I have lots of jars in my house, the “don’t get rid of it, you’ll need it for some project in the future” syndrome. For the holidays I thought I’d make some tea light holders using these jars. And then keep them for after the holidays, as they are not overly Christmasy.
I went to the store and picked up this spray, thinking it was for snow.
When I got home I read the label on the can and it said “spray for ice crystals”. In my haste, I had bought the snow spray that wasn’t! Now, I had no idea what this was but I figured, I’ve got nothing to lose and I’ve got plenty of jars! I taped off my jars and sprayed away!! As per the directions, they were supposed to dry within half an hour, but I ended up leaving them on the balcony overnight. Maybe there was too much humidity in the air?
Όταν έφτασα στο σπίτι διάβασα την ετικέτα πάνω στο δοχείο «σπρέι για κρυστάλλων πάγου”. Στην βιασύνη μου, είχα αγοράσει το σπρέι χιόνι που δεν ήτανε! Δεν είχα ιδέα τι ηταν αυτό, αλλά σκέφτηκα, δεν έχω τίποτα να χάσω και έχω πολλά βάζα! Σύμφωνα με τις οδηγίες, έπρεπε να στεγνώσουν σε μισή ώρα, αλλά τα άφησα στο μπαλκόνι όλη νύχτα. Ίσως να υπήρχε πάρα πολλή υγρασία στον αέρα;
The next day, I removed the tape, added some pretty lace and salt on the inside.
You can see that the effect is not snow like at all…
…except for the salt inside the jar.
You can see the full effect of the ice when the tea lights are lit.

I liked the effect so much I sprayed a few more of my glass objects.
Don’t they look cozy next to the lit fireplace?
Δεν φαίνονται άνετα δίπλα στο αναμμένο τζάκι;
Although I made these tea light jars for Christmas, I think that they can easily transcend the Christmas decor category and stay on my table for the whole winter. The snow spray that wasn’t, turned out to be a happy mistake for me. Has that ever happened to you?
Αν και έκανα αυτά τα ρεσώ βάζα για τα Χριστούγεννα, νομίζω ότι μπορούν εύκολα να ξεπεράσουν την κατηγορία ντεκόρ Χριστουγέννων και να μείνουν στο τραπέζι μου όλο το χειμώνα. Το σπρέι χιονιού που δεν ήταν, αποδείχθηκε να είναι ένα ευτυχής λάθος για μένα. Έχει συμβεί ποτέ σε σας;

I so love this, it’s the best mistake ever! LOL I wish my mishaps turned out this well. I love the ice look, so much better than snow, it’s unique and just gorgeous when the light plays over it! Although this was unintentional I must compliment you on them, I love them!
Nikki it is unique and right at this moment it matches perfectly with the weather. Icy and cold! I think I’m going to work on making some more mistakes.
Those really look beautiful with the candles inside–what a cool craft idea!
Thanks for joining us on The Alder Collective once again! Pinning, and we hope to see you again this week!
What a fun project Mary! I love when something doesn’t quite turn out as expected, but you still love the end result. Thank you so much for linking up at Create • Share • Inspire. We hope to see you back this week!

Hi Mary! Popping over from Snickerdoodle Sunday to thank you so much for linking up with us 🙂 Pinning and tweeting again to share the love 🙂 Have a great week!

Christine, I’m a New York girl, but I live in far away Greece. I also live in a coastal town where the weather doesn’t get too harsh. No ice and snow for me, only out of a can! Thanks for stopping over.
Joy it was a downright steal. I think it only cost $5 for the can. And I’ll have it for a long time. I am going a little crazy now using it wherever I see a glass surface.
These look absolutely great Mary. What serendipity on the spray. Things like that never happen to me, if I buy the wrong thing, I’ve bought the worst, wrong thing possible and generally it has to go back.
I didn’t even know this spray existed! It looks fab.

