Easy DIY Fall Eucalyptus Vignette

The other day I showed  you my drunken table and a fall vignette. But you…

The other day I showed  you my drunken table and a fall vignette. But you didn’t really see the vignette that was on the table … the one with the pumpkins below.

Well today I am going to show you that vignette and what I eventually did with it.

And it may be an Easy DIY Fall Eucalyptus Vignette, but I still had to scramble for it.

But first, I want to  tell you where I got my inspiration from.  I visit Shabbyfufu a lot and I spotted this beauty one day and melted. Of course, I can only aspire to master Janet’s work and her gorgeous photography.

As soon as I saw that photo I knew I just had to find some eucalyptus. I  scrambled on the vespa with poor hubby in the lead and we went looking for trees.  We found lots near the beach and also took a nice walk.  Something which this blogger’s sedate body needed.

My leaves are not as pretty; they have a worn out look to them.  And I could not for the life of me find those pretty round leaves anywhere.

This is what I finally ended up with and what is parked on my living room coffee table at the moment.  It looks nothing like Janet’s masterpiece but I can always aspire.

But lets go back to the beginning.  I started out with a wooden crate, an idea which I got from my friend Katrin of KreativK, who uses these extensively in her decorating with beautiful results.  I got the crate free at the local farmers market. I painted the outside white because it had lettering on it which would have been too busy for the neutral look I was after.  We don’t want the crate competing with what’s inside.

I then added a basket, the crate was a good size but I wanted a cozy, layered look.

Next, two good sized  pumpkins. I used a variety of shapes for interest.

Sprinkle in some pinecones.  They always make me happy and look so cute. I’ve had these for years and some of them have been painted on the outside.

I then added my poor excuse for eucalyptus leaves. Some are green, while others were chosen for their dried out look to represent the transition to fall.

And finally I added some branches of the purple heart wandering jew plants that I have all over the balcony.

Honestly, I can take pictures of  pinecones forever.  I just love the look of them. And by adding a little paint here and there you get so much more interest.

At one point, I considered making the vignette in my wire dish rack but eventually nixed the idea.

Vignettes are such a fun and easy way to decorate your home and they can cost practically nothing, if you look to nature and around the house. You might even get some exercise which I desperately needed when I went on that hunt for the eucalyptus branches. Go over to Shabbyfufu!  You will thank me as I thank Janet for the inspiration.

If you wish to recreate this vignette, see the recommendations below. Now tell me, do you like my easy DIY Fall Eucalyptus Vignette in the crate or did  you prefer the other version in the wire dish rack?  And do you also make your DIYs a couples activity with your spouse?

  1. I think you did a great job Mary and I would love to have this as part of my fall decoration! Also I find your photos are really good!

    1. Thank you Ntina. I too really like doing easy projects for the fall. And when I am done with it I can make a pumpkin pie.

  2. I vote for the basket, the layers work for me. Your vignette has a beautiful rustic natural charm, which definitely appeals to me Mary. Good on you and hubby for scrambling to find those leaves. The cool tones match beautifully with the wandering jew and balance out the warm browns of the pine codes and basket.

    1. You said it perfectly Michelle. I too love the idea of the basket and the layering. I think that’s what makes it special. Not the actual objects but the way they are put together.

    1. We have a great time doing projects together and my husband gets a kick out of helping me. I think it is that way with you Ann Marie, and your husband too. But you are also lucky to have your son helping out. Maybe I can recruit mine too at some point .

    1. Ivory I am always happy when I can inspire others. That’s what the blog is for. I cannot wait to see what you come up with for Thanksgiving.

  3. I don’t think you have to ‘aspire’ for anything Mary! You’re already there!! Love your photos and ideas :). Purple really makes this vignette pop and creates a bit of the unexpected.

  4. Good Afternoon Mary, I love how you have created your vignette with things you love. The pinecones look gorgeous. What a fun way to collect your eucalyptus, by hopping on your vespa…. its also a brilliant way to get through traffic quickly.
I think it was inspired to use your wire tray, but I love the basket as everything layers so beautifully.
…. and the fading eucalyptus… well it is Autumn and you are being true to the season.
    Have a lovely afternoon.
    Best Wishes

    1. Vespas or any small bikes are time savers. Of course we don’t live in the city but sometimes the center of town feels like times square. haha. I’m m curious to see what those leaves will look like after a few weeks.

  5. Pure genius. You never cease to amaze me. Out of stuff we have around us you create art. You are such a natural genius.

    1. Thanks Marie, it was a last minute addition, since the balcony is full of those plants. Can’t kill them even if I tried.

  6. Your Fall Vignette is beautiful Mary! I love the smell of eucalyptus, and it looks really pretty along with the purple jew around the pumpkin . I like them best in the crate, and your photos are beautiful as always!

    1. I think it turned out pretty well. The mixture of colors and texures makes it quite interesting. Yes, I like the crate too, and thanks to Katrin, I was able to remember her idea.

