A Heart Shaped Box for Valentine’s Day Crafting

Sharing is caring!

It’s my favorite time of the month again, with the International Bloggers Club challenge.  We are a group of friends from all over the world who get together every month to share our projects and discuss how things are done in our countries.   Last time we shared gift wrapping ideas, and the month before wooden projects

And now with February right around the corner we are sharing our Valentine’s Day crafts with you.

At the start of this month I had shared 10 projects for a special Valentine’s Day. But I just love a good Valentine’s Day challenge and this was it for me.  One project in particular really got my creative juices flowing as you will see below.

What I Used:

  • Heart shaped box with Styrofoam insert
  • burlap ribbon
  • coral colored scrapbook paper 12″ by 12″ (30 by 30 cm)
  • faux flowers from the dollar store
  • a ribbon that originally contained Jordan Almonds

I started out with this heart shaped box with an espresso set inside.  I believe it was a wedding gift favor that my dad handed down to me. Thanks Dad!!!  Now I’m not much of an espresso drinker but I cannot pass up a nice box! It was just screaming “Use me for Valentine’s Day!!”  And that is exactly what I did!

Below you can see what it looks like when emptied out.  It has Styrofoam under the satin fabric and spaces for the coffee machine and for cups and saucers. I wanted to work with those cut out spaces so I just left it like that.

The How To:

The first thing I did was to make some roses out of burlap ribbon.  I think I’m actually getting better at this.  I had attempted it before with my basket bottom craft.   In this case the more you practice the better you get.  Here is a video on how to make them from someone who really knows how to do it.  The ribbon I got had white edges, so it makes them look extra special.

I placed them in the three large openings inside the satin covered Styrofoam.

I then took that ribbon that was included in the box and had the Jordan almonds nestled inside, and turned most of that into a rose as well.

That also went inside the heart shaped box.

The next step was inspired from Canary Street Crafts.  They had made beautiful spiral flowers using just paper. I found this beautiful shade of coral scrapbook paper at Michael’s which I thought would be perfect for this project. I outlined four circles and cut them out.

Then I cut them into spirals.  To get the shape, I twisted the paper around itself and just held it tightly woven for a few minutes.  Once I let it go it opened up like you see below.  The ladies who originally made it used glue, but I didn’t use anything.

I placed them in the box and they held their shape very well, so unless I decide to hang this up on the wall, there will be no need for glue.

The last items that I added was these faux flowers which I got at the Dollar Tree.  Instead of roses I purposely chose these small flowers, some of which were coral colored.

I cut them up into small branches using pliers.

And then just stuffed them all over the place.  Anywhere the white satin was showing through, I just added the flowers.

The flowers look like they are bursting out of the box!

Here you can see the little flower and faux diamond piece that originally held the Jordan Almonds.

I even stuck a few flowers in the center of the burlap roses.

Now what am I going to do with this?  Well for now I think it makes a lovely piece to place on a dresser or as a centerpiece.  But I can also hang it on the wall… of course I will have to glue everything in place.

Right now I have it leaning against a frame which has a soft pink color as background.  I think that it is more than enough to put me in the Valentine’s Day spirit.

I’ve gotta say thanks to my dad here for gifting me this wedding favor.  I may have no use for the espresso set but the box was a big hit with me!!  I hope you are inspired by this outside the heart shaped box thinking and come up with something like this for your Valentine’s Day crafting.

I would’ve been dancing for joy had I unearthed an espresso set but then I am a confessed coffeeholic. I just adore what you did with the heart box and the array for pretty handmade roses. Pinned and shared and had to come visit the blog for a closer look. ♥

Hi Mary, this is absolutely darling!! I have a box that would be perfect for doing this. Your flowers look great. I have made them before and they are a bit tricky. 🙂 I wanted to feature you, but Share Your Cup is not listed on your linky page. I know I have featured you before. I must have missed checking. It’s one of my party rules. I’m sure it’s not intentional.
    hugs,

TJan thank for thinking of me. I have the name of your blog party next to the “Thursday” . I was unable to find a button so I just used the name.

  6. Those boxes are so beautiful. What a great way to decorate for the holiday.

  7. Now that I see your tutorial, I realize we have a box like that with a tea set in it. My kiddos used to play tea party with it.

  8. Kathy A says:

Your heart box is lovely, Mary. I want to try those spiral flowers as I think I can master those faster than the ribbon roses! The mix of textures and colors was awesome; just what I like in a floral decoration. It would be lovely year round in a romantic/cottage themed room, too.

  9. Keri Roberts says:

  15. Ooooh, Mary!
This heart box turned out really beautiful!!! You KNOW I pinned it to my Hearts to You! board on Pinterest… 😉 Also to Crafts to Make, because this would be such a beautiful project to make for Valentine’s and for a wedding.

Mary, this is such a creative use of the box and you filled it beautifully! We’re featuring this at tomorrow’s Snickerdoodle Party! Thanks for sharing with us!

  30. Well now, that is very pretty. Do any blokes ever make these types of things, I wonder? Seems like something a woman would like to receive, mostly.
“Knights in white satin…. dododo dee do da dooo”

  31. I remember seeing this last year Mary! Still love it! Simple way to upcycle a heart shaped box with all the pretty flowers.