I didn’t know this spray existed. I tell ya I thought it was that snow spray. I didn not know they made such cool sprays that form patterns. I guess I got really lucky.
Mary, sometimes the best projects are the ones we didn’t intend to make. I love any suggestion for using all those jars we don’t want to throw away. Great Do it yourself. Thanks for sharing on Your Inspired Design.
What a happy mistake. I love the ice effect on the jars. It looks like my car windshield during the winter. I would leave them out all winter long too, they look so pretty. And that picture of them next to the roaring fire? It makes me want to curl up near them with a good book. Perhaps take a long winter’s nap!
Oooh Mary! I like the effect created with this crystal spray! How fun! I could see picking up some dollar store clear glass plates and spraying the edges…
Fun idea and thank you for sharing with Share Your Style #189 (Christmas week 2018),
Hugs and New Year’s blessings,
Barb 🙂
Wow, what a fun mistake. The jars really do look like they have ice crystals frozen on them! Such fun little candle holders for winter! Thanks, as always for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!
So it looks like it put an icy looking cover on the glass? I like the look! You CAN keep that out all winter I think. Looks so pretty all lit up & displayed on your table. Like the original jar too. I wish I had kept more of my really old glass jars. They are almost becoming obsolete. Pinned & G.
Maria that is exactly how it feels right now. We had snow in my little town in Greece after 10 years and it actually stuck for days. This is such a rare occurrence. Those lights add a bit of warmth to a dreary day.
Mary, I’m the same way with jars. I have tons of them sitting around waiting to be repurposed. I’ve also had tons of projects not turn out like I thought they would. I love what you did with the ice crystal spray!! Your jars are beautiful!! I like the details you added with the doilies and flowers! The fireplace looks so cozy too! Awesome job Mary!!!
Keri, we are turning into hoarders. But in a good way! The doily had once been huge and somehow it got ripped, so rather than throw it away I just use pieces of it for decorating. See, just like you, I don’t throw anything away.
I love how your jars turned out. It reminds me of the ice build up on the windows. So pretty. They are definitely winter candle holders not just for Christmas.
They look gorgeous! I really like the way the paint crinkled like frost on the window. Keeping the center clear was also a nice idea so you can see the tea light better. I think it was a successful mistake.
I love your mistake. I was getting cold looking at them becasue they made me think of ice. You can leave the out for you winter decor and maybe longer.
I like how they turned out, even if it wasn’t what you expected. They look so pretty and winterly Mary! I like the idea of adding white laces and using salt for the snow or ice effect is brilliant! I was looking for something the other day and thought of shredded coco at first, but then didn’t use that because I would have ended up with a million of ants after…. salt is brilliant!
A big thanks to the hubby for buying a ton of that salt. He originally wanted it for the olives … you see how everything is connected? Ants drive me crazy!! I couldn’t get rid of them all summer.
oh they are super pretty even if you bought the wrong spray. for sure they could stay out year round! I love the lacy trim added, so classy! I buy the wrong stuff all the time but mine doesn’t turn out so great 🙂
You probably won’t find it in Canada, you have the real thing. It only makes sense that I should find it here in Greece. The world has gone upside down Marie!
Why thank you. I’m so happy you stopped by. I have a ton of salt, my husand uses it to brine the olives. So it was a no brainer that I would borrow some from his stash!
Yes, Mary,
I feel the same….
Besides many glasses I have many other things where I think that I can still use.
So that’s creators themselves with us, and that’s a good thing.
Best regards
Uwe
don’t you love it when you have a pleasant surprise!? I quite like the effect of the ‘not snow’ on class…looks like frosted windows. And love the picture with your fireplace in the background with candle jar in front. Quite lovely.
Hugs! Lynn
It may not be snow, but it’s super cool! I love the crystal effect. I think these are perfect for a winter tablescape that you can keep out long after Christmas decor has gone back in the box.
Mary, even though it wasn’t the snowy look you were going for, I think they look wonderful, maybe even better than if they had the snow spray! They’re the perfect winter decor, and it looks just like ice! I’ve heard of snow spray, but not the ice kind. I’ll have to check it out!
Mary,
What a cool effect that mistake spray made! I’ve had many projects that did not turn out the way I expected . . .and only a few of them worthy of a blog post 🙂 I think your jars are perfect for winter decor. Thank you Kayla. I light them in the evenings and the whole room has a nice warm glow to it.
My favourite one is the spiral design. They look lovely, and you can make them all valentines-y with pink salt =D
Ohh Stella you are so right. I can add pink salt. That would be adorable. Thanks for the idea!!
What a fun project Mary! I love when something doesn’t quite turn out as expected, but you still love the end result. Thank you so much for linking up at Create • Share • Inspire. We hope to see you back this week!

