Greek Beach Table – Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge

Sharing is caring!

Here we are again for our Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge.  I really enjoy doing this challenge. It gives me the chance to show off my country and also admire my fellow blogger’s countries. Last month, we talked about shopping and the month before about Spring Flowers. In fact I have all of our challenges here. This month we decided to do something a little different.  We are doing furniture makeovers. This is the most natural topic for us since we are all involved in some form of home decorating or upcycling. This month I am saving a “Greek Beach table” from certain boredom.

I chose this old table to makeover. I have had it for many, many years. It does not speak to me at all – aside from the dust – the dust speak to me, but that is a subject for another post!   The legs of the table are made of wood.

However,  the top is  laminate over particle board.  It looked awful. I washed it down with vinegar and detergent.

I have been itching to try chalk paint on laminate furniture and this was my chance. I have not been compensated for this product in any way but I do love it and that is why I share it  with you.   I painted the legs four coats of DecoArt Americana in everlasting (which is a white).

The top was painted in exactly the same way.  The first coat was a grey color Deco Art Americana Chalky Paint Primitive. I used  it as a primer and I did not sand the table.

When it came time to do the subsequent coats I decided to change things up a bit.  After all, this is an Int’l Bloggers Club Challenge.  I wanted to incorporate something having to do with Greece and so I painted it blue. I mixed an acrylic blue into the chalky paint and ended up with the color you see here.

Mixing the paint, Greek Beach Table - Int'l Bloggers Club Challenge theboodocksblog.com
But I wanted to go darker still and so I added more blue to the third and fourth coats.  And then it was time to seal all this blue in.  I used the Americana decor creme wax.  You just apply and then when it is dry about a minute later you buff. Again there was no sanding throughout this whole process which I really liked a lot!

And my ugly table is transformed.

A few left over bottles were painted with the chalky paint and I had a perfect vignette for the beachy vibe I was after.

I enjoy collecting driftwood from the beach and using it for decorating around the house.

I let the table cure for about a week before putting anything on it and now it is as hard as nails.

And so my “Greek Beach Table” is done. But I’ve already got some more ideas for this little beauty.  Stay tuned!

I have since added ombre beachy chairs to the mix.  Check them out here.

  1. This looks fabulous Mary! Love the color you mixed. We are alike, I’m always tweaking the colors of the paint I get. Yes, the DecoArt paints are awesome and the Creme Wax is tough too! I’ve used it on my son’s dresser set and he hasn’t been able to chip or ruin it yet!

    • Mary says:

Wendi, I’m so sorry it took me so long to reply. I love this brand, it is reasonably priced and it delivers. I am very happy with the outcome.

  2. Cheryl says:

Wow, I love it!! What a difference the paint made and I love those colors!!

  3. Mary – This table turned out beautifully! I love the color and the lovely, smooth finish after the wax. Thanks for the info about Americana chalk paint. Your driftwood collection looks great on the aqua blue surface. We went across the Aegean on a small cruise ship 2 years ago and stopped at many of the islands. It’s hard to describe how gorgeous Greece is.

    • Mary says:

It’s funny Carol but I have embraced all these Greek colors the last few years. Before my house was full of burgundy and beige. But now every time I look out the window I feel inspired. I’m sure you understand where these colors are coming from since you went to the islands.

  4. Claire says:

Wow what an improvement and it matches the chairs that you painted last week!

    • Mary says:

Lucky for me Claire because I did this table a year ago and the chairs just a few weeks ago. Everything is slowly coming into place.

  5. Amber Harrop says:

I love the colour of the table they remind me of Greece too – lovely Mary

  6. Lucy Blossom says:

I love it, such an amazing transformation

  7. Julie says:

This is just beautiful Mary, the blue is beautiful. What a great way to modernise a very plain old table.

    • Mary says:

Julie to think I had been living with that plain old table for years before I took up blogging. Blogging really does transform us and makes us try new things. I never would have dared to try this project before.

