A Summer Tour of the Balcony Part One – Ξενάγηση του Μπαλκονιού  Πρώτο Μέρος

I have been busy this past month cleaning out the balcony and DIYing all sorts…

I have been busy this past month cleaning out the balcony and DIYing all sorts of little projects to make it functional and beautiful. Finally I am ready to show  you what it all looks like put together. And so here is a tour of the balcony, part one.  Because it is way too big to show you in one sitting.

To see Part Two of the Balcony tour simply click here.

In the past few years the balcony has gone through some changes.  We live in a house that is on a major street, so during the day there is a lot of noise and the houses are also pretty close to each other. In order to combat this we installed a piece of plywood  to act as a screen.  It blocks the view from across the street and cuts down on the noise.  You can see our first attempt below and the details here.

It was a good solution but we felt we needed more, because let’s face it that flimsy bamboo fence was not doing the trick. We added two more plywood pieces. I covered them with vinyl. They create an outdoor room. And I get to use them as a backdrop for photographing my projects.

At one end of the balcony, we have some tall plants that will not die despite my best efforts.  I added an umbrella there to keep the sun and heat to a minimum. The repurposed milk crate as stool is in the front. To see what this corner looked like last year click here.

I have placed my  repurposed nautical lantern on top of a planter. I killed off the plant so why not use it this way. And I carry over the idea of the rocks onto the other planter. The blue fabric you see behind is actually a shower curtain that I’ve  put there to cut down on that glaring sun.

Hanging from the umbrella is the versatile saucer that holds tealights, it was originally a grill part.

The white metal table has a set of chairs which I’ve covered in the same fabric as the balcony screen.

Here you see the corner with the sun shining brightly.  The glass doors are pretty but not at all practical since they act like a hothouse in the summer. The  great thing about the balcony is that there is usually a breeze so that really helps us to stay cool.

This olive oil barrel which was redone last year serves as a side table.

The daybed is actually a folding cot. I simply covered it with a duvet and secured one end on the window sill with a piece of wood folded under the fabric.

Of course we need to have lots of pretty colorful pillows to put us in the summer mood.

Looking down the length of the balcony you can see the bay and mountains on the other side.

Who is going to notice my dead plants when I have a view like that?

Ποιος θα παρατηρήσετε τα νεκρά φυτά μου, όταν έχω τετοια θέα;

The cherry plums are from the farm and look really great next to the flowers.

I was able to create a fun and pretty balcony with just things found in the basement. One thing that I did not mention is that my balcony wraps around three sides of the house.  Next  time I’ll show you the rest and some more spectacular views .  I hope that you have enjoyed the Summer tour of the balcony.  What was your favorite part?

Δημιούργησα ένα διασκεδαστικό και όμορφο μπαλκόνι με απλά πράγματα που βρέθηκαν στο υπόγειο. Κάτι που δεν ανέφερα είναι ότι το μπαλκόνι συνεχίζεται στις τρεις πλευρές του σπιτιού. Την επόμενη φορά θα σας δείξω το υπόλοιπο με εκπληκτική θέα. Ελπίζω ότι έχετε απολαύσει τη ξενάγηση του μπαλκονιού. Ποιο ήταν το αγαπημένο σας κομμάτι;

    1. Thank you Stacey and I would love to have you join me for an iced tea or a cold coffee.

  5. I love the thought of laying on the balcony on the daybed with the breezes coming through. I really like your mild crate table as well! Thanks so much for showing the view. I am fascinated with Greece and loved seeing the mountains and water!

    1. I am happy that you were able to visit Melony! The view of course is the best part. I also do photo essays on the blog all about Greece.

  6. Morning Mary,
I actually got here before noon after all! Your balcony looks so inviting and so much space to enjoy in the shade that you made! Your view is amazing…but the fruit? I thought it was peaches but probably not…that looks so yummy.

