How to Paint your Front Door for a Sturdy Finish

10/31/2018

I had an accident about a month ago.  No, it wasn't a big deal but it forced me to repaint my front door.  Which actually kinda needed it anyway.

Today I am showing you how to paint your front door for a sturdy finish. One that will last through even a nor'easter!

We had a severe rain storm a month ago and since we were not prepared we ended up with this mess on the door.

The culprit was these flowers which I had made into this wreath. When it rained we had not changed out our storm door yet and the water went right through the netting and this was the result.

the red dye came from the faux flowers, How to Paint your Front Door for a Sturdy Finish theboondocksblog.com

What I Used:

  • Americana Decor Curb Appeal front door and shutter paint
  • Brush
  • Drop cloth
  • Command hook

The How To:

Right away I knew who to reach out to for my problem.  Yes, the ever trusty DecoArt company provided me with this paint.  It is called Americana Decor Curb Appeal and it is not just a regular paint. It is made specifically for front doors and shutters!

In fact it is great for wood or metal doors.  Or even a mailbox!  And rails!  I have plenty of those!

It is thicker than regular acrylic paint and it is also water based.  Cause you know I have nightmares about those other paints that are oil based and so hard to apply.

And fade resistant so it can take a beating from the sun!

I chose the Salem Grey because when you've got a brick house there's not very much that matches aside from white.

I wiped it down first to get all the excess dirt off.  I then went over the indentations and then painted the rest.

It took me about two coats and a little touch up here and there and I was done in two hours, allowing for drying time between the coats.  Below is the door after the first coat.

Here is the storm door all ready with the glass insert to protect it.  We have since had a nor'easter! And it's held up beautifully!

I liked the durability of this paint so much, I am actually going to use the rest to paint the indoor doors because mine take a lot of abuse.

It comes in a 16 oz 473 ml bottle which is the perfect size, not too much but not so little that you can't finish a project. In fact I used less than half the bottle.

I think it is the perfect color for all those flashy bricks!  The paint comes in many shades to choose from.

On a sunny day it looks almost like a slate blue!

I guess we can say that the accident was a good thing!  It really was time for a paint job and this was the perfect excuse!  Now you too know how to paint your front door for a sturdy finish! Sturdy enough to survive a nor'easter!

Do you like my color choice?  What other colors go with brick?

The door looks great, a happy accident. I got a new door years ago and never painted it. Now that I know how nice this paint it I will have to decide on a color and get busy.

You certainly will love it Debra. It goes on super easy and is not like the old time paints that were such a horror. And with 21 colors to choose from you will have a ball!

Mary, you are so handy, I think you can do anything! We decided last time we painted a door that it really was going to be the LAST time we EVER painted a door ourselves! :D We'd rather just hire YOU to do it! #BloggersPitStop

Jean I'll grab my paint brush and paint and hop on over. But seriously this paint was so easy to use. I actually dread using enamels and those types of paints but this is new generation stuff and it goes on so easy, not like the old time stuff that would dry before you had a chance to brush it on and then it would form droplets.

Your door looks great, Mary. Nice to know there is good quality paint that can withstand the elements. Oh my, I'm swooning over your railing too.

Marie I cannot sing enough about this wonderful paint, It went on fast and easy and was not causing and drips at all. As for the elements you need to worry about that more than we do but we sure have been getting our fair share.

Love the color Mary but I have to ask. Sorry, it's probably a silly question, but I've never heard of a storm door. We don't have those things here in S Africa. Do you only put it up when the weather turns bad? How does it work? And then I've got to say something about that little ghost of yours. It's sooooooooooooooooo cool. Love the piccy where it's blowing in the wind and Tatou doesn't even look concerned that there's this thing flapping around above his head :D He's the coolest fur baby ever

The door looks great. I never thought that a wreath could stain a door like that. You certainly made the best of it.

I like the grey with the red brick. Very pretty, and it makes the brick area near the door pop with color! Thank you for sharing at Celebrate It!

I love the door. Did you paint it inside and out, or just the outside. Trying to decide how much to order. Found your blog through Knick of Time.

Thanks!

Hi Cindy I did two coats and a little touch up on one side of the door. But I had more than half of the paint left over so one jar would definitely be enough. It goes on thick and covers very well. Good luck with your door.

I really love brick walls but I just realized the problem with the door color! You did a perfect job picking a great and interesting shade!

Your door looks lovely. Our siding is already a light gray, so I'm thinking the Harbor Blue might look nice, Not sure though because our roof is Forest Green Metal. hmmm, will have to play around I think.
