An Old Fashioned Christmas – Παλιομοδίτικα Χριστούγεννα

Sharing is caring!

Today I have a special post for you.  I am  participating in a Christmas Blog Hop along with lots of other very talented bloggers, which is hosted by Hometalk.com and CountryLiving.com.  I am inviting you inside my home for an old fashioned Christmas.

Home for Christmas - the boondocks blog
When you first walk in you’ll see my blackboard wall.  It has been festively decorated by my sweet daughter to show a snowy winter tree, something which we haven’t had much of here but this is a start.

Next to the blackboard I have placed my chivalrous trunk which I had decoupaged with   old pages, you can see that here. Now I’m pretty sure I told those elves to stay away from the trunk, but they are so mischievous, I’m sure they must be hiding in there.

On the trunk I have a little Christmas tree centerpiece and a basket where the Christmas cards are kept. I’ll be showing you how I put together the little tree centerpiece in my next post, I hope can join me.

Looking into the living room we have the tree in one corner, and on top of the sofa, frames that are all dressed up with vintage Christmas cards.

I added some old Christmas cards into the frames, to make them look vintage, and used brown paper for the  mats.

The wall  unit was redone a month ago when I flipped the books backward.  This gives me a neutral canvas on which to spread out my red Christmas Cheer.

Another trick is to use old frames and insert christmas cards in them.

The garland was made with paper tubes for Thanksgiving.  By adding some red I have transformed it into a Christmas  garland.

Another black frame with a cute Santa card.. sometimes less is more.

My old fashioned Christmas tree is ready. I was aiming  for a vintagy look and went with red and gold for my color palette.  The garland is made from lace ribbon. I have made many changes from last year. I’ll be talking about all of this and in more detail soon.

That’s my tour for now. I want to thank all of you for stopping by and visiting with me. I hope you’ll check back later this week to see how I made the little tree centerpiece. I wish all of you a wonderful Holiday Season.

Thank you so much Stacy. I try to make it cozy and warm on a budget while keeping the spirit of the past alive. Happy Holidays.

  2. Thanks so much for sharing your home tour for the holidays,I can see it’s filled with love and family- what a beautiful thing for Christmas! Absolutely loved your daughter’s big Christmas tree too! Merry Christmas XO – Wendi

    • Mary says:

Wendi everyone seems to love that chalkboard. It’s a good thing I got her to do it when she was in a good mood otherwise who knows what I’d have on my wall… she being the youngest and most tempermental. Merry Christmas to you and yours. XO

  3. Wow! I love your Christmas decor and the fact that you carry the Christmas Spirit in your heart the whole year though! I loved the holiday tour and you are so brave to tackle this project! I can see all the thought and work that went into getting your home ready! I want to come nestle in your holiday home!!! xx

    • Mary says:

Behind the scenes. It was a marathon weekend rush job. I knew what I wanted to show, I just had to get rid of all the extra clutter. In the end it was really good for me because I was able to organize much of my mess and move it out of the house. I can never relax fully when I have boxes all over the place. Thanks for your sweet comments. xx

  4. Mary, your home looks cozy and festive. Thank you for sharing your holiday tour @Vintage Charm!

  5. I love your new chalkboard Mary with the Snowy scene your daughter drew and great suggestion to put Christmas card in picture frames. I will definitely have to try that:). I hope you are having a wonderful week and take care, Tara

    • Mary says:

Thanks Tara. You too enjoy your lovely home and the holidays and stay away from Navy paint! 😉

  6. Sarah Eliza says:

It looks lovely, Mary! I adore your idea of putting greeting cards in frames… so simple and so genius. Love all of it. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Thanks Sarah Eliza. There is so much you can do with cards, put them in Frames, display them on shelves or even in a basket. Some of them are so beautiful like artwork.

  7. Ntina says:

What an amazing Christmas decoration Mary! You went all the way! Love your house with all the little details here and there! How creative was of you to flip the books? Crazy but it worked! Thanks for sharing, beautiful!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Ntina. It was crazy then but I’ happy now, because if I still had the books the other way we would have chaos!! Thank you sweet friend for your kind words.