  8. You won’t believe this, but I’ve been thinking of painting my dining room table exactly like that! Looks great! Thanks so much for sharing at the Submarine Sunday Link Party!! I hope you’ll stop by again soon!

    • Mary says:

That’s a great idea. I love this color it came out so much better than I expected T’onna!

  9. I have not tried chalk paint yet! But this transformation is incredible. The table was looking old and dated. It’s completely new and fun now! It looks great and I’m sure that ‘s its made the entire room look lighter and brighter. The addition of the painted bottles, twine and driftwood really completes the look. I really love it! How do you find time to get all this done? I am amazed!

    • Mary says:

It ws so old and dated Nikki that it was disappearing from boredom. And that fake top did it no good. I figured if it is laminate why not go for it. Chalk paint is really much easier to use than I thought. When you try some you’ll let me know what your thoughs are. And the brand I used is not expensive. Not like some other brands which break the bank.

  10. Toni says:

I love Greece and hope to make it there someday. The colors of this table are such a great representation, it turned out fantastic! Thank you for linking it to our Waste Not Wednesday link party. (http://www.smallhomesoul.com/waste-not-wednesday-link-party-1/).
I’ve only tried chalk paint one time and I love to see how other people use it on their projects.
    Please visit us again.

    • Mary says:

I’ve been using it for a whie now, it’s hard to come by where I live in the boondocks but a girl’s gotta have chalk paint. haha! Thank you Toni!

    • Mary says:

  12. Debbie says:

Hi Mary, you certainly did achieve your aim. It looks so much better than it did before and it’s definitely got a Greek vibes about it. Love the way you decorated it too.
    xx

    • Mary says:

Thanks Debbie. I am so glad to have gotten rid of that boring brown. It really lifts my spirits.

  13. beautifully done. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things link party. Pinned and watch for your feature tomorrow xo

  14. Helen Fern says:

The colors really surprised me, they are much fun and vibrant than I thought it would turn out.

  16. Mimi says:

Mary, this is what I imagine Greece to be. Blue and white and fresh and lovely! Thanks for sharing at Five Star Frou-Frou this week. Love, Mimi xxx

  17. Leanna says:

Blue and white says Greece to me. Love you colour choice on this table. I have to redo my kitchen set sometime this year, care to come and help??? Thanks for the instructions.

    • Mary says:

I’ll be right over Leanna! Although you don’t need any help, you are a master at whatever you tackle.

  18. Still love how your table turned out, Mary! This beachy vignette is lovely…
    Summer hugs,
    Barb 🙂

  19. Love it, awesome transformation! Pinned ♥ If you’re not aware, I have a new UNLIMITED Monthly Link Party! I’d like to invite you to bring this post and more over and linkup with everyone.

  20. Cecilia says:

Thanks for sharing your lovely table at Vintage Charm!

  21. Crissy says:

This turned out so well, Mary! I love the color combination. Thanks for sharing at Tuesday Turn About!

  22. Mother of 3 says:

That is really pretty and I love that it didn’t require sanding; I typically loose interest in a furniture makeover once I realize I need to sand.

    • Mary says:

I too am very lazy when it comes to furniture redo’s and always look for the easy way out.

  23. deb says:

Absolutely gorgeous! Love, love, love the colors! Awesome job!
    *hugs*deb

  24. Cindy says:

I love how the table turned out! So fresh and pretty. The white and blue together create a very beachy vibe!

    • Mary says:

Thank you Cindy, I used to live near a beach so this was the perfect table for that area.

  25. Sylvia says:

What a beautiful transformation! I love your color choices. I have a table I am thinking about updating as well and now I have great idea! Found you at the Busy Monday 371 party

    • Mary says:

Thank you Sylvia. I really find that blue is such a calming color and I have slowly gravitated towards it.

  26. Maria says:

What a beautiful job! I have a similar table, but not sure if I wanted to paint mine.A few years ago I would but I may keep it stained.

    • Mary says:

That is a great option too Maria. Mine was laminate on the top and looked awful with those scratches.

