A milk crate Repurposed into a stool - Κιβώτιο γάλα μετατράπηκε σε σκαμνί

Sharing is caring!

As I was writing the title of this post I realized that I am taking stools and repurposing them as something else, now I am about to repurpose something else into a stool.  And why could I not have been happy with the stool I had in the first place.  It was a perfectly good stool… or was it?  What is it with me?  Always repurposing?

Now the real reason I am about to repurpose this  thing here is because it has stability. We like to repurpose but we want functionality as well.

Όπως έγραφα τον τίτλο αυτού του post κατάλαβα ότι παίρνω σκαμνιά τα αποπροσανατολίζω ως κάτι άλλο, και τώρα είμαι έτοιμη να επαναπροσδιορίσω κάτι άλλο ως σκαμνί. Και γιατί να μην είμαι ικανοποιημένη με το σκαμνί που είχα αρχικά.  Ήταν  ένα απολύτως κατάλληλο σκαμνί … ή μήπως δεν ήταν. Τι έχω πάθει; Πάντα  αποπροσανατολίζω πράγματα;

This thing that you see is an old milk crate, It must be from the 1950’s… I found 3 of them in the basement.  This one is the smaller of the three. I will have another post for the 2 larger crates. I set about making it a stool because it is very stable and sturdy.
I spray painted it grey. And then decided to make a nice bright cushion for the top… you know to rest my weary feet.  I measured the top using cardboard.

Then cut the fabric to the desired shape.  I sewed the pieces together, but you can also glue them.  And finally I stuffed  it with left over fabric scraps.

The fabric I used was from a blouse that no longer fit me, so I  had some scraps of fabric leftover. This is what I did with them.

I wrapped them around the metal part of the crate to brake up the grey with a little color.

After I finished I realized that I didn’t like the fabric wrapping in the middle so I removed it and re-wrapped it higher up, like this:

Αφού τελείωσα κατάλαβα ότι δεν μου άρεσε το περιτύλιγμα υφάσματος στη μέση έτσι το ξανατύλιξα  πιο ψηλά, έτσι:

And my repurposed milk crate is now a lovely stool.

I really love the lime yellow color against the grey metal. Another great project and a new piece for my balcony!  Who would have thought I could turn a metal crate into a stool!

    • Mary says:

I am having so much fun with these things Barb. And to think I had to google them when I first discovered them down there.

  5. Carol says:

Great idea and it looks cute and very sturdy.

  6. Good idea. I like that you added some fabric around the metal base to give it a more colorful appeal. That metal is just great with fabric. Well done.

  7. Renee says:

It turned out darling! I love the print as well! You are so creative.

  8. Your project turned out great…. a useful item that adds color too. 🙂

  9. Heidi says:

Love how you not only repurposed a crate but also a blouse. It looks adorable!

  10. Such a clever repurpose of a milk crate Mary! I love the combo of the lemon and the grey!!

  11. I made several of these for my daughter’s pre-k class (I just used plastic crates though). They are great for the little ones to sit on. Thanks for sharing with us at The Blogger’s Pit Stop!

  12. Mary, this jumped out at me at #BloggersPitStop because it is gorgeous! Now I must find a sufficiently old milk crate. All I ever see are the new plastic ones, and that won’t do! And moving the trim up to the higher level made all the difference. You are so clever!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Jean. I am so lucky that my mother in law saved all these old things that I was able to upcycle.

  13. Mary,
Love this idea!! And I also have a vintage milk crate that I was using as a planter in the back yard but I really love this idea!! Thanks so much for sharing!
    Hugs,
    Debbie

Looks great- cute and rustic! Pinned! Thanks for sharing at Handmade & Otherwise- please join us again!

  15. Michele says:

This is like stone soup- you really can make something wonderful out of not much in the way of the simplest ingredients! This little stool is happy!

  16. Kathy A. says:

I graduated from college in ’73; my metal milk crate became extra seating with a 70’s multicolor pillow on it and stored my LP records. My mom had also made a matching manual typewriter cover! We were sooo COOL! Still use the crate as a step stool! Don’t remember how I got the crate but I never had the nerve to filch them like everyone else did!

    • Mary says:

I found these in my basement. My Mother in law used to put things down there that she didn’t want any more but she could never throw out. Lucky me!

  17. This is such a cute repurposing of the crate and the blouse! I’m constantly impressed by your creativity, Mary!

  18. Emy says:

I love this upcycle! It’s such a cool piece and the fabric is great!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Emy it was super easy to do and it is one of my most used pieces out in the balcony!

  19. Leanna says:

I like the yellow higher up as well Mary. Greece, on a deck, feet up, with a book. Sounds like heaven girl. This is a really cute makeover and I like he way you reused a piece of clothing for it.