  32. Heather says:

This is beautiful, love this idea!

  33. Chas Greener says:

Mary this is simply stunning, and I love the upcycle! Great job and thanks so much for sharing.

  34. Ahhhh Mary, that looks so incredibly lovely and what a beautiful way to decorate for Valentine’s day. I think you’re going to have to glue those flowers in at some stage. This is way to beautiful not to have hanging on the wall all year long

    • Mary says:

I think so too Michelle, every time I try to move it the flowers pop out. Haha!! They are so excited to be all together.

  35. This is so pretty Mary, and it looks like it was fun to make too. I love making ribbon flowers. No two are identical!

    • Mary says:

That is so true Doreen, each one has it’s own little personality. I had loads of fun with this one and the truth is I had no idea what I was doing when I started out!

  36. Lauren says:

This is SO pretty – love how you made the flowers and then put this all in the frame!

    • Mary says:

I had such bad lighting and putting it in the frame really made all the difference when it came time to take the photos.

  37. Pamela List says:

This is so pretty. I am thinking a kiddie version for my Grandaughter. Love it!

  38. Josephine says:

That flower-filled heart box is so lovely. As for the espresso pot, don’t forget that you can turn espresso into a cappuccino by adding some milk froth. I have one a bit larger than yours and of course, it’s pink! It comes in handy when we lose power (which we do often in this rural area). Even without power, my gas stove works so I can heat water for coffee or tea.

    • Mary says:

Josephine I really love cappuccino, I guess I’ll have to dig out the old machine and try it. Thanks for the tip and I’m glad you enjoyed the craft idea.

  39. jeanie says:

I think it’s fun we did different takes on heart-shaped boxes today! I love the pretty flowers — I’m going to click back to your earlier tutorial on the flowers. (I filled my box with pink and white M&Ms!) I need to give those flowers a try!

    • Mary says:

I’m going over to your blog right now Jeanie. I think the M&M may have an edge over the flowers!! 😉

  40. Mary, this turned out beautifully. I love the burlap roses. Have never seen them with the white along the edges.

    • Mary says:

I found this particular ribbon at TJ Maxx on the sale rack after Christmas. I also found a few in Amazon but not the exact kind.

  41. Pili says:

You made me laugh Mary, you did the same as my kids do when they get a gift, they are fascinated by the wrapping paper or the box and pay little attention to what’s inside.
Anyone can use an expresso but few can make a box look so beautiful. Love the burlap flowers (thanks for the link) and how you combined the rest, it so pretty and colorful. Has your dad seen it?

    • Mary says:

Haha!! I looked at that espresso machine and put it aside because that box was like wow for me! I will definitely have to show it to him and he’ll probably complain that there is nothing wrong with the coffee machine!

  42. I really loved those roses out of the burlap ribbon! This turned out so beautiful and romantic!

  43. Sara says:

It turned out so pretty; I love that you reused EVERYTHING! I had to chuckle though; it reminds me of kids who get a great toy, but then tire of it and end up playing with the box/packaging instead. The packaging always seems to win out 🙂

    • Mary says:

I always try to reuse everything otherwise there would be no room in the house for me! 😉 And yes I am proud to be a big “kid”!!

  44. Patti says:

You heart shape box for Valentine’s Day came out so pretty. I love the different textures and shapes you used to create the flowers.

  45. Ivory says:

Fabulous job, I love them all

  46. Meegan Fast says:

Oh Mary! Your Valentine is just gorgeous. You have so many details, textures and beautiful colors. Happily pinning.

  47. This is so lovely. I bet this will be a Valentine’s Day decoration you enjoy year after year.

  48. FLORENCE says:

Mary, that’s adorable and very inspiring! All using things you have on hand, except the paper from Michael’s I guess. It looks like it’s the stiffer scrapbook paper, right? I love that white edged burlap ribbon you’re using and filling in with the white ribbon and flowers is genius. A very pretty look! Now I’m wondering why you, who likes strong coffee, doesn’t go for the expresso set??? Hmm?

  49. Leanna says:

Very nice use of an old box Mary, your Valentine is gorgeous. But ignoring an espresso machine? Never ever in this house lol

  50. Absolutely gorgeous! Your dad probably knew the box was safe with you (he just forgot to take the expresso stuff out) and that you’d turn it into something beautiful! And you did…

  51. Mary, this is beautiful! What a great idea. 🙂

  52. Jennifer W Dziekan says:

Sooo cute! What a sweet idea for my daughters to either make with me or for me to make for them! Throw in a heart shaped gift card from Starbucks or one from Pink and it’s fit for a teen.

  53. maria says:

I want one on my side table just to look at when I pass, such a beautiful idea with ribbon and those roses are so pretty! Maria

    • Mary says:

Thanks Maria, I’ve got it right near my desk, It makes me so happy to look at all those flowers.

  54. Katrin says:

What a super pretty and sweet Valentines Box Mary! I absolutely love the idea and the mix of material and colours you used to make this beauty!

    • Mary says:

This one was on my mind for quite a while since my dad had given me that box. I’m so happy it all came together.

  55. Claire says:

What a sweet valentines decoration, I like all the different DIY flowers.

  56. Nikki Gwin says:

Mary this is absolutely beautiful! I love how you propped it in the picture frame too!!