  27. Diana says:

Beautiful job, Mary! I recently used DecoArt chalky paint on a laminated table and it worked beautifully–no sanding for me either! Thanks for linking up your posts with us at Vintage Charm 🙂

    • Mary says:

Diana I love this paint. I can’t see spending a small fortune for paint if I can make do with something more reasonable. And it does the job!

  28. Kathleen says:

Such a lovely transformation, Mary! I’ll be featuring you at tomorrow’s Vintage Charm Party #85! xo Kathleen|Our Hopeful Home

  29. Love the colors you painted your table and how you styled it. Just lovely. Thank you for sharing at the Snickerdoodle Create~Bake~Make link party! I am featuring your beautiful table tomorrow at Snickerdoodle.

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Sharon. This table was the start of what has now become the makeover for the whole space.

  30. Tania says:

It turned out great Mary! I have a round mid-century coffee table that has a laminate top. I was thinking of painting it and then trying contact paper on top to make it look like marble… not sure yet though :o)
    Tania

  31. Snap says:

I love round tables. Your redo is perfect for the beach scene. Love it!

  32. Janet says:

This is awesome, Mary! I love fresh, beachy vibes in decor.

  33. Arjaye says:

I love the table piece, it looks so lovely and reminds me of the beach and long lazy summer days. Any tips for chalk paint? When i’ve used it is has peeled off, I put quite a few coats on it.

    • Mary says:

Arjaye I would recommend either wax for a piece of furniture that is not heavy traffic or in case of a table I used a varnish to seal in the chalk paint. Chalk paint alone will not stay it must always have a top coat.

  34. Monika says:

Hello Mary, seeing a picture I knew it is your post 🙂 You inspired me for summer deco. See you soon. Hugs. Monika

    • Mary says:

I’m glad that I inspire Monika. I t hink it is the Greek sky and sea that really inspire all of us.

  35. Keri says:

Mary, I absolutely love, love, love the new look you gave this table!!! It’s amazing what a little paint can do. I like the shade of blue you mixed, it’s perfect. The bottles and driftwood look awesome. I can’t wait to see what else you have in store for this table. 🙂

    • Mary says:

Thank you Keri. I came up with the color by accident. I just mixed them together and thought whatever happens happens. It does remind me of the beach so I’m glad it turned out that way.

  36. Krista says:

The table turned out beautiful. Very light, airy and beachy. I was surprised at the transformation.

  37. That is gorgeous!! I love the colors you chose…and the accoutrements, particularly the driftwood. Yes, I’d definitely say you hit your mark, Mary!

    • Mary says:

Aww th ank you Regina! I am really happy with this color, it is so much better than the boring brown.

  38. Florence says:

Mary, I love the table….it’s gorgeous & I know you will enjoy it a long time to come! It has been truly transformed. I would have a hard time waiting a week before putting something on it!

    • Mary says:

Good thinngs take time Florence. I had my husband who was itching to get his things on it. But I had to stand firm.

  39. Millie says:

lovely table redo! the vignette is unique and so totally sets the mood!

    • Mary says:

I agree with you on the vignette. It makes me smile everytime I look at that driftwood.

  40. Mary!! What an amazing transformation! At first I thought the initial blue color was a bit too light, but then quickly learned you are a girl after my own heart 🙂
This table looks like it belongs on a terrace in Santorini. So do tell…is that the future plan you have for it? 😉
    xxx

    • Mary says:

I agree the color was too light at the start, and with the additional layers and the wax it turned into something deeper which I really like. As for what I’m going to do with it… well, that’s a surprise. “wink”

  41. Mary, what a beautiful color! I’m impressed with how neat you painted the underside of the table too. What color chairs are you going to pair with it?

    • Mary says:

Marie if I tell you this story you are going laugh at me. I ordered paint and instead of everlasting I ordered enchanting. I love the paint but the names are making me crazy. So now I see it as a challenge to work with what I have… another adventure begins.

  42. Amazing color! It’s like I am on a beautiful Greek Island! I think I need some vacation asap!

  43. Ivory says:

I simply love what you did here, it’s gorgeous,

    • Mary says:

Thank you Ivory. I won’t be bored when walking into the room with that color.