  8. I am an old-fashioned kind of girl, so this all feels like home to me! 🙂 Thanks for welcoming me in. Stopping by from The Alder Collective!

    • Mary says:

So glad to have you visit Elizabeth! Sit down I’ll get you some hot cocoa and light the fireplace. Maybe if I finish it I’ll be able to post about that one too. Happy Holidays.

  20. Ilka says:

Mary – you are paying so much attention to so much detail. You really are going all out for the Holidays. I’m sure your kids enjoy all the decorations, too. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Ilka, this is all for me!! I love Christmas time, and making the house all cozy. I also like to play the nutcracker to get in the Christmas spirit. The kids have to put up with me! Lol!!

  21. Wow, this looks so beautiful. I love the blackboard wall right when you walk in, it’s a great focal point. Also, what a great tip to turn the books backward for a neutral background I never thought of that. Thank you for sharing at Welcome Home Wednesday, we’d love to have you back again!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Sam. That wall has made such a big impact in my home. It was such a boring wall before, and now it grabs you as soon as you walk in. Best thing I ever did! Thanks for stopping by and Happy Holidays.

  22. It is so fun and festive and you certainly achieved your goal of making a beautiful vintage Christmas!

  23. sheila e says:

You have some great ideas. Love your chalkboard and framing older Christmas cards. And…thanks for visiting me too. Merry Christmas, Sheila

    • Mary says:

Sheila I love visiting your blog, you are so full of great ideas and your house is full of interesting and beautiful things. Merry Christmas!

  24. Mary your home looks beautiful for the holidays! I like all the little details here and there, the cards in the frames and that you added red to your garland makes it look so festive! Your tree is so special with all your lovely ornaments! It looks cozy and inviting, I’d love to come and visit you!!!

    • Mary says:

Thank you sweet friend!! I would love for you to be able to visit and we can sit together and have some coffee together… I’ll even make some Greek coffee for you, double strength.

  25. I love your home tour, Mary! What really caught my eye was your creative way you stacked your bookshelves and that gorgeous chalkboard art! Swooning! Such a fun tour!

    • Mary says:

Donna that was me in the corner begging my daughter to draw the chalkboard art… This blog is a family affair. Thanks for hopping on over.

  26. It’s all so gorgeous especially that amazing trunk…did you decoupage it yourself?

  27. Everything is so festive. Love the ornaments and your tree is adorably beautiful… but your trunk makeover still has me swooning! It’s my favorite part of the entire room. 🙂

    • Mary says:

I have to agree with you on this one Robin. I’m also really happy with the flipped books. The room is already packed enough it didn’t need more noise from the books.

  28. Betsy says:

Everything is looking so festive. LOVE the chalkboard!!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Betsy. It serves a double purpose, now my kids don’t touch the wall so it stays clean!

  29. Mary, your house is beautifully decorated with lots of great ideas. I’m hosting my own Christmas tour, but I’m thinking I somehow missed this one with Hometalk. Sometimes I get so busy, I skim through my emails and this is what happens. I really like your idea of framing some older Christmas cards. There’s some that are just too pretty and I find myself keeping them.

    • Mary says:

Carol, I also keep too much and am trying to find ways to repurpose it around the house instead of having it in storage. It’s one way to keep us from getting bored with our decor.

  30. Lynn Spencer says:

Where to begin Mary? Right off, when I think back to your post, the closing picture of your bookcase with candles/lights just summarizes so well the feeling I took away of your home…Cozy and comforting with oodles of family memories and family contributions…just the way a home at Christmas time should look.
The idea of repurposing past Christmas cards…brilliant.
So easy to envision your family settling down to enjoy all that the holidays offer us in your lovely and cozy home.
Thanks for giving us a peek!
    Kisses, Lynn

    • Mary says:

Thank you for your sweet compliments friend. That is exactly how I want my home to be, comfortable for the family. And to be surrounded my objects that have some sort of meaning.