Thanks Alicia, I was so relived that it was useable. I was afraid I’d have to toss it.
Thanks for sharing this project at Funtastic Friday!
Thank you Chris for visiting me.
Mary, these turned out so lovely–I’d say your “mistake” in choosing the wrong paint was serendipitous! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm! Pinning!
Yes indeed Cecilia. I’ll have to try and make some more of these types of mistakes.
Hi Mary! Popping over from Snickerdoodle Sunday to thank you so much for linking up with us 🙂 Pinning and tweeting again to share the love 🙂 Have a great week!

Thanks so much Laurie hope you also have a wonderful week and thanks for your kind words.
GORGEOUS fireplace. What country are you from Mary?
Christine, I’m a New York girl, but I live in far away Greece. I also live in a coastal town where the weather doesn’t get too harsh. No ice and snow for me, only out of a can! Thanks for stopping over.
Beautiful idea. And not very expensive.

Thanks so much Anne, it’s always a pleasure to have you visiting me. I hope you were able to go to those parties you wanted.
I love how these turned out! What a great unintended discovery. Thanks for sharing at Snickerdoodle Sunday, Mary. Pinned and Tweeted.
Beverly, I found that I can use them for Valentine’s day as well. A great discovery indeed! Thanks for dropping by!
Oh Mary, I do stuff like that all of the time. But this is a happy mistake. They are so pretty and I think they can work all year long.
Debra I’ve had them out all year and used them over and over again. They just need a little bit of a refresh after a year. I love happy mistakes!
Mary, sometimes the best projects are the ones we didn’t intend to make. I love any suggestion for using all those jars we don’t want to throw away. Great Do it yourself. Thanks for sharing on Your Inspired Design.
That is so true Carol. Many times a project will take us to where it wants to go and not the other way around.
What a happy mistake. I love the ice effect on the jars. It looks like my car windshield during the winter. I would leave them out all winter long too, they look so pretty. And that picture of them next to the roaring fire? It makes me want to curl up near them with a good book. Perhaps take a long winter’s nap!
I hear ya Nikki. A roaring fire and a good book. And let’s not forget the hot chocolate.
Such a beautiful affect! I have never even heard of ice crystal spray :). Your candle holders are just lovely Mary.
Thank you so much Debbie. I like starting out with projects and letting them take me where they will and this one was a pleasant surprise.
What a happy accident! I love the frost patterns it makes – so realistic. Also very happy to meet another Greek blogger – hello! 🙂
Hello Denise, it is nice to meet you! I’m popping over to visit your blog now. 🙂

What a very pretty effect! I love the frosty jars with the tea lights inside!
It was such a happy accident. I am really happy I messed up here.
Wow, what a fun mistake. The jars really do look like they have ice crystals frozen on them! Such fun little candle holders for winter! Thanks, as always for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!
I like this cute Bohemian touch!
Yes Wendi and it can be used almost all year long.
I like this semi translucent look Mary, but you had me the minute I saw the hand made crochet trim. Very pretty.
Leanna
Thank you Leanna. That is your style for sure. I remember those pretty pillows you had made.
So it looks like it put an icy looking cover on the glass? I like the look! You CAN keep that out all winter I think. Looks so pretty all lit up & displayed on your table. Like the original jar too. I wish I had kept more of my really old glass jars. They are almost becoming obsolete. Pinned & G.
Florence I don’t know what they are I just keep lots of jars around for these purposes. I hate to throw them out. I also use them to store beans in.
This reminds me of something you would find in a house in the snow tops mountains! So pretty.
Maria
Maria that is exactly how it feels right now. We had snow in my little town in Greece after 10 years and it actually stuck for days. This is such a rare occurrence. Those lights add a bit of warmth to a dreary day.
What a pretty accident! Those are very wintery looking and I love that effect. Pinned.
That is a very pretty effect. More like ice than snow, but pretty all the same.#overthemoon
Exactly Tracey, just like ice. I have to admit I prefer it to the snow, because it creates some interesting patterns on the glass.
Mary, I’m the same way with jars. I have tons of them sitting around waiting to be repurposed. I’ve also had tons of projects not turn out like I thought they would. Darlene that ice took a whole night to build up. At least I didn’t have to work hard for it. Just left it outside in the cold.

