A few weeks ago I went to the big city, about an hour away from my town. This city has an open air market that is huge. In Greek we call it the “Laiki” market. It comes from the word “Laiki” which means popular or for the people. Come with me as we go shopping at the market.
The People’s market goes on for block and blocks. It has practically anything you could want. Aside from fruits, vegetables with hundreds of stalls, there are fish vendors…
…there is a multitude of other things for sale…
…in an assortment of colors.
Pink shoes anyone?
Θέλετε ροζ παπούτσια;
Slippers for a euro?
Παντόφλες για ένα ευρώ;
The People’s market is always open on its designated day. When it rains we all huddle under the canvas awnings. In the summertime they provide shade from the sun. Is that an authentic Dior?
Η Λαϊκή αγορά είναι πάντα ανοικτή στις καθορισμένες ημέρες. Όταν βρέχει όλοι μαζευόμαστε κάτω από τις τέντες καμβά.Το καλοκαίρι παρέχουν σκιά από τον ήλιο. Αυτό είναι ένα αυθεντικό Dior;
Plastic containers or rugs, you decide!
How about yarn for crafting?
Νήματα για πλέξιμο;
Streets full of fabric selections. I think I’ll stay here a while.

Clasps for curtains.
Are these airplane seats outside? Let’s sit here awhile and catch our breaths.
Depending on the size of the city the People’s market can be big or small. In my small town, it’s only a few blocks long. I usually shop for the fresh fruits and veggies, but sometimes I can also find a great bargain in shoes (not the pink ones). We can always count on the Laiki to be opened on its designated day! Do you have anything similar in your area and what do you shop for?
Ανάλογα με το μέγεθος της πόλης, η λαϊκή αγορά μπορεί να είναι μικρή ή μεγάλη. Στη μικρή μου πόλη, είναι μόλις λίγα τετράγωνα. Συνήθως ψωνίζω για τα φρέσκα φρούτα και λαχανικά, αλλά μερικές φορές βρίσκω καλές ευκαιρίες στα παπούτσια (όχι αυτά τα ροζ). Μπορούμε πάντα να υπολογίζουμε στη λαϊκή να ανοίξει στις καθορισμένες ημέρες της! Έχετε κάτι παρόμοιο στην περιοχή σας και τι ψωνίζετε;

Mary, this looks fun! The shoe photo is a real attention grabber–love it! Thank you for sharing @Vintage Charm!
Cecilia thanks for putting up with my crazy photos! 😉
What a fun market Mary! I would be there all the time if I had one near me! I definitely wouldn’t mind taking a closer peak at those rugs, some look like Pottery Barn knock offs:). Hope your week is going well. Take care, Tara
Tara, it wouldn’t surprise me if everything was a knock-off..lol. But it is fun to browse and find bargains.
Mary your photos whisked me straight back to our European cruise last year. You guys know how to MARKET…lol! Thanks for sharing at Five Star Frou this week. Love, Mimi xxx
That we do Mimi, no malls for us here. We are pretty traditional when it comes to shopping. xxx
Αυτη εδώ εχει τα πάντα. Πραγματικα κουραζομαι να ψωνίζω εκεί γιατί τι θα πρώτο κουβαλήσεις τα λαχανικά η όλα τα άλλα που εμείς οι μπλογκερ θέλουμε;
What an eclectic mix of different things you can buy at the big market. The aeroplane seats are very odd there. We have local farmers markets, which I love buying bits and pieces at.

Those plane seats are for folks who get tired of shopping, but yes it is an odd place to have them.
Love these photos! What a fun walk through your market. 🙂 The airplane seats cracked me up!!
It was fun to walk through. Too bad the photos don’t convey the character of the vendors who were shouting for our attention.
Wow! That is a huge market and they have such a variety of stuff to buy! In my hometown (Baltimore, MD), We have a huge market like that every Saturday right in a huge parking lot on Martin Blvd. I haven’t been there in years but we could find all sorts of things there. We considered it our big weekly yard sale. In the town I live in now, it is considerably smaller so they only throw certain markets. We have the farmer’s market that is on Saturdays in the Amherst Common but other markets are held only certain times of the year, usually in the Summer and the Fall. Thanks so much for linking up with #manicmonday
Michelle this one takes place every Thursday come rain or shine. There are other smaller ones that take place on other days but they are more farmers markets. This one has practically everything.
We have a tiny little one street market that is mostly fruit and vegetables. I think if it were relocated they would do so much better.
Stella this one is too huge and exhausting. I went one time and I was so weighed down by the fruits and veggies… can you imagine carrying watermelon around?? Better tiny than huge.
Fun!! Growing up there were a number of flea markets open in our area. They were housed in giant arenas and sold everything from candy to jewelry and were super cheap! I loved going there with friends and spending the day. They are long gone now…
They are so much fun, and they have an old world charm that the malls lack.
