How to add Color to your Home with Wreaths

So the other day my son looked at our front door and said “Christmas is…

So the other day my son looked at our front door and said “Christmas is over”  I laughed nervously at him and said “Yes, but this is a winter wreath you see here“  I had removed the “Merry Christmas” part and so it looked plenty wintry to me.  He just gave me a skeptical look.  Truth be told, it is still winter outside, I even had to shovel snow yesterday. But he got me thinking that what I needed was a change in attitude.

So for this month’s Ten on the Tenth I’ve decided to make a new Spring wreath for the front door.  The theme is, things that we love to decorate with all the time.

And for those of you wondering what Ten on the Tenth is well, it is a group of us blogging friends who get together on this day to share a project with you, one that costs us less then ten dollars.  Last month we talked about Spring projects and the month before we shared Valentine’s Day ideas.

If you have followed me any length of time you know I love my wreaths.  In fact they have a page all of their own.  But all of those wreaths, except for the one mentioned above, are in Greece.  So it is time to make a new one for my new home.

What I used:

  • Wire wreath form from the Dollar Tree
  • 2 white flower bunches from the Dollar Tree
  • One spool of ribbon on sale at Michael’s for $4
  • One bunch of yellow tulips also from Michael’s for $2

I also used a few things I had at home

  • some twine
  • a transparent ribbon
  • a red bird figurine

The How to:

This was a pretty easy wreath to make and it took me about 5 minutes.

The first step was to wrap the chambray ribbon with the lace around the wreath form. I just tucked the ends into the back, no glue needed. I really love that ribbon, it actually came like that with the lace on top of the chambray.

I then took the two white flower bunches and bent them into curved shapes.  I tucked the bottoms into the ribbon  so the flowers would be in opposite directions.

In order to place the yellow tulips in the center I also bend them and tucked them into the ribbon.  But then I pulled them and arranged them so they would spread all around.

However this can be tricky at times because the plastic stems will not stay bent.  In this case I took a piece of transparent ribbon I already had, and wound it around the bottom of the wreath.  This serves to separate the flowers and keep them in place so they look like a fan.

And because I wanted to add a bit of a rustic touch I wound a piece of twine all around over the chambray part of the ribbon.

And the final addition, a small felt bird that I happened to have around the house.

Nothing brings a smile to my face like a pretty wreath on the front door of the house!  It doesn’t have to be fancy, and it certainly doesn’t have to cost a lot as I have just shown with this simple wreath.  In fact I spent about 9 dollars on this one.  And because nothing has been glued down I can reuse all the materials on future projects.

Once I hung it up on the door I made sure to show it to my son, the skeptic and say “See here, the wintry wreath is gone!”  Just so he’ll know that I actually pay attention to his grumblings.

I make wreaths every chance I get and feel this is a simple and fun way to decorate.  I’ve made some silly wreaths in my time which I’d rather forget.  But my favorite wreath has to be this one that was made with items from mother nature herself. And the cost…zero!

  1. Oh no, snow doesn’t sound like fun this time of year! But your wreath will get Spring here immediately I bet! Such a lovely wreath and I love that ribbon!! I hope it gets warmer there soon Mary!

    1. Katrin the only thing for sure is that there are no rules around here when it comes to the weather. But that makes for a very exciting life. Haha!!

  2. Hi Mary, Wreaths are one of the things I don’t have talent for.. I envy how you can put together the pieces and have pretty display for your front door! It’s beautiful here in FL and very spring-like which makes me want a pretty wreath all the more! Pinned 🙂

    1. I hope you are enjoying your spring weather Wendi. All I can hope for is some rays of chilly sun and those tulips to warm me up. But I’m not complaining.

  3. Hi Mary, As you know those Greek winds can be pretty strong and just last week toppled another of my planted ceramic pots so I know if I put a wreath on my door in the Mani it would likely end up somewhere in your old neck-of-the-woods. But you so tempted me with this one that I might just have to make one and hang it inside the house!! Loved this! xxx Jackie

    1. Jackie I know all about those Greek winds. I used to place the wreaths indoors as well for that reason. I usually had one over the fireplace. It was the perfect spot for it.

  4. Mary, I always love seeing the wreaths you create, and this one is gorgeous and looks just like spring! Have a great weekend!

  5. Hi Mary, I feel for you! How are you coping with the long winter? I’ve not stopped moaning about ours this year. Maybe your pretty spring wreath will encourage a little warmth? Yellow is the colour of spring afterall… Weren’t you tempted (just a little?) to add a Seasons Greetings sign to the wreath too?

    xx

    1. Debbie you are so funny. If I put Season’s Greeting on there I’m be right back in the middle of winter. The idea is to get out of winter. Haha!! The truth is I really miss spring because it was the best time of the year for me. All those fragrant flowers in the streets and all of nature putting on it’s finest for us.

  6. Very pretty! We still have snow on the ground too but it is warm and rainy today and I’m hopeful it will all melt soon. Pinned.

    1. Thanks so much Donna, Wreaths, really do make a statement! Especially on the front door!

  7. Oh, he definitely can’t complain about this one being Christmassy. I love it! The addition of the red bird is perfect – it brings all of the colors together so well! And I love that you didn’t use any glue, and therefore, can change it up when you’re ready. Gorgeous, as always!

    1. Amy I am feeling a change coming on. Now if only that snow would go away and I can make a new wreath for spring!

  8. Pretty spring wreath for under $10. It is amazing that you could make this for that price. Budget friendly can be pretty.
    Happy Crafting, Kippi

    1. It certainly can Kippi and since we are always switching our decor out it is a necessity!

  9. Ha ha, blokes just don’t understand home decor sometimes do they?!! Obviously it was a winter wreath!
This spring one is super pretty though 🙂

    1. Thanks Julie. All this decorating stuff is bewildering to my sons. Sometimes my daughters don’t get it either. Haha!