They look gorgeous! I really like the way the paint crinkled like frost on the window. Keeping the center clear was also a nice idea so you can see the tea light better. I think it was a successful mistake.
I agree Krista. I created different designs with the masking tape for a bit of interest. And the patterns that the ice forms are really intricate.
I love your mistake. I was getting cold looking at them becasue they made me think of ice. You can leave the out for you winter decor and maybe longer.
That’s exactly what I’m planning to do Debra! They look so nice next to the fireplace … hopefully they won’t melt!
I love your snow that wasnt, lol. Glad to see someone else keep jars. The end result is lovely. Thanks for sharing #overthemoon
Jennifer, since I started this blog I keep jars and anything else you can imagine. I am turning into a hoarder. Thanks for stopping by.
They came out so pretty. I love own they look by the fire. Hope you have a nice week.
Julie
Jullie, I was pleasantly surprised with them too. For a while there I thought they would never dry.
I like how they turned out, even if it wasn’t what you expected. They look so pretty and winterly Mary! I like the idea of adding white laces and using salt for the snow or ice effect is brilliant! Love the effect it has, Mary! Sometimes we make mistakes but they are worth because we discover new things
Yes Pili. It really upset me at first and when I sprayed it and it was not drying I thought, what a mistake. But it turned out great in the end.
oh they are super pretty even if you bought the wrong spray. for sure they could stay out year round! I love the lacy trim added, so classy! I buy the wrong stuff all the time but mine doesn’t turn out so great 🙂
Millie, I think I should start making some more of these mistakes in the future.
Super cool! Love the icy look!
It saved the day for me. I didn’t want to make those Jars overly Christmasy, so this turned out to be the perfect solution.
I really need to find some of this ice spray here in Canada – love this idea Mary!
You probably won’t find it in Canada, you have the real thing. It only makes sense that I should find it here in Greece. The world has gone upside down Marie!
I’ve never seen ice spray before but as soon as you add the candles it totally comes to life – what a beautiful effect.
Yes Julie, adding the tealights makes all the difference and you can see the patterns the ice makes.
What a nice effect. Lucky accident finding that cool effect spray. Very pretty craft (and how smart to use salt for snow!).
Why thank you. I’m so happy you stopped by. I have a ton of salt, my husand uses it to brine the olives. So it was a no brainer that I would borrow some from his stash!

Uwe, it is always a good thing when we can take the everyday and make them special.
They turned out pretty! I used some similar spray stuff on the bathroom cabinet so that people couldn’t see through the doors.
Keri I know what you mean about the bathroom. Hum, I wonder if this spray w ould hold up to the moisture in the bathroom. Now you’ve got me thinking.
Love this! Thank you for sharing with OMHG Wonderful Wednesday Link Party.. Have a great day, co-host Evija @Fromevijawithlove x

Thank you Lynn. I’m all for pleasant surprises. I’ll be lighting them every night and smiling at my happy mistake.
It may not be snow, but it’s super cool! I love the crystal effect. I think these are perfect for a winter tablescape that you can keep out long after Christmas decor has gone back in the box.
Thanks Meredith, I think I really lucked out with this mistake. And it is probably even better than the snow effect I was originally looking for.
Mary, even though it wasn’t the snowy look you were going for, I think they look wonderful, maybe even better than if they had the snow spray! They’re the perfect winter decor, and it looks just like ice! I’ve heard of snow spray, but not the ice kind. I’ll have to check it out!