This looks like so much fun to visit!
Thanks for sharing at Funtastic Friday!
It is loads of fun, if you are just looking, but if you shop for food then you have to carry it around. lol
This looks awesome! Thanks so much for sharing and for linking up with The Alder Collective. Hope to see you again this week!
Thank you Cristi. It’s a lot of fun to browse such a big market.
Strolling through markets is such a fun thing to do. Thanks for taking us on this little tour and showing us a bit of your home area!
Thank you Ilka for taking the stroll with me. I love browsing these markets, they are full of ideas.
Slippers for a euro look good to me! Thanks for linking up today!
I usually only frequent fruit and vegie markets but loved the hustle and bustle of a market I visited in Kavala. So many things to tempt! I couldn’t resist a little pair of earrings, light and adding nothing to the weight of my suitcase. I still love them, they bring so many happy memories.
Pink desert boots? I normally hate pink, and even though those wouldn’t charm my money out of my pocket, but there’s something about how improbably the combination is that makes me like them.
It would take me forever to get through it all. I would want to stop and look at everything. Love the toys and yarn…oh and the scarves! I imagine there were books there too! Very fun place to walk!
What an incredible variety of items for sale!
What a colorful way to shop.
Now you have me dreaming.
Those kind of markets are amazing – we don’t really get them here with all the fresh food that peoople buy daily…
Oh, the yarn looks lovely!
…Looks like you are buy just about everything!
That market looks like so much fun Mary, even the pink shoes 😉 My Mom would love a pair of those. I think I could spend hours browsing around there. A few towns here in South Africa have street markets, but it’s mostly for tourists rather than the locals. We do have lots of flea markets though, but if memory serves me correctly, you have them in Greece too?
No flea markets where I lived Michelle. We have lots of these types of street markets though which have loads of treasures.
Market is so popular in Asia. But in my hometown, I’ve never seen it before,:D
These types of markets are very popular here in Greece.
Markets are the best and lucky you living in Greece. I have always dreamed of living there one day
Mollyxxx
Molly we have seen better days here, but at least we have this beautiful land and sun and sea to keep us going.
A shopper’s delight!
Thanks for sharing at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2016/04/this-is-what-hope-looks-like.html. The new linkup will be open in a few hours as well!
Thanks for the visit. I am on my way!!
Wow, I would stay here for hours! What a great market. Your photos really show it off well.
I know what you mean every time I go I end up buying too much stuff. Thank you for dropping by!
How beautiful and how fun! I’d love to browse in a market like that! We have flea markets in the Midwest USA. They are mostly filled with junk but one can find useful and interesting treasures. For fresh produce and homemade food goodies we have Farmers Markets. I love to pick up my fruits and veggies there.
#sensisal
Mary, isn’t the market great?? Your market looks so familiar, because in our town, and actually in all the towns around as well, this kind of market exists as well, how cool is that! Where we live it’s every Tuesday and there are great things to find! It’s called the gypsy market here (mercado de los gitanos)! The shoes there are actually made in Spain and really good quality! I always find real nice ones for my girls 😉 (even pink sometimes…)
Katrin the market is one of my favorite places to shop. If you know what you want you can find some really good quality things there. We also have the gypsies that sell a lot of clothing and shoes. Ours is on Saturday.
What an interesting blog you have! I would love to visit Greece one day. The closest thing to this we have in my area is something called First Monday. It doesn’t take place on a Monday but rather the first weekend of the month. Not sure why it is called first Monday ?!?!
Renee, you are cordially invited! We have no thirift shops or yard sales but we do have this! I guess this kind of makes up for it, but no furniture for sale.
how fun and colorful! I can’t believe you didn’t want the pink shoes 🙂 we have a weekend farmers market and craft market here and in Raleigh they have the farmers market w/a few shops and restaurants and at the fair grounds a flea market. Lots of great bargains and maybe some pink shoes!
When I get dressed up for the carnival I may need some pink shoes but for now I’ll pass…lol
Wow, that looks to be a fun day in the big city! I’m still trying to figure out how in the heck you find the matching shoe on that pile of single shoes on the table. They should call that table the “Cinderella Table” with a good looking Greek Prince Charming to find the matching shoe for you. LOL
Marie, you should see the stalls that don’t have pink shoes, they only have black shoes – now try finding a matching pair there. The vendors are usually gypsies and they don’t help. For the price of the shoes (usually 5 to 10 euros) no one will help you, not even Prince Charming.
That was fun. Such a selection of items for sale. Boston has a nice outdoor market but nothing compared to what you showed us. Obviously you have to go prepared to browse!
Yes Krista, either you go to browse or if you are a regular you know what you want and go to that specific area. This market goes on for blocks and blocks and winds around blocks. I get lost half the time..lol
Good Morning Mary…I so enjoy your photos and details that enable me to take a virtual tour of your town and country. Visiting markets is one of my favorite things to do when visiting other cities. In Munich we went to the Viktualienmarkt and and Vienna is was the Naschmarkt.