  7. Mary, this vignette is sooooo pretty!! I like the layered look of the basket in the crate! The pumpkin, pinecone and the greenery with that spot of purple is just the perfect combination!! I’m so glad you were able to get out for a while with your husband, sounds like fun!

    1. We did have a lot of fun. I think I drive him crazy a bit but I think he secretly enjoys it. All these adventures and hunting around looking for the right materials and tools.

  8. Mary, I love the combination of the purple heart plant with the pale orange of the gourds…what an incredible combo! Combined with the pale green of the eucalyptus…you nailed that vignette my friend.
Hope your weekend is off to great start.
    hugs, Lynn

    1. Thanks Lynn. Sometimes it all comes together to create a near perfect vignette and then all is well in blogland! 😉

  9. Absolutely lovely, Mary, and I love the addition of purple! As far as I know, fresh eucalyptus isn’t even an option where I live, so I think it’s fabulous that you can just go out and collect it!
I prefer the cozy baskets over the wire, and since hubby isn’t so much into diy, I usually go it alone. (But he is fond of those impromptu trips out of the house together!) 🙂
Great post, Mary! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Karen I go running around picking flowers off of trees in the street. The hibiscus grown in trees that are on the sidewalks. I just reach out and grab some. If they should stop me I can always say I’m a blogger.
But the hubby is also very good about those trips and puts up with my shenanigans.

  10. I literally gasped when I saw one of the photos. It is stunning Mary, natural, simple and beautiful. Your blog amazes me every week. Shared.

  11. Mary, your vignette with the purple is stunning. Really beautiful contrast between the purple leaves and the squash. I’m pinning this and sharing with others.

  12. Mary, your fall eucalyptus vignette is so beautiful! The purple tones are really pretty and I love the contrast to the pumpkins and brown pine cones! Very rustic and cozy and ahh just lovely! Now I want to make my fall vignette this weekend!

    1. Thank you for giving me the idea for the crates. It makes a huge difference and just pulls the whole thing together.

  13. I love the fall vignette, especially the eucalyptus. I like the idea you just went and picked what you needed fresh and dried to give your vignette texture and interest. Pinned to my vignette board.

    1. Debra that is the best way to do it. I just walk around and pick off the streets in the town. We have some lovely trees that grow habiscus flowers and I just pick as I’m walking along.

  14. Mary, this is a very attractive display. Where did you find those unusually shaped pumpkins, or are they squash? Anyway, love everything about your display. I like it better in the wooden tray than the wire basket too. The wandering Jew looks nice in it giving some subtle color, and the pinecones give you some nice texture. All in all….great!

    1. I think they are squash Florence, they are called gourds. But the color is right so that’s why I bought them. I picked up the pumpkin from the farmer’s market. Can’t wait to make some pie.

  15. As I am famous for copy-catting (lol), I KNOW how hard it can be, sometimes….but, oh, so fun…I think you did a good job. Here from Sprinkles

  16. Mary – I really liked them both! Great job. I do not DIY by myself OR with my husband. But I enjoy reading DIY blogs like yours immensely! 🙂 Thanks for sharing on #overthemoon

    1. Thank you Cathy for your sweet comment. You never know I might just inspire you to try one of these. After all it is just a matter of combining things together.

  17. I am such a fan of metals, so I thought I would love the vignette in the metal basket more. But the woven basket is so homey and comfy, which mean fall to me. I love the shapes and textures that you used. The gourds are interesting, the eucalyptus smells so good (I can smell it from here!)and the shape of the leaves is interesting.
The pine-cones are a perfect addition, the browns and the layers look great next to the roundness of the gourds and pumpkin. Then when you added the wandering jew the purple color made everything pop! I love it!
    What a gorgeous fall display!

    1. Nikki, I see that I have won you over. The wood and basket are so cozy that’s why I chose them finally. I was really happy with how this one came together, in a matter of minutes really. Sometimes the fast ones are the best.

  18. It’s a good approximation, you want to be inspired by rather than copy directly someone else anyway.
We only seem to get eucalyptus round here in florist bouquets, it’s popular then because it lasts so long. When I am given flowers I always divide them up to make more arrangements and love it when there are a few branches in there.

    1. Very good idea Julie. I usually pick flowers from the road but it never coincides with my eucalyptus picking.

  19. Fall is the perfect time to bring the outdoors inside. Your vignette looks lovely, Mary. Thanks for sharing at Snickerdoodle. Pinning to my autumn board.

  20. Beautiful. Love the pop of purple! I have the same plants on my porch. I’m bringing back my Monday link party @ DIY Home Sweet Home (first one will be Oct. 16th) and I would love for you to stop by and link up your fall vignette or any new projects your working on! http://diyhshp.blogspot.com

  21. Mary, this is lovely. I’m using a lot of eucalyptus myself. It’s great in arrangements and also for vignettes such as yours. Happy Autumn!

  22. Hi Mary,
I have the purple heart plant, too. It’s flowers and leaves are so pretty! You make me want to use it in an arrangement, too!