  44. Marie-Anne says:

What a transformation, Mary! Your table looks as new and the colour you obtained is beautiful!! Chalkpaint does miracles!!! I only thought you needed less coats, two or maximum three, but the end result would not be the same, I guess.
It’s a lovely vignette you created with the painted bottles and the drifwood! Enjoy!
I wish you a happy new week!

    • Mary says:

I really wanted to cover it well because it was laminate and I can’t afford to have it coming off. Eventually I will add some varnish on top to really seal it in, but that is for another post. Thank you for stopping by, did I do Greek colors justice?

  45. You table turned out beautiful, Mary. The colors look definitely Greek and so summery.

  46. Wow Mary it really turned out so nicely. Love the shade of blue and it looks gorgeous with the driftwood and bottles. Stunning makeover.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Michelle. I am really happy with it, I just stare at it I still cannot believe I made that color by mistake.

  47. Claire says:

Love the new look. So much brighter and cheery, definately has that seaside look.

    • Mary says:

Claire the before was awful, and to think I lived with it for years. I had covered it with a pretty fabric but I really wanted to show off the table.

  48. Ellen says:

This is a perfect beach table and the color combination is beautiful. Your aim is right on and the challenge is well met! Loving the driftwood and painted bottles too. Thank-you for this lovely and inspired post.

    • Mary says:

Thank you Ellen for your very nice compliment. I am really in love with this and am also glad I mixed the blue with the grey and not the white as I had originally intended

  49. Katrin says:

Oh Mary, this is so beautiful! I am in love with it! The colour is absolutely my favourite and so happy and so bright! You did great my friend and who wouldn’t think of Greece when looking at it?? The deco goes so well with it all!

    • Mary says:

Thanks Katrin. And to think that I would not have done it if it were not for the challenge. I think with this club we are doing lots of fun things.

  50. The table looks fantastic. As I started reading I couldn’t understand why you didn’t like it, it has beautiful lines. Now you have really showcased what a beauty it is.

    • Mary says:

Debra the top was awful. It looked so fake. Better it should be fake and blue then to be ugly fake wood..

  51. Handan says:

The colors you chose are just gorgeous, Mary! What an after!! WOW!

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Handan. And to think I had no idea what I was doing when I mixed those colors together. I guess I got lucky.

  52. Ashleigh says:

I must say I’m impressed! I usually just pass on a rehab project when I see laminate. You have made a convert out of me!
It would be great if you wanted to come over to my weekly link party and share this post:
    http://www.twentysomethinginthe2010s.com/peace-love-linkup-009/
Hope to see you there! : )

    • Mary says:

Oh I’m so glad to heaer it Ashleigh. This is my firs ttime but I’ll eventually be adding varnish to the top for extra protection because I want this to last. I would love to join your party.

  53. Mary I love your table makeover! It turn out beautiful. Love the colors! I have never tried paint on laminate before, so I’ve pasted up thing before that were laminate. I love your beachy vignette, it goes perfectly with your beautiful table.

    • Mary says:

Linda this was my first time at trying to paint laminate. So far so good. After I finish the table top, I’ll add some varnish just to seal it.

  54. Awesome inspiring ideas I would love for you to share on my #OMHGFF this week. I love that what you have done with the drift wood and the table turned out wonderful! Pinned
Hope you have a wonderful week!
    Karren

    • Mary says:

Thank you so much Karren. It does give the table a beachy feel which is just perfect right now.

  55. Ilka says:

The table turned out beautiful Mary! I’m a big fan of a chalky finish! Love the painted matching accessories! Perfect for the Summer months!

    • Mary says:

I really lucked into that color Ilka. I was originally planning on mixing white and blue but instead, because I ran out of the white, used grey. I think it turned out much better than I expected. Thank you for your sweet comment.

  56. Beverly says:

How pretty, Mary! I adore the colors you chose. What a wonderful makeover.

    • Mary says:

The color was a surprise to me too Beverly. But I love happy accidents so it’s fine by me.