  31. Keri says:

Mary, thank you for the Christmas Hometalk tour!! You did a beautiful job decorating for Christmas!! I love the idea of framing your Christmas cards!! Those little dolls are so sweet, and the ornaments on the mirror are awesome!! I can’t wait to see a close-up of the ornaments. 🙂

    • Mary says:

I’m so happy that you could visit me dear friend. When you come over next time we’ll repurpose old things I have in the basement together. The bottomless pit basement! 😉

  32. Pili says:

Mary, yours is a truly cozy home. Love the Merry Christmas drawing your daughter did in your new chalkboard and all the homemade details you have around the house. Adding Christmas cards into frames is a brilliant idea and they look lovely.
    Thanks for sharing your home

    • Mary says:

Pili thanks for all your wishes and all your support. I’m so glad to have you ladies with me on this spectacular journey.

  33. Zografia says:

The blackboard corner is beautiful Mary! I love it!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Zografia, I had to beg my daughter to draw it. Weather they like it or not everyone helps mom with the blog… Hahaha!

  34. Kim says:

Fabulously cozy, Mary and super festive!

  35. Mary, Your home looks so warm and welcoming. I especially like how you decorated the mirrors. The shelf look great all decorated for Christmas.

    • Mary says:

Debra thanks so much friend. I always want everyone to feel warm and cozy, especially during Christmas time. And the shelves were rescued in the knick of time, because if I had left them as before it wouldl have looked like a kaleidoscope in here.

  36. Virginia says:

Thanks for the lovely tour! Everything looks beautiful.

  37. Oh My Goodness what fun photos, I love all that you have done with your decorating, cute touches with the ribbon.

  39. Celeste says:

Your home looks fantastic! I am still so in love with your chalkboard wall! And with the lights off and the tree and the lanterns all lit up it looks so warm and cozy!

    • Mary says:

Thanks so much Celeste. That’s the way I like it best too. Recently we’ve been having power outages at night , because this is Greece, and I’ve been taking the opportunity to light a bunch of tealights. It’s magical in here.

  40. Jackie Smith says:

Hello my new friend in Greece! Thank you for finding our blog and writing such wonderful comments. I will write more soon and add your blog to my reading list and become a regular here. ( I noticed that you read Poppy Views, but have you also discovered Olympia in Corinth who writes Things and Thoughts or Susan not far from Olympia who writes Greeker than the Greeks?) Love your blog and so very nice to meet you. Hugs, Jackie

    • Mary says:

Jackie I see that I have a lot of catching up to do. We are definitely keeping in touch. And I’ll also check out these other wonderful bloggers. Its a pleasure to meet you. xoxo

  41. JenniferAbel says:

Mary I love your decorations especially the pine cone as the remind me of Christmas when I was little. Thank you for sharing on #overthemoon ,have a great week.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Jennifer, I have always incorperated pinecones into my winter decor. It’s just not winter with out them.

  42. I love how decorated your fabulous chalkboard for the holidays Mary. Yes please to your adorable little snowman! Pinned to share 🙂

    • Mary says:

Thanks my friend. The chalkboard was the result of my little one’s labor. So we have her to thank for that. And I know you are partial to snow! 😉

  43. You sweet daughter is very talented, Mary! I love that snowy tree she drew. And your home looks so cozy.

    • Mary says:

Jas, that’s what it’s all about for me, relaxing and being warm and cozy in the wintertime.

  44. I love all the clever ideas you shared here! There are so many, but to name a few, the tubes for the garland that doubled from the Thanksgiving decoration and I am so impressed with the idea of turning the books backwards! Can’t wait to see more.

    • Mary says:

Thanks Carrie, since I’ve started blogging I’ve turned my house into one giant experiment. But I’m loving every minute of it. My husband jokes that he never knows what he’ll come home to.

  45. Kimberley says:

    Mary,
It’s all so pretty, I love how you framed the vintage cards!
Your tree is beautiful! And I love your nativity scene and you are right, it is the reason we are celebrating Christmas!
I love what you did with your trunk, it looks amazing with the pages on it, I love old trunks! We have one that belonged to my husbands grandfather that we have to re-do.
Your chalkboard looks so pretty too!
Have a wonderful week!! Hugs, Kimberley

    • Mary says:

Kimberly, in years past I had to put some sort of fabric over the trunk because it was in such bad shape. This is the first year that it really shines in the room. I’m so glad I took the plunge and redid it. You should try it too, it’s not hard just do it in installments. You too have a great week Hugs back!