    • Mary says:

You know me Leanna, I’ll reuse anything I see in front of me. Can you imagine me trying to downsize after I;ve saved almost everything? Lol!

  20. Betsy says:

What a great way to repurpose an old milk crate. These things were built like bricks, so it’s going to last for years. Thanks for sharing with us at Talk of the Town.

    • Mary says:

Yes Betsy they are incredibly sturdy. I’m pretty sure they are at least 50 years old.

  21. Stacey says:

Good morning, Mary! So glad you shared your smart salvage idea at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Where are you getting those milk crates, by the way. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Thank you Stacey. The milk crates were found in my infamous basement. I am always finding things down there.

  22. Great transformation!

  23. Sandra Garth says:

So bright and cheerful! I would love to take a look into your infamous basement I bet there are some real treasures there.

  24. Kim says:

    Kim

    • Mary says:

Thanks Kim. There is nothing more satifying for me than to be able to repurpose something.

  25. Pamela Smith says:

This looks great! I love the yellow on the grey too. Good idea!

    • Mary says:

Thanks so much Pamela, I was looking for a fun color and lucky for me I had this old blouse that I repurposed.

  26. Dori says:

I love love the milk crate turned stool. So many cute ideas you have here. I wish i could find a crate just like your to make one for myself…

    • Mary says:

Thanks Dori. I found this in the corner of the basement. I think we had been accumulating junk and did not know what “treasures” we had till I started this blog!

  27. Martie says:

Another awesome repurposing idea from the mind of Mary! I LOVE this stool! I’m inspired to find some milk crates, or anything else I can make a seat cushion for. We’re actually going to make some stools out of old tree stumps, but that’s pretty simple stuff! Lol! Maybe they need cushions….

    • Mary says:

Martie, I used to have old tree stumps for stools. You definitely need to make yourself some cushions. We have to have comfort above all else.

  28. Julie says:

That sure is cute, Mary. I agree about raising the yellow wrapping, too 🙂

    • Mary says:

Thanks Julie. It was fun transforming it and I really get lots of use out of it.

  29. Laura says:

    So practical yet beautiful.
My mother always kept her milk crates for projects too.
Thank you for being at TOHOT!
As always, we are so glad you are here.

    • Mary says:

Ok so now you can sneak over to your mom’s house and get some. They are unbelievably sturdy.

  30. You’re not going to believe this Mary. I know we’ve got a lot in common but this is crazy. I’m working on the exact same thing as I type. I’d love a wire crate like yours though. Mine is just one of the more modern plastic ones. Thanks for linking up to Thriving on Thursdays, as always.
    Anne xx

  31. Lynn Spencer says:

Mary, what I wouldn’t give to be able to ‘shop’ your basement. It’s a treasure trove! And I do love that yellow ikat fabric…I am sure it looks fantastic on your porch.
    Wishing you a lovely weekend!
    Hugs, Lynn

    • Mary says:

Lynn that yellow fabric is from a blouse that I repurposed. If I have clothing that I can’t wear any longer but I love the fabric I keep it and repurpose it into a pillow. One of my little tricks.

  32. Super cute stool! I want one! I really like the fabric you used, and it does look great with the barrel! Thanks for sharing at the Submarine Sunday Link Party!!

  33. Ann says:

Great repurpose – I’m sure it will last forever!

  34. I’m the same when it comes to repurposing, Mary! Love the fabric you chose, thanks for sharing @Vintage Charm!

  35. Helen Fern says:

Looks like I’ll be looking for LOTS of milk crates now!! Thanks for sharing on the Pleasures of the NW’s DIY party! http://www.pleasuresofthenw.com/diy-party-no-7-lets-get-creative/

  36. I really love this! I love a grey and white combo, those 2 colors look great together. I can’t believe this was a blouse, the pattern is so great for a stool! It amazes me all the great things that you find in that basement! I wish I lived closer I would have a great time exploring it with you!

    • Mary says:

I amazes me too. You know for years I stayed away from that basement thinking it was full of junk. And it’s only since starting this blog that I’ve come to appreciate what I once thought of as “junk”. So if you come to visit me we’ll spend all our time in the basment instead of the beach… right?

  37. sherry cole says:

Now I really want to find me a metal crate. I love this, Mary, and I love the fabric that you used. Great job as usual!

    • Mary says:

I hope you do. I got really lucky with these. But at least you have yard and garage sales in the States. We don’t have them here.

  38. chellie says:

Wow! This is fabulous! So creative and I love the yellow! Thanks for sharing at FTAF!

  39. Tammie says:

    Love this!