  57. Pili says:

Mary, welcome to the painted furniture fever!! Your table looks amazing!! The blue and white paint creates such a big difference in that corner, it looks brighter!! The blue you made looks perfect for a Greek house, and all the accent decor is the top of the cake!

    • Mary says:

It really is a fever. I want to paint everything now! Nothing shall be left bare! lol I am really happy with the bright results. So much better.

  58. Martie says:

What an awesome transformation! I love the colors you chose. Great job! The driftwood centerpiece is the perfect touch!

    • Mary says:

Martie, I didn’t choose the colors, the colors chose me! I painted the legs and then ran out of white. So I used the grey for a first coat and then mixed it in with the blue. The final color was a happy surprise for me.

  59. Wow! What an amazing transformation! I have an old laminate parson’s table that I have covered with wallpaper in the past, but maybe it is just time for some paint! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your beautiful table at the Celebrate Your Story! link party!

    • Mary says:

This made a huge difference. I was so sick of looking at the fake wood top. The paint makes it so much prettier. I hope you give it a try and let me know how it turns out. Although I do like your idea of wallpaper.

  60. Celeste says:

Of course you know I love this table, Mary, because not only is it beachy, but it’s also wonderfully blue! And the vignette you added to the top is so beautiful! Those vases and driftwood definitely complete the look!

    • Mary says:

And I also know that you like beachy! It really transforms the room and now I don’t have to hide it under a table cloth.

  61. Your table turned out just great Mary! I love the colors you chose and the chalk paint you used seems to have worked wonderfully on the laminate top. I really like how you styled it with the beach in mind, so pretty. Have a wonderful week and take care, Tara

Thanks so much Tara. I really wanted to change it up from that boring brown mess it was before.

  62. The table turned out so fresh and pretty, Mary…who would have ever known it was an old laminate top!

    • Mary says:

I had to stare at it for 15 years, because I did not know of the existance of chalk paint until about 2 years ago. This is what I get for living in the boondocks. I had gone to New York to visit my sons and one of them took me to Micheals, oh blessed day!! Now I had read about chalk paint but didn’t really understand what all the fuss was about till I bought it home.

Mary, This is gorgeous, I’m in love with the color and how well you transformed it. I even love your driftwood and bottles. Simply beautiful! I’m looking forward to see what you have planned for it. HUGS!

  64. TwoPlusCute says:

You are getting better and better!
I did a double take when I saw the result. What a pretty table! Can’t believe the transformation.
And Mary? Oh you made me laugh, about the dust and how you saved the table from “certain boredom”. Lol 😀

    • Mary says:

You know I’m always extolling the virtues of paint. Only another DIYer would get that, right? But it is so true. And yes, it was awfully boring. Who wants to look at fake wood?

Good Morning Mary…first of all, I really enjoy your Int’l Bloggers Club posts as well…they are my monthly field trips to somewhere fun! Second…I am really impressed with how well that table ‘painted up’. Of course, you had to do the Blue/White thing , but even if you weren’t going for the colors of Greece, the table looks great with the blue top and white legs. You can do so much it.
And I love driftwood as well. Your vignette speaks of you and your country for sure, but would look great anywhere. Can’t wait to see the next installment.
    Thanks, Lynn

    • Mary says:

Thank you Lynn. I didn’t know what I was going to do with the top till the last minute. I wanted to paint the table years ago but didn’t have the courage with all those messy oil paints. Now that I have got my hands on chalk paint it was a snap. And the color was the happy accident of running out of white and just mixzing the blue with the grey. I love this color so much more than an ordinary blue.

  66. So charming and refreshing Mary–LOVE IT!

    • Mary says:

Michelle you hit the nail on the head. I think adding white to anything at all is an instant refresher.

  67. Celeste says:

I had a table just like your before table and I gave it to my Mom. I love what you did with yours.

    • Mary says:

I have had this boring brown thing for too many years. It looked awful in the room, like a black hole. Now it’s become a ray of sunshine. Maybe Celeste you can give it a makeover and surprise your mom.