    1. We do have peaches at the farm but these are actually cherry plums. They are a bit different, a bit hardier with a sour taste. They sure do look pretty tho gh,

  7. Oh Mary! This is so beautiful and homey!! I just want to curl up on that daybed and enjoy that view! I love your umbrella and all your pretty pillows!! I don’t think anyone will notice your dying plants, lol! Thank you so much for sharing with us at TaDa Thursday!!

    1. Haha Susanne. I don’t even notice them anymore. With this heat it is hard to keep them alive.

  8. Oh wow Mary, it’s such a lovely inviting space and it’s difficult to choose a favorite, but it’s probably the re-purposed milk crates. Love them both. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the balcony space looks like and the view of the mountains is gorgeous.

    1. That view Michelle is what keeps me in Greece. There is nothing like getting up in the morning and looking outside.

  9. WOW Mary!! You have been super busy! I love all the touches you have added to your balcony! I’m sure that you will have many lovely times ahead out there!! Your view is amazing!!!! Thank you for sharing over with us at Waste Not Wednesday! 🙂

    1. We use our balcony a lot. We have all our meals outside and in the evening we light the tealights and enjoy the breeze.

  10. Mary, I love that your patio goes around 3 sides of your home, I bet that when it’s not so hot that it’s a great place to spend your time. I bet the glass doors did bring a lot of heat into the house, ours did too until Bruce built the pergola, the shade helps a lot, so I can imagine that all the things you’ve done help to cool off the inside too.
My favorite part are the views, so gorgeous. You can’t pay for that! Love it. My second favorite is the picture of the flowers and the cherry plums against the striped material. Love that color combo!
And next, I love that almost everything in the area is something that you have made. That makes it so much more special, cozy and inviting. xx

    1. This thing with the balcony on three sides is a blessing and a curse Nikki. Honestly I could have used more indoor space. The balcony can only be used at certain times of the day. In the morning we use the part that I showed you and in the afternoon when the sun has shifted we switch over to the other side where it has cooled down a bit. It’s a bit like playing musical chairs…lol.

  11. Such a clever idea, Mary, to put up an attractive sound and privacy barrier. Your balcony looks like a wonderful retreat for your family 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up your posts at Vintage Charm!

    1. Thank you Diana. We look at it as our sanctuary since we live in the center of town next to a major road.

  12. I would never leave this balcony, Mary! And, oh, that view! Thanks so much for sharing at Best of the Weekend!

  13. I love your view. I can imagine myself laying on the daybed with a good book reading all day long, reaching over to the crate table, which I also love for my glass of water. I would never get anything done if I had your balcony since it looks so comfortable and relaxing.

    1. Debra if I didn’t have the blog that is where I’d be all day. Sometimes I go and sleep there in the morning when it is nice and breezy…and quiet.

  14. Hi Mary, you are so creative. The ideas you come up with are very practical and useful. I love how you created private in your space. Here in the U.S. I am always seeking ways to maintain privacy especially in our outdoor space. My husband and I just finish building our pergola. By the way, I think some of your hot temps are headed our way, because the weather man said starting tomorrow we will start getting 90 degree temps and going up to triple digits. Stay cool!!!

    1. Ivory thank you so much for your sweet words. It may not be picture perfect but it works for me. And since I have a small budget I am able to get really creative. I definitely think we sent the heat to you because we now have cooler weather.

  15. Mary, y’all have done a lot of clever and effective things to block out the sun! I know it’s intense in your part of the world. That umbrella turned on its side like that ought to do the trick. I see those beautiful plums too! We used to have a wild plum tree growing up. It had the best little plums! They were always full of worms though. Ha! I’m sure I’ve eaten many a worm…LOL.
Now I see a lovely plant too. Try not to kill it Mary!

    1. Florence it gets crazy hot in my neck of the woods. Even with a breeze because I’m on the third floor, it still gets hot. That one plant you saw is probably dead now. Lol!!