You are so good about taking your camera with you everywhere you go…I need to get better about that.
Wishing you a very happy Monday and a wonderful week.
Hugs, Lynn
Lynn you are a seasoned traveler. I also love to explore different things when I’m outside. I find that when I take the camera I see things in a different way. A new way of seeing old ordinary things if you will. Make sure you take yours with you next time you go out on a leisurely stroll, and you’ll be surprised at what you notice when looking through the lens.

I do like a good market and yours looks fantastic. Thank you for sharing on #Overthemoon
Jennifer, just walking around it is exhausting, never mind having to carry all of the things you buy.
Mary, we have open air flea markets, although the place where I have my booth is a combination of many different vendors who offer all kinds of things but nothing on the scale that you show. It looks like you need several days to go through it. What fun you must have shopping.
Hi Debra! It really is huge and the last time I was there I got tired from carrying all the veggies. Also we had to park far away because so many people go to this market. But I also like to go and just browse.
Mary, I’m going shopping with you!! I saw lots of things that I would be tempted to buy if I were there!! The fabric…yes please!! And all that yarn!! 🙂 So many pretty things!! Thank you for taking all of us along on your day through the market!! It looks like so much fun!!
It’s great fun. They always have nice things for us DIYers. And I didn’t even show you the fruits and veggies. That would have to be another post all by itself.
I have been to many open markets around the world but I believe this is the largest I have seen. Has this one been affected by the Greek economic difficulties?
Aletha thanks for your comment. Yes unfortunately they all have been affected by the crisis. The prices of the produce fluctuate depending on the location of the markets. The one in my town has reasonable prices because I live in a farming area. As for the other merchandise the quality has gone down simply because the vendors cannot find products to sell. In the town about half of all the shops have closed. Things are only gettting worst.
Oh my goodness, Mary, you are so lucky to have this great market near you! How do you not spend all day there? The markets are really my favorite thing about other countries. I bet they have really fresh produce, and that fish looks fresh off the boat. Yum yum!
Celeste, it’s a good thing it’s not too near. Because I’d have no money left at all. We have a much smaller market in my town, where we go for fruits and vegetables.
I love markets! We are just in the process of thinking about taking a year off to travel. Greece is definitely on my list and I might have to pick your brain about where to stay and places to visit. I bet I could wonder at this market for hours 🙂
Jenna that’s a great idea. We have sunshine and clear waters here, and you will love the food. I’ll be happy to give any suggestions you need.
Wow this is awesome! I wish we had one of these here in Georgia! I’d probably buy a lot. lol I’m glad I found your blog on the #Waywow Linky Party! Pinning
Thanks Jody! I’m glad I don’t live too near this particular market because I’d be unable to resist the temptation.
I saw a couple thing I’d like to buy! I saw some fabric, a couple pillows, and a pair of shoes! 🙂
T’onna, the shoes are something else. There are at least 10 tables full of shoes. And some have all one color shoes. How do we ever find a pair??
Mary,
I love coming to your blog because I never know what I will find! I enjoyed visiting the market thru your eyes. Wish I could say we had something like this near us! We have many farmer’s markets, but nothing quite as fun as this! Thanks for sharing with us at Brag About It!
~Laurie
Laurie, I try to shake things up a bit and keep it interesting. This one is a farmers market plus all the other things. I didn’t show the food because I figured everyone has seen that.
Mary, we have some fun Farmer’s Markets in the warm weather, but yours looks like so much fun. The rugs, fabric, Pink shoes, fun for everyone! Do you fish for your own, or do you buy it? Do you eat a lot of fish???
Nikki, I hardly ever buy fish. My husband got a boat a few years ago and he spends every free minute in the water fishing. It is his happy place. But the funny thing is I don’t particularly like fish. I try to eat it once in a while. I really like the squid, cuttle fish and octopus that he catches though!
That’s so funny, I was wondering if you were fishermen. I love to fish and I haven’t found one yet that I haven’t enjoyed. I have never had cuttle fish though. What’s it like?
That looks like an amazing market! I love shopping at the markets of other cities. That fabric street would be dangerous for my wallet.
Vineta, I have to agree with you about the fabric streets.. plural which makes them all the more dangerous.
I love that market Mary! I could spend hours and hours wandering there, the airplane seat is so funny!! And the fish is so cheap!!
Of course the fish is cheap Pili. The city is right next to the water. But there is so much more. There are streets and streets of vegetables and fruits that I didn’t show.
Oh, I would love to walk through that market! I kinda like the pink suede shoes! We have a Public Market in the city nearest me and it is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday year round, rain or shine. It is best in the summer when the fruits and veggies are local.
Oh we have plenty of fruits and veggies all year long. But this particular market has lots of other fun stuff too.
