Sharing is caring!
This next project was a vision I had in my mind involving this piece of wood you see below. Unfortunately things don’t always come out looking as great as they do in your mind. So reality bit the dust on this one.
But being one to not give up so easily I persisted because necessity is the mother of invention. And so I am here to share with you how to make an easy rustic hook rack for your entryway. Because we all need someplace to hang our necessities.
Disclosure: I was compensated for doing this post with product. However, all the opinions stated here are my own. I only use products I love and would recommend to my viewers.
What I desperately needed was wall organization ideas for my tiny hallway. You know when you walk in the door and want to hang up your grocery bags or that sweater you throw on to run outside to get the mail. It had to be small yet nice looking.
I had done another one similar which you can see here but I needed something smaller because my entryway is tiny!
What I Used:
- Set of Two Double Prong Robe Hooks in Matte Nickel
-
a piece of left over wood 4 inches by 26 inches
- DecoArt Americana Clear Cream Wax
- screws for the hooks
- screwdriver
- 2 screw eye hooks
The How To:
I rummaged through my dad’s stash and came up with this winner. It was just an old piece of wood.
It had a lot of age to it in the form of marks and old white paint. I have no idea how it ended up like this. The only thing that I knew was that I really liked that rustic look.
Now if you know me you know I am always with a paint brush in my hands and normally that is what I would have done to this piece of wood. Except that this time I stopped myself and said “Self why can’t you leave well enough alone? This piece of wood is like you, a certain age and it is proud to show off its wrinkles and white hair!”
All I did to it was pass a little creme wax over it to give it a bit of shine. You know like when you use mousse on your hair!
Doesn’t the aged wood look great with that lovely soft finish on the hooks?

I screwed on two eye hooks so that I’d be able to hang them on the wall. Here you see twine which is also another option.
Instead of fighting to see who will get all the attention they seem to be in harmony and complement each other perfectly!
And here they are holding all of the bare necessities!
Sometimes you really need to leave well enough alone and listen to your old self! 😉
Now when I’m ready to run out the door I just grab my stuff and go…and wink at that rustic wood which can teach us all some life lessons!
Sometimes it is just easier to make something yourself then to go out and buy it. I mean where else could I have used this gorgeous rustic beauty but in my entryway! And learned to appreciate all those wrinkles!

These nickel hooks made the perfect much with the old wood. It’s so nice that I’m happy that you didn’t paint it!
That is how I feel too Katerina, some things are not meant to be painted. This wood has a story to tell.
Hi Mary, a home can never have enough hooks! Our hallway looks like a school cloakroom with the ammount of hooks there (and we could still do with more. I love the fact you raided your Dads stash. Like Father like Daughter? I do like soft finished metal too.
xx
Debbie I agree with you 100% the more hooks the better. And yes it seems that I am more and more like my dad -each day I see the similarities.
You’re right…the hooks and the wood do well together! It’s a nice blend & a great DIY project!
Yes Florence when I saw that wood it was love at first sight no way was I going to ruin it with paint.
Such a simple and functional rack. I love it. Pinned.
That is just what was needed! Function above all else.
Can’t get any easier than this. Doesn’t take up a lot of space and it’s functional as well. One can never have too many hooks for organization. And you know I love the rustic look!
I do Linda. Not everything needs to be complicated. In this case I just let the wood and hooks shine.
I love an easy and functional DIY. Fabulous.
Just letting the beauty of the two materials shine.
Mary, the rustic wood makes a wonderful coat rack. It has character and beauty and of course super useful for holding things.
It would have been a shame to cover up all that rustic beauty with paint.

Thank you so much Carrie!
I totally agree with you on the wood. Best left alone! I love rustic and this turned out very nice. Thank you for sharing on Party in Your PJ’s.
In this case it shone all on its’ own.
I have pieces of wood like this! I need to do this for my next home. Great job Mary!
So simple and practical!
Love the way your rack turned out! Thanks for sharing at The Blogger’s Pit Stop! Roseann from This Autoimmune Life
Thank you so much Roseann!
Mary you know I love easy DIY’s, this one is really cute and coat racks are always a great way to display pretty hats or purses!
Katrin I have a bunch of purses and tote bags hanging on there now. It is perfect for behind the door in the tiny entryway.
Can’t get much easier than that! I have a hook area in my entry, too… but, I can’t hang keys on it, because the hooks are a bit more ornate (I think you saw it in my post). Anyways… I really like this super easy idea!
The easier the better Julie, or we can let the hooks do the talking. 😉
I love how it turned out. And not a whole lot of work. When I first saw the post I thought, that gal is painting again. Love it! The wood looks great but that shine really made it pop. I love seeing what you are up too. I wish I had you KNOW HOW TO! LOL! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
Thanks Cindy. No know how just a lot of reading other blogs that’s how I learned. I have really come to love all things rustic!
My motto is ‘one can never have too many hooks… and chocolate’. ;).
xxx
I’ve got the chocolate covered, but I need more and more hooks!
These are always so handy. I place something similar inside my closets on each end for purses. Its especially handy in the front closet. I love them, this is such an easy and useful project Mary.
Easy and useful and perfect for behind the door for all that stuff you need to grab as you run out the door.
Nothing better than an easy DIY!! Thanks so much for sharing this great tutorial <3
You can say that again Martha. And simple is sometimes more useful too.
Super simple and very cute !
The simpler the better!
I’m with you on this one Mary. Some times it’s best to leave what time and nature have done alone and celebrate it instead. Although adding a little bit of wood mousse is never a bad thing 😉 especially when you pair it with matte nickel. Love how your hook rack turned out
I am really glad I did this one. There is a tiny space right behind the door that it fits in. And all my necessities are right there to grab as I run… um, walk.
I love that wood. It has the true Farmhouse look! Great quick project.
Exactly what I thought Lorin. Sometimes it’s best to leave it alone.
Now that is a good looking piece of wood. You made it even better by adding the hooks. It is a great little piece to help you stay organized.
I was so glad when I found it and after a good cleaning it shined and looked so special.
