The View from the RailRoad Overpass

Sharing is caring!

Many of you know that I live in a town in Southern Greece.   Our farm is located right outside the town, which is situated on a plain between the Corinthian Bay and the mountains.  Lately there has been a lot of activity near the farm.  There is a new railroad being built and the station is located nearby.  I happened to visit the other day and instead of the usual road I saw a mountain of dirt that led up to an overpass that will eventually allow the traffic to go over the railroad tracks.

Well, I just had to sneak on up there to take some pictures because it was a once in a lifetime chance for me. Anyway once the road is finished, the vehicles will mar this pristine view.  This was my chance and I grabbed it.  I may have been trespassing just a little but we won’t tell!  Let’s walk up together and see the view from the railroad overpass.

This is the road leading up to the overpass.  As you can see the road is not completed yet.

When done, it will be a two lane road with sidewalks.

From its highest point you can see straight across the Corinthian Bay to mainland Greece.  And Delphi is somewhere over there too!

Now back to the top and we look to our right where the train tracks are being laid. This road leads to Athens which is the capital of Greece.  The railroad will extend from Athens to Patra which is the capital city of Peloponnese.

There are lots of lemon and orange farms here.  Along with Olive groves.

Looking to our left, you can see the town in the distance.

The mountains of Peloponnese are in the background.  The Peloponnese is a peninsula in Southern Greece which is separated from the central part of Greece by the Corinth Canal. A little bit of geography to give you some idea.

I love the way the clouds cast shadows on the road. A play of light and dark.

This is the railroad station that is under construction. It has been coming along for the past 4 years… I don’t even remember anymore. Haha!

It is very exciting to see all this construction going on in my “backyard.”  Things have been stagnant because of the never ending economic crisis, but this is obviously a step in the right direction.

Olive groves dot the landscape.

Turning back towards the entrance we see lots of dirt, obviously they still have a way to go till completion.

And just so we have some perspective, here is a  photo of the actual overpass taken from the ground.

I feel very lucky to have been able to see the view from the railroad overpass.  It is quite spectacular and needless to say the photos don’t do it justice. Thanks for joining me on this little escapade. What is your favorite view?

Mary, this was an exciting little trip you took us on, and even more exciting to have a railroad coming through. Your pictures are awesome!! That sky, wow!!!! That sky is so beautiful and breathtaking, and evokes an array of emotions just seeing it, very beautiful!!

  2. Leanna says:

Such a beautiful landscape, I cannot believe how blue the sea is in the background. You live in such a stunning part of the world, so much beauty and culture.

  3. Molly says:

4 years? That is pretty swift by Greek standards, they don’t like to rush things but in the heat of the summer you can understand that sentiment I think.

    • Mary says:

Hah Molly that is so true. But in fact we first heard about plans for this whole thing back in 2002. So you see although they have built the station in 4 years it is many more years in the making.

  4. Ruth says:

Nice views! Hope the train makes travels around Greece easier. #WordlessWednesday

  5. June says:

Wow, that’s quite a project going on there, Mary. Exceptional views! How awesome to have it all in your backyard! Thank you for sharing.

  6. I am always drawn into the clarity and beauty of your pictures. Thank you for sharing with us this week at Celebrate Your Story link party and have a great weekend.

  7. Amy says:

Beautiful, Mary! It’s not often (or ever?) that most of us would have the chance to see a railroad line being built. Thanks for sharing at Best of the Weekend!

  8. Debbie says:

Hi Mary, you do live in a beautiful part of Greece (is there a part of Greece that isn’t beautiful?). But I do feel for you as that construction is going to create some dust!
Your photos are lovely and I the view as cars go over the rise in the first two photos is going to be quite breathtaking (I love it when a view opens up before me, when driving).
I can’t pick a favourite view, as I’d enjoy all of them.
    xx

  9. Katie says:

I had the same thought about economic recovery for you. Your views are amazing. I hope all this doesn’t change the landscape for you too much.
Thanks for linking to Monday Social.

