good idea! It looks so nice and you can customize the look of your visible storage. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Exactly. This box is really sturdy so it will last forever but we can always change the look.

  10. Nikki says:

Mary, I love the way you think. Just because this is used for storage does not mean that it can’t look good. I am a huge fan of black and white, and I love the pattern on this paper. So I really love this box. Pinned this post so that I can use it for redoing some of our storage areas. I really love this.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Nikki! I also am a huge fan of Black and White too and it is so easy to spuce up a space with just these colors and another for added punch. I just did this to try and unify her bookcase which had way too much going on.

  11. Emily says:

That black and white paper is so pretty! And I love that you’re able to repurpose some items you already had!

    • Mary says:

Emily for me that is always the goal. To spend as little as possible and to recycle what I have bacause I try to be earth friendly and not add to the garbage. Of course it helps when they turn out pretty.

  12. Julie says:

They look very classy, and I actually love the pop of bright yellow inside.

  13. Lynn Spencer says:

I have always loved black and white damask…so classy and works in so many situations. And I too have tons of those plastic boxes that will be around long after I’m gone. Covering them with a lovely paper is the perfect way to handle an ‘unsightly’ box.
    Thanks for sharing Mary
    Hugs, Lynn

    • Mary says:

Those boxes were from when the boys were tots. Therey are incridibly sturdy but looked outdated so this did the trick. Now my girl loves having it in her room.

  14. Seana Turner says:

I love the “black and white” look. Your daughter must be so happy. What a nice Mom to organize in a pretty way:) Love repurposing and getting organized! (visiting from #BragAboutIt)

    • Mary says:

Thanks Seana. I did this a while back but her room looks great, all her favorite colors and things hidden away.

  15. This is so pretty. I lovee the classic white and black.

    • Mary says:

Debra I always look to improve on what I already have. My girl loves the black and white look.

  16. Pili says:

I have a big love for damask Mary, so I have to say I love your boxes!! They are so classy now!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Pili, it really is a pretty pattern and one that my girl loves to have in her room.

  17. Stacey says:

Aren’t you smart, Mary?! The decoupage looks fantastic and makes everything match better. Love this idea.
    Happy Thoughts of Home. 🙂

  18. Perfection, Mary! Those boxes are adorable! I need to figure out this decopage thing. #WAYWOW

    • Mary says:

Thanks Regina. The decoupage thing is actually pretty easy, and it makes a world of difference.

  19. Emma Craig says:

What a great idea! Some Washi tape would work wonders, too. What a lucky teen to have such a creative mama!

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Emma. We work together to make a happy home and a room that she is comfortable in.
