A DIY Photo Display for Father’s Day

Sharing is caring!

Father’s Day is next month!  To help you get ready, I’ve  come up with a fun DIY suggestions for dad’s day! As fathers get older they acquire a lot of “stuff”.  I don’t think they need more ties or beer mugs.  My suggestion is for a more personalized  gift and it involves wrapping it up (my favorite craft). A thoughtful DIY photo display for Father’s Day!

You may remember that I had found an old barbecue grill in my basement a while back.  I used parts of it to make a planter.

Well I had plenty more parts left over.  This time around I used the round metal rack parts. There were two of them which I spray painted black.

Then my alter ego, “The Twine Lady” took over and wrapped each grill.

And then joined them together.

Here is the result.  Of course it doesn’t look like much till I add…

…photographs. A photo display.  This makes it personalized and has special meaning for dad!

The mini clothespins give it a rustic touch that compliments the twine while making it super easy to change out the photographs.

Dad can hang this beauty of a photo display on his wall and just stare at our lovely mugs all day long!  Or if he’s mad at one of us, he can take the photo down. So much easier than frames!

Well, that is how I am wrapping it up for Father’s Day! As you can see it is an easy DIY with loads of charm and character because the Twine Lady made it.  And it has your mugs to boot!  What else could dad possibly ask for?

    • Mary says:

Amy I am so happy to hear that you found my idea useful. It really is a great way to display photos and so easy to change them out too. I’m sure you can use any time of racks as long as they have openings on them.

  25. What a cute idea! I love it! Pinning!

  26. Oh this is so cool! I wonder if I could just find these grill parts at a Goodwill or something! I like the circle a lot for this!

    • Mary says:

Hopefully you will be able to find old grills at a Goodwill or a yard sale. Good luck!

  27. I really liked your idea! This would be great for my fathers lab in our country house! I still though have no idea for my present this year!

    • Mary says:

Well, if you find any kind of grid you can do this project. It doesn’t have to be from a barbecue. Good luck on finding something and keep us posted.

  28. Baba says:

It never ceases to amaze me on all the different ideas people come up with. Great ideas.

  29. I just love your sense of humour, twine lady! You come up with the most clever ideas – love this idea! Pinning to share ☺

    • Mary says:

Thanks Marie. After I wrapped the storage unit last year, in my folly to be a great blogger and have the hardest project ever, I coined the term because I was dreaming about twine.

      • Thank you Mary for sharing your awesome and clever DIY BBQ Grill Picture Hanger with us at the DIY Sunday Showcase Party. It was one of my Top 6 Favs and I’ll be pinning it to our DIY Sunday Showcase Talent Board.

  30. Celeste says:

Mary, this is so creative! I’d have never thought to make decor from grill grates. Just when I think you can’t get any more creative, you go and do it again! This is so neat!

    • Mary says:

I see it as a challenge Celeste. I go to the basement and find something totally worthless and try to come up with an idea. I had this grill sitting in my hallway for half a year before I tackled it.

  31. So unique and so special. λαμπρός (I hope I said that right?)

    • Mary says:

Michelle you said it perfectly! Do you know any greek? I rely on Google translate a lot because I am far from perfect. In fact my kids are always making fun of me.

  32. Brilliant Mary , absolutely brilliant!!!!

    • Mary says:

Thank you so m uch Michelle, if you have made anything for Father’s Day, or link will be open all month . I’d love it if you added yours.

  33. Kim says:

You are truly the most creative person I know!! Amazing.

  34. Ivory says:

What a lovely idea. My son and I are so going to give this a try. I love it, thanks!

    • Mary says:

Ivory I love it when I can inspire others with mywacky ideas. Leet me know how it turns out.

  35. Krista says:

A great idea. I laughed when you mentioned that if he is mad he can just take the photo down. I was thinking even better he can turn the photo over. Then everyone will be looking for dads forgiveness so they can get there pic turned back over. Silliness

    • Mary says:

Haha! You are even funnier than me. I can just imagine all of us standing on tip toes to get back into his good graces.

  36. What a fabulous idea. I love it. Wrapping the twine took time but it is so worth it. I will have to add this on my must do list.