  10. I can’t believe this Mary! I am actually working in this railway project! We are laying the telecommunication cables! It’s quite amazing to witness the project’s process!

  11. It’s cold and rainy here today, had to stop back by and vicariously walk with you in the Greece sun. What a gorgeous set of photos. I feel warmer already!

  12. I always love seeing your photography Mary. It’s kinda sad to see your “backyard” will be getting a railroad but I’m certain the infrastructure is really helping the economy there. xo

  13. hi mary
what fabulous scenery. it looks so rustic and beautiful. we stayed in Delphi years ago at a little B&B place which overlooked the olive groves down to Corinth I think? there were so many trees it was gobsmacking. have a good week
    cheers

    • Mary says:

Sherry Delphi is really beautiful. So close to nature and the bay is right in front of you. I live on the other side of the bay. Much more populated but still pretty.

  14. We stayed in Athens and drove into the Peloponnese last summer, it’s lovely to see your photos and recognize the views, I must write up my time in Greece, it was so much fun and I can’t wait to go back.

  15. Jacqui Gray says:

Hi Mary, I loved this journey you took me on. My favourite picture is the view over the Corinthian Canal towards mainland Greece. Thank you!

  16. I love Corinthos! The olive trees are so beautiful there. Thanks for the post. Felt like I explored it with you. 🙂

  17. Pat says:

This was a fabulous opportunity to see all the work going on with the railroad and the views from the top of the overpass, Mary! You documented history in the making. Will the railway carry passenger trains as well as cargo trains?
I’ve been busy with Thanksgiving preparations this week and then decorating for Christmas will be happening soon after. It is a wonderful time of the year!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Mary says:

Pat this is a passenger train mostly. And not very big at that but it will cut down travel time to the city by half an hour.

  18. Great photos, Marie. I love the open blue sky.

  19. Katrin says:

It looks like there is quite a lot going on in your boondocks Mary, which is great these days… Your photos are always a wow factor and I enjoy them so much, what a beautiful countryside. I’ve said it before and I will say it again… I need to visit Greece!!! Well…you and Greece, lol!

  20. Molly says:

    Beautiful skies and scenery
    Mollyxxx

  21. It looks absolutely beautiful! So rich in beauty and history – keep your photos coming, Mary. The sections of railroad almost look like a miniature railroad from the high vantage point. I could just see you walking along looking over your shoulders every once in awhile. One day those photographs may become part of your town’s history – the making of the Athens railroad back in 2016 by American Expat, Mary Kalpos. ha ha ha

  22. Michelle says:

Wow, Mary your photos of the views are gorgeous. Glad you got some pics before it’s gone forever with the new railway. But as you said it’s a positive thing too. It shows progress and hopefully it will bring some trade to the area.

  23. Mary, what a gorgeous country you live in. I hope that the economic crisis will end, this could be paradise if things were set into order! I love all of it and hope to visit one day!

  24. It always amazes me how blue the sky is in Greece. It’s truly one of natures miracles, and it must be heaven to live there. I agree with Nikki…if only the economy was in order. Greece is on my bucket list. We’re hoping to get there in about two years. Can’t wait!

  25. Carol says:

Your photographs are beautiful as usual, Mary. The blue skies and white puffy clouds are like Florida. It’s one of the reasons I love living here. What definitely let’s me know it’s Greece are the mountains in the horizon. I miss mountains. They are glorious. Have a great day!

  26. Such an interesting post, fab photos and I love your new breaking and entering approach – can’t wait to see where you sneak in next, you know you’ll need to keep going to keep us all satisfied!

  27. Florence says:

So you live in Corinth Mary? Those are beautiful photos with sun, sea, & sky. I think I like the first photo best. It hints of adventure just over the hill.

  28. Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos. Love the views, and the sky and the little bit of water that I see in the distance is sooooo blue. Absolutely stunning!