    • Mary says:

Debra I think for me twine wrapping is like when other women knit. It is my calming activity. I actually wrapped up a whole storage unit once. Back when I was a “new” blogger and feeling ambitious before reality set in.

  37. What a clever and unique idea, Mary! This is truly a wonderful Father’s Day gift to show off those cherished photos! And it’s very masculine looking, too!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Gail. It means a lot coming from you my friend. And yes, I tried to keep it from being shabby chic.

  38. Katrin says:

Love Love Love!!! It’s so clever and unique! But I wouldn’t expect anything else from you either Mary! A brilliant gift idea for any dad! I love the black & white photos!

  39. Sherry says:

i had to click and see what you could have made from the grill. Wow, I would not have thought something this great could come from a grill. Great job!

    • Mary says:

Thanks so much Sherry. I am trying to squeeze out all the projects I can from that old barbecue grill.

  40. Millie says:

what an awesome idea! I didn’t see where you were going till you added the pictures – what a surprise! How fun too – filling it up with memories and love!

    • Mary says:

That’s cause I like to keep you guessing. I t hink these are the best gifts the ones we give from the heart. And I’ll have my girls pick out the photos they want to add.

  41. Debbie says:

Hi Mary, I don’t know how you manage to come up with all these great upcycling ideas! I can’t imagine why people call you ‘The Twine Lady’ though!…Okay, maybe I do.
I have been laughed at for using twine to secure gifts, but I think it looks nice.
    xx

    • Mary says:

Debbie, I see all these ideas in my sleep…lol! I love the look of twine it is rustic and simple. I don’t get people who do not appreciate simple after all we live in the country and near the farmland.

  42. I found your site from the #sustainablesunday linkup. I really like the look of this I would have never guessed it came from a grill! I may have to see if I can find some to do this for me!

    • Mary says:

I hope you do find something like this. My box has so many pieces I am going to repurpose them all!

  43. So adorable. I love all those old pics, as well.

  44. CookieD-oh says:

What a fun idea for Dad! And I love all the great old pictures! #sustainablesundays

  45. Carol says:

Only you could come up with this great idea, Mary! This is totally awesome. You just shine with your creativity!

  46. Toni says:

Mary, wow I never would have thought to use those grates as a photo display, so awesome. And thank you for linking this to our very first Waste Not Wednesday link party. (http://www.smallhomesoul.com/waste-not-wednesday-link-party-1/).
So much inspiration, please come visit us again.

  47. Pili says:

Is there anything left from that barbecue to repurpose? If there’s something, I sure you will find a great use for it too as you did for the rack parts! It’s a great idea as a Father’s day gift, I am sure he liked it. Everything is better with twine.

    • Mary says:

Yes Pili there are still some more smaller pieces that I’m working on. I’ve got the girls picking out photos to add to it so it will be special for him.

  48. Mary, this is a great idea! And it looks great hanging on the wall. I love the modern lines and black color against the twine and the old photos! This is a perfect gift!
LOL, The Twine Lady? I’m The Mustache Lady, We make a great pair! xx

    • Mary says:

Thanks so much Nikki. I also love the co ntrast between the twine and the black. I have another one in my bedroom right above my desk that I use for easy access where I keep my lists, but that oneis white on twine. lol
And yes we do make a great pair! Hahaha… when I read your comment I burst out laughing and the kids were looking at me funny like.

  49. Keri says:

Mary, I just love this photo display !!! What a fantastic upcycle!! The twine was a particularly nice touch and those clothespins are great! I’m sure your husband will love his Father’s Day gift.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Keri, I will not rest till I use up all those pieces which are in the grill box… hahaha!

  50. Tania says:

This is so cool and a perfect gift for dad!!
    Tania

    • Mary says:

Thanks Tania, I’m sure he’ll like it and if he gets bored with our mugs he can cahnge it up.

  51. I love this! Such a great idea! I love creative ways to display photos.

    • Mary says:

Thanks T’onna. I’ve gotta use up all those grill pieces and this was one way.

  52. Heather says:

What a cool idea! Wouldn’t have thought of that in a million years!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Heather. I have made it my purpose to use up all those pieces in the BBQ grill. This was just one step toward that goal.
